Emily Blunt boards The Girl on the Train

She has Mary Poppins and Edge of Tomorrow 2 down the line. She'll be fine but I know she's kinda desperate to get that awards claim still.

No idea why she signed up for The Hunstman. I know why Chastain did. They told her when she did Crimson Peak that she had to do another Universal movie along with CP.

I'll believe that's happening when i see the trailer

It will be a while yet. The studio just got the writers in a few months back and with Crusie's busy schedule who knows we might have to wait a couple of years before they even shoot.

I dont think Cruise's schedule is what's going to keep the movie from getting made quickly/at all

That film was not a hit. I know WB is looking into making a sequel but that doesn't mean that they will at the end of the day. I'll never say never though.

I wouldn't count on Mary Poppins' reception since it's being directed by Rob Marshall. It might make some money but from the response from Saving Mrs. Banks, I don't think the audience cares for this character. Edge of Tomorrow 2 is not confirmed. The first movie lost money due to high budget. The audience won't be there for the sequel. I highly doubt the sequel would make money.

Chastain signing up because of Universal contract is BS. That's a rumor from her fans making excuse for her. It has never been confirmed by trade. Why would Universal lock down her? She's never been a commercial actress. I can see them do that with a younger actress like Blunt but no way it's someone like Chastain.

I think Chastain desperately wanted the role because at her age is hard to find high budget commercial roles. She's not a beauty like Charlize Theron or Scarlet Johannson. It's hard for her to get cast in commercial films. She has been desperate for mainstream movie roles in recent years. She knows her time clock is ticking. I really think she wanted a role in The Huntsman.

Girl on the Train was cheap to make (it cost 40mil), it will make money for the studio. It might over perform overseas for all we know. Still the mixed reviews taint the whole venture.

Universal spent a lot of money on the movie's US marketing. So, if we use the usual 2.5 x budget, the total domestic cost is 100 million. I think the movie can reach to 100 million domestically. For overseas, US studios usually only get less than 40% of the profit. If the movie makes 100 million overseas, Universal will only get around 40 million back. In the end, the movie may only make a small profit.

As expected, it will be Universal and DreamWorks's The Girl on the Train at the top of the weekend box office as the film brought in an estimated $9.35 million on Friday and is heading toward a $26+ million opening. Reviews for the film, unfortunately, settled in around a 43% rating on RottenTomatoes and the CinemaScore from opening day audiences was only a "B-", which doesn't bode all that well for its future prospects.

Serious question, does it EVER work out whenever a movie is compared to another superior movie? I feel like every single time a movie is about to come out and the marketing compares to being the next...whatever, the movie always ends up failing or being a disappointment. Whenever I see "This is the next..." I go "uh oh, this movie's f***ed." has there ever been a movie that actually lived up to its comparison?

What an awful film. I can't believe this got made. Was the book this bad or is this just a great example of a poorly written screenplay? Like it had a plot but there were no stakes or highs or lows. It plodded along and took what Gone Girl did beautifully (narration and flashbacks) and used them to fill up some slow points. They added nothing to the present or to portray sense of change between the two moments like a flashback is usually used for.

Okay back from seeing and yeah this is bad. I will say Emily Blunt is really good but no one will remember because everyone else felt like they couldn't bother to be on the same wavelength as Emily.

The book, its' been a while since I read it but I'm pretty sure they changed a few things for the movie and not sure if that was good thing now. The book has always been said it's a poor man's Gone Girl and it feels like it. Also that movie had David Fincher, this one has Tate Taylor. A gigantic difference.

For Emily I'd give this maybe 7/10 but taking everything else into account this is like a 5/10.

I for one loved this movie. Saw it the other day and while it seemed a little long, it was totally enjoyable.

Yeah it was a bit too long and it wasn't that good that you could forgive it. That last act felt like it should've been cut down by 15 minutes or so.

Well, I didn't hate it. I mean, yes, it was too long, Tate Taylor's direction was VERY blah and I figured out who did it pretty early on, but it held my interest and I personally thought Blunt was fantastic. Overall, I'd rate it a rental.

If lifetime could afford A list type actors it would be this goddamn movie.

Yeah I just saw this today with friends and we all liked it in varying degrees. I had the disadvantage of knowing the twists but my friends didn't so they enjoyed it a bit more. The cast, most especially Emily, really elevated this movie. I just love that woman. And is Kudrow wasted or what?!

And totally random but... holy close ups! It totally made me jealous of how great their skin is. :funny:

Got to finally see this. Call me crazy, guys, but I really enjoyed this. In fact, I kinda wanna watch it again. 2016 sure was an interesting year in film, boy, because once again this is yet another film that I fail to see why it was so lambasted. This was no master class thriller like Gone Girl, but this was a very solid mystery thriller nonetheless. Now, I had previously listened to the audiobook version of the book so I already had the story in the back of my mind while watching this, so perhaps that enhanced my viewing experience. I think the big issue people had was the non linear storytelling but it didn't bother me at all and I followed everything just fine and was engaged throughout the film. It never felt slow to me. I really liked Blunt, I liked all the actors, I liked the cinematography, and felt the movie was well paced. But, hey to each his own. I feel this film's biggest sin was perhaps comparing itself to Gone Girl in the marketing. Whenever a movie compares itself to a superior movie you're always, always setting yourself up for failure.

Solid 8/10 for me.

She got a BAFTA nomination for lead actress today. Maybe the SAG nom wasn't a complete fluke?

Don't get me wrong, she was amazing, but the film itself didn't exactly rally behind her.

I'm fairly confident in saying had the movie not bombed she had a very good shout of getting her first Oscar nom. I mean she got a SAG and BAFTA noms without it and she barely campaigned for the movie.

I wish they had handled the movie better because I loved the book.

Kyle Buchanan ? @kylebuchanan Rebecca Ferguson delivers another breakout performance as Chloe Moretz in THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

Yeah, she looks a lot like Moretz. Moreso than Ingrid Bergman, whom she’s always compared to. At least Moretz can act.
