Emily Blunt boards The Girl on the Train

I'm not surprised that the early reviews are mixed. And yes I know we have to wait for far more reviews to get an overall picture of its critical reception.

Me neither but I can see from the reviews I've read it will be enjoyable popcorn fun at least.

Whoever thought a movie made by Tate Taylor had a shot at being an Oscar contender though. Well I don't know what you were smoking.

Well The Help did get quite a few Oscar nominations including one for best picture and Octavia Spencer won best supporting actress. But nobody cared about that film because of Taylor's direction and it's the kind of feel good tripe that the Oscars sometimes nominate.

The problem is The Girl on the Train isn't The Help. It's completely different kettle of fish and material like it needs a master filmmaker to truly excel as a film. And as seen by the incredibly well made Gone Girl, the academy doesn't like to nominate these types of films if they can help it. Did anyone think that Tate Taylor would make a better version of Gone Girl than David Fincher and somehow turn it into a better reviewed Oscar darling?

Can't say I disagree with anything you've just said Spidey.

From the initial reviews seems like Taylor was attempting a Gone Girl type of movie with a book not as good as GG never mind attempting to outdo David Fincher.

Yep, I'm definitely thinking that maybe the novel wasn't as strong as Gone Girl's novel.

The reviews so far are right about where I expected. A Gone Girl-esque tale as directed by the guy who did The Help. A mixed bag was practically ensured. I'll be seeing it for the cast.

Reviews are brutal. Some even panned Blunt and called her a miscast.

Try as the actress might, all of Blunt's grimaces, slurred words and unbalanced walking don't really convince that she is Rachel; it feels like an act.

At the centre of this is Emily Blunt, who despite the recognisable cast around her, is rarely off screen. She’s a fine actress, but obviously miscast here.

Kyle Buchanan ✔ @kylebuchanan It hurts me to say anything bad about Emily Blunt but she appears to have modeled her GIRL ON THE TRAIN performance on David After Dentist

Kyle Buchanan ✔ @kylebuchanan
@MichaelNotCera @jpraup To call this "towering" and "the best of her career" is a hate crime against Emily Blunt

:o

Kyle Buchanan ✔ @kylebuchanan Rebecca Ferguson delivers another breakout performance as Chloe Moretz in THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

Yep, knew there was a reason I didn't jump on the hype train for this one like a lot did. It never grabbed me and just, as has been said repeatedly, seemed like a clear Gone Girl rip off.

I wouldn't call it a total bomb. But it's certainly mixed reviews.

Not my girl Blunt :(

Looks like this is going to be a netflix rental.

I still want to see it because of the cast but these reviews are making it hard. :(

I will wait for this on DVD. Not worth it to see it in the theater.

Haley Bennett reminds me a lot of Jennifer Lawrence for some reason.

She's like a tiny version of Cate Blanchett to me. Funnily enough, JLaw's looks like a young Cate Blanchett too in her recent Dior ads. :funny:

after this and her awful turn in huntsman not a good year for her lol

I like Blunt but I find her lacks the charisma and screen presence to be a leading movie star like Jennifer Lawrence or Scarlett Johansson. Blunt is better off as a supporting actress or ensemble movies.

She's having a bad year. This is not good for her career.

damn Damn DAAAAAAAAAAYUM :(

I think she definetly has the chops and charisma to be a leading lady. Her role selection for major movies isnt that good though. Although on paper Girl on the Train shouldve worked

Girl on the Train was cheap to make (it cost 40mil), it will make money for the studio. It might over perform overseas for all we know. Still the mixed reviews taint the whole venture.

Blunt has a good career and she has the Mary Poppins sequel coming up so she'll be fine. Honestly I was never convinced, as talented as she is, that Blunt was guaranteed to get on the top tier A-list like a lot of fans. It's not about whether she deserves it or not but whether it's going to happen. With a few expections the movies she is being offered and or decide to take don't work out most of the time. Hollywood is a topsy turvy place so who knows where she'll be in 5 years.

I do think that The Girl on the Train did mostly look good on paper (the director was always iffy), I agree.

She has Mary Poppins and Edge of Tomorrow 2 down the line. She'll be fine but I know she's kinda desperate to get that awards claim still.

No idea why she signed up for The Hunstman. I know why Chastain did. They told her when she did Crimson Peak that she had to do another Universal movie along with CP.
