I finally saw Platoon fully for the first time recently and I thought it was good but in my view it doesn't stack up to one of all my all-time favs Full Metal Jacket.

So this got me thinking what are your favorite Vietnam war films?

Apocalypse Now. A fever dream that shows the dark nature of man.

I might have to give it to Platoon. I shockingly still haven't seen Apocalypse Now. Full Metal Jacket is great, but the movie peaks before we even get to Vietnam at the military base.

But honestly, whenever someone mentions Vietnam movies, the first one I think of is Forrest Gump, even though less than a quarter of the movie takes place there.

Yeah even though it's brief in Forrest Gump it's still great.

Yeah, I saw Platoon for the first time when it was on TV a week or two ago. I thought it was pretty great. Full Metal Jacket is too... I don't know which one I'd give it to, out of those.

I've tried Apocalypse Now a couple of times and never made it past that briefing they give to Sheen, with Harrison Ford in the room. It just never gets my interest. I'd like to try it again... It's on TV this week, but from like 11pm-5am or something. :funny: No thank you.

Apocalypse Now
The Deer Hunter
Full Metal Jacket

In that order.

Apocalypse Now is probably the best film but Platoon might be the closest to how the Vietnam war actually went. The first half of Full Metal Jacket is masterful, second half not as much.

You see I've heard that a lot but I wonder if people aren't appreciating the moments we did see in the 2nd half namely because the 1st half was arguably more unique in the war film genre?

The 2nd half had some simply great moments, that's where you got to meet the actual field troops like Animal Mother and the rest, I mean the sniper scene was incredibly vivid and impactful, I'd say more so than even Sgt. Pyle and his finale, that end march, Paint It freaking Black etc.

I think even without the first half, the 2nd part of FMJ alone would still make it one of my favorite war films.

It depends what type of Vietnam we are talking about.

I personally think First Blood is a really underrated Vietnam film as people write it off due to the action, Sly and the fact the sequels had huge body counts.

First Blood doesn't literally take place in Vietnam though. It deals with a Vietnam Vet who comes home to the U.S. only to be treated awful & have a break down from PTSD from being in Vietnam & goes on a rampage against his own country. They could have incorporated some visual parallels of what Rambo went through in Vietnam to how the cops were treating & abusing him though.

I think we all know what the best one is.

Full Metal Jacket was also amazing but I liked the most Platoon. That's why I am voting up the Platoons...

I liked We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson. It also has Barry Pepper and Clark Gregg.

Just because his legendary stache was missing doesn't mean Sam Elliot should be overlooked.

Apocalypse Now followed by Platoon for me.

Apocalypse Now. There is no equal.

Platoon is excellent for what it is but AN is my cup of tea.

the one where that creedence clearwater revival song plays

Lol....

Platoon has my top choice followed by Apocalypse Now. Then just throw in Born on the 4th of July, We Were Soldiers, Casualties of War, Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, Rescue Dawn, Good Morning Vietnam, the Green Berets, among many others on my list of favorites.

Platoon without a doubt.

Full Metal Jacket was decent. The second half of the film is much better. Apacolypse Now went right over my head. I have no idea what the point of that movie was. Everything after Robert Duvall was boring.

But yeah, Platoon. I used to like The Boys in Company C quite a bit too.

All you Apocalypse Now none believers hang your head in shame.
