EXCL: Len Wiseman on Wolverine

Len Wiseman has already made a name for himself with the success of the "Underworld" movies and next Wednesday, his take on the "Die Hard" franchise, Live Free or Die Hard will open globally. Since he's already in good with 20th Century Fox, we wondered whether he'd be interested in helming the Wolverine prequel for which he'd been rumored as one of the contenders to direct.

"'Wolverine' is something I was interested in way before I was talking to these guys about 'Die Hard,'" he told Superhero Hype!. "I think it would be a great story to tell, and in the case of that film, it wouldn't be [as big] in terms of large-scale action, but it's something I'm interested in, in his origin story and the character story with that, and I know how Hugh would play it, and that would be awesome. So that would be my passion for that is that I think the character story is really cool, and I'd love to see it and be there the first day [it opens] anyway. There's so many things that have been going on and I know that there are so many other directors. There's nothing set in any fashion, but it has been talked about."

Check ComingSoon.net next week for our full interview with Wiseman talking about Live Free or Die Hard before it opens on June 27.

Mm, I wonder how this'll all play out...

I still think he'd make a good choice.

I think he already has the job personally. I just think they're waiting to make the announcement.

I personally didn't like either Evolution, but I still think he can do a good job with Wolverine.

I'm really not excited about this. The Underworld films are all style and no substance. They look pretty, but there's some odd editing choices made and the scripts are so full of plot holes and bad dialogue it's painful. He also manages to evoke some of the most wooden performances out of his actors. I'd prefer he not touch a superhero property.

I'd rather not see his damn wife in the movie either.

Maybe they're waiting to see how 'Live Free or Die Hard' is accepted (from critics, fans, and the box office receipts) before making a choice on Wiseman for Wolverine? Out of him and DJ Caruso, I'd pick Wiseman, only because I'm familiar with his work (liked Underworld 1, sorta liked the sequel). I think he has a good visual style. Needs a little work on getting great performances out of his actors, but that might be fulfilled with his next film. I'd love for him to bring his wife into the picture, too :p

From what he says, there seems to be a lot of other director's being considered. I'd love to see Zack Snyder take on this project, but that's definitely not happening at this point :(

Yeah, well, he has a hard time not putting her in his movies. They're the new Renny Harlin and Gina Davis.

Yep, and Wiseman could very well put her in this one. There's definitely a potential role for Beckinsale in Wolverine's love interest, and Beckinsale and Jackman have worked together before in Van Helsing.

Here's the current tracking on Die Hard - plus other movies opening in the next few weeks:

Fox's Live Free Or Die Hard (June 27th) continues to track "good but not great." I find this a surprise considering the incredibly well-done ad campaign with special effects that seem to defy gravity. But it's been eons since the last sequel. Expect an opening in the $30+ millions.

The ad campaign for Live Free or Die Hard is crazy. I think I've seen an ad or billboard on every cab and street corner in Manhattan over the last two weeks, and just as many commercials. Hell, I even saw Bruce Willis. He was filming a promo at my office last month.

But I agree, I think they're waiting to see how Die Hard does before making him any kind of offer. He's a good director, I'd be happy if he got the job.

I don't like this.

I don't want the Underworld style of filmmaking brought to the X-Men franchise, even if it is a spinoff that I don't think should be made in the first place.

How can we assume we'd get an Underworld style of filming?

After having Brett's style of filmmaking I don't consider anything to be much of a stretch.

All I need to know to hate this man is that he made a PG-13 Die Hard.

Underworld films are crap. The trailer for Die Hard also looks like crap. Director is a hack. This would be bad.

Yes it would cos it has strong language and is pretty violent.

The original as it stands would be an R-rated movie for the language, at the very least. Even more so with the 'shoot the glass' scene. :wow: But this was also back in the 80s, when all of the big action movies were R-rated and had tons of violence and bloodshed.

Today you see more of these movies being trimmed down to the furthest extent of a PG-13 rating to get a bigger audience so yes, I think if the first movie were to be made today, I think it would have made to fit a PG-13.

And I don't think Wiseman "made" a PG-13 Die Hard sequel, I think the studio made a PG-13 movie.

But let's not turn this into a Live Free or Die Hard hate thread, shall we? :cwink:

a hack?... he made a big bugdet action movie for 20mil and it grossed 90mil..
the sequel cost only 50mil and made 60mil

he works with a small budget and he easily makes it back and many people LOVE both the movies.....

when u could do better then go ahead:hyper:

Ugh. Don't encourage him. :o
