"Doctor Poison is an expert in the use of poisons, toxins and plagues."

"In 1942 Princess Maru became Doctor Poison, who disguising her gender via a bulky hooded costume and mask, was the leader of a Nazi spy ring whose ultimate goal was to wreak havoc in the US Army by contaminating the army's water with "reverso", a drug that "confuses the brain centers… [making] soldiers do the exact opposite of what they are told". This effects tens of thousands of soldiers. She kidnapped Steve Trevor and Diana Prince in an attempt to learn spy secrets."

"In The New 52, Doctor Maru is the daughter of a Russian pair of scientists renowned for their knowledge of poisons. American spies had approached her parents as they thought the doctors' expertise could lead to the United States' domination in biological weaponry. When they refused, the Russian government discovered their practices. Her parents were branded terrorists by Russia, and imprisoned near Siberia where they died during interrogations. Doctor Poison blamed the United States for her parents' deaths and planned to take revenge through chemical attacks."

I would not have anticipated such an obscure villain (yet, a staple in WWs rogue gallery) to intrigue me the most about this film.

She looks so...pained. In every shot. I want to know more about her!

You would look pained as well if you've melted a part of your face. :p

Seriously, though, she does seem more like a tragic character than a straight-up villain.

Yeah, it does look like she's a tragic character. Maybe forced to work with/for Ares or whoever Danny Huston is playing and betrayed by him at the end.

Real question of course is - if she pulls that mask off, will she die?

I love her look. Might she have the most iconic appearance of any cinematic superhero villain since Heath Ledger's Joker?

I loved the extra reveals of Doctor Poison in the second trailer. I think the character fits the WW1 setting very well.

And it's nice for Diana's naivety and ... optimistic world view to be challenged in more than one way, especially by a fellow female. I don't expect them to have a major physical confrontation, but I hope that they at least have an awesome philosophical confrontation in which Doctor Poison explains her motivation for wanting to unleash pain, suffering and death upon the world (while Diana wants to save the world).

A very inspired choice for the villain, I'd say. And Anaya looks amazing as the character so I definitely can't wait to see her full performance.

Still love that shot of her in the first trailer, very sinister.

Anyway her part may not be as big as we think according to the actress herself:

“Well, it was a small role in this big ensemble, but it is an important character in the story. It’s directed by Patty Jenkins, then there’s Gal Gadot as our main lead, Chris Pine as her co-lead and I’m going to be… a big nightmare for the two of them”.

She most likely is working for Danny Huston's character in some capacity. But she's been a standout in the trailers so far I hope they give her she time to shine.

Possibly so.

There's always something about the simplest materials and the utility thereof that can creep you out more than a scary helmet or full prosthetic salad.

Dr. Poison literally looks like somebody I would not want to meet.

As Artorias said, her role is probably quite limited, but Anaya is a great actress, I always found her enjoyable in each of her roles I've seen, and I have no doubt that will be the case in this film as well.

Very true.

If you guys are unfamiliar with the actress, I HIGHLY recommend a film called Room in Rome. I believe it's still on Netflix.

You'll thank me.

I'd rather recommend "The Skin I Live In".

Though I believe I first noticed her in "Alatriste" with Viggo Mortensen, which is a gorgeous looking film... cinematography is reminiscent of Caravaggio's paintings.

This character makes sense in the context of WWI because back then chemical weapons were really the new thing. So kudos to the writers for making that connection.

And I also like the mask. She actually looks like Mason Verger from season 2 of Hannibal so I'm expecting her face to be mangled under the thing.

Kudos to the creative team for actually using Wonder Woman villains!! Dr Poison has always been a very creepy villain with loads of potential! Her inclusion makes alot of sense in the context of WW1!!

I remember 10 years ago when creative teams/script writers would come out and say they were creating their own villains because Diana lacked a formidable foe or her rogues gallery lacked depth. Love the change of heart!! We're getting two Wondy villains in Diana's first movie!!

I agree about it reflecting Diana's naïveté. Poison is usually reserved for being sneaky and to fight it there needs to be some intelligence. People don't usually think associate Diana with intelligence, mainly just her strength. This choice of villain could be good for the film. Her strength helps her deal with the background noise but her intelligence is what allows her to succeed in fighting Doctor Poison and her puppet master. It really is a smart choice.

Maybe to some level, she agrees with how Dr Poison feels about and views the world. That would be totally Diana, to empathize with her villains.

Factors in to her decision to abandon Man's World.

To this day, I don't get where they were coming from with this. Wondy has at least three high caliber villains - Ares, Cheetah and Circe. I'd argue that Superman doesn't have much more than that - Lex Luthor, Zod and Brainiac. Perhaps one could throw in Metallo in there as well. Doomsday and Bizarro are punchbags.

Aside from Batman, none of these heroes have a big list of interesting and well-written villains in their respective rogues galleries.

I think there might be a real possibility for Diana to show compassion toward Doctor Poison and maybe even gain her as an ally. When written best, this is what the character tends to do.

I think it all, sadly, boils down to the ever changing roster of Wonder Woman writers not respecting her villains enough to continue using and developing them as memorable antagonists for Diana.

With Rucka back on writing duties, that is changing so the future should be brighter when it comes to showcasing Wonder Woman's gallery of rogues. Hopefully, with Dr Psycho, Silver Swan and some of the other villains with great potential getting a revamp too.

I do hope her villains get better treatment in the future, but the First Born was a pretty cool antagonist in my opinion anyway.

I really like what I see of Doctor Poison in the trailers, I think she's gonna be a great villain. I wonder if we might see any descendants of hers in the present day, since legacies are so popular among comic book characters.

Doctor Poison! i wouldnt have thunk that they would use a classic villain. as if i couldnt love the production any more than i already do they come up with this. so perfect :up:

True. My first exposure to Anaya was as a bride of Dracula in Van Helsing & I always thought she gave the best performance of the three.

When it's all said and done, though, I hope they don't kill off her character and leave some wiggle room for her to be used later on.

Same here, I first saw her in "Van Helsing" and I loved her. I have a feeling that she will die at the end, though. But she's going to be one of those villains that you feel for and won't be happy to see her go. Also, she reminds me of Faora in this shot :D :
