Who are your favourite writers at marvel (now or in the past)?

From back in the day, I'd have to say Chris Claremont, since that's when I first became interested in X Men, and he had a fantastic feel of the characters.

My current favourites are Robert Kirkman, Mark Miller and Peter David...

I think Robert Kirkman did an amazing job with his marvel zombie duties, and I loved MTU to it's unfortunate death. I think he's one of the best writers around today. Ditto Peter David. Everything I read from the guy is gold. And I love Mark Miller's epic, quality storylines. I also dig JMS for squadron supreme/supreme power and ultimate power.

Favorite Marvel writers:

Current: Slott, Kirkman (aside for Ultimate X-Men), Parker, Fraction, Reed, Brubaker (on IRON FIST), McDuffie, Whedon.

Recent Past: Vaughan, McKeever, Heinberg

Dispant Past: Hard to say; so many of the greats from decades ago are just churning out absolute crap now in comparison. Jenkins and PAD have aged the best and even they have their major stumbles. I mean, sure, Claremont wrote some good stories, 20+ years ago, and there has to be some point where you stop kissing someone's arse for what they did a generation ago and call them on the baloney they are doing now. Too many sagging former or recent stars pull the Al Bundy Card, simply shrugging off any criticism with some variation of, "I once scored four touchdowns in one game for Polk High."

It seems like the lowlymarvel guy just made a thread like this, but I'll bite.
The following guys, I would follow into bowels of comic book Hell.

Robert Kirkman
- Invincible is the best superhero book being produced and Ant-Man is among my favorite Marvel titles. Also, Walking Dead is my drug of choice.

Brian Wood - DMZ might be my favorite ongoing book. LOCAL is also up there. I've said it before, but the guy seems to write stories just for me.

Mike Mignola - Like Kirkman, Mignola's created an entire world, complete with a rich history in the pages of Hellboy and BPRD. I could read Hellboy comics all day everyday.

Joss Whedon - No one writes a better X-Men book, in my opinion (not that the competition is very fierce).

Warren Ellis - If Ellis' only book was Fell, I'd still put him on the list. Best damn book Image puts out.

Ed Brubaker - No brainer. Best run on Captain America ever. Best run on Daredevil ever. Co-writer of Marvel's best new series, Iron Fist. And he's not through with any of them.

I would've added Dan Slott to the list, but I'm going to hold off on him until he can completely obliterate all conceptions I have about what it is to be a Spider-Man writer. :cwink:

Also, I'm keeping my eye on Matt Fraction. He'll be huge and very soon.

Last but not least, Keith Giffen and Mike Oeming are two guys who've never written anything I didn't like. It might not be groundbreaking, but it sure is entertaining, and well worth my money.

I only noted writers on Marvel like he asked. Still, I like my list.

Forgot Giffen, though, now he's an old-timer who still is on the ball.

I like Abnett & Lanning on NOVA but haven't seen them on anything else.

Yeah I meant marvel, but might as well make it all writers....

Mike Mignola is fantastic....I really want to read invincible, but money is so damn tight :( It is on my list of ''to read'' though....

Claremont was definitly a legend back in the day, and although he's not one of my current favourites, I can read his work at least (I enjoyed x men the end).

Rules schmules. Besides, if you want quality you have to go outside of Marvel a lot of the time.

Also, Abnett & Lanning have the space heroes down pat. You never read their Legion of Superheroes run?

Well, Invincible doesn't sell in the Top 100. Doesn't that make it crap, according to you? :oldrazz:

Mignola's work isn't exactly blazing it up the charts, either.

I'll give you one last chance to take back that comment, and all will be forgiven.

Chris Claremont will always be at the top of my list.
PAD, I like and trust his writing.
JMS is clever.
There are probably more, but I can't think of any.

Back in the day...

Roger Stern
- I prefer his Avengers run to Busiek's,matched with Buscema and Palmer's art, these back issues are still a treat,Under Siege,Assault on Olympus,Once and Future Kang,etc...epic and emotional stories which never forgot to have fun

Scott Lobdell - Loved his Uncanny run from the 90s around the #300s.Understood the family aspect of the X-Men like nobody else, wrote brilliant done in ones (Uncanny #297) and huge story arcs.Fatal Attractions is still one of the best X-stories IMO.

Currently...

Ed Brubaker(King Midas of comics) - Iron Fist,DD and Cap are Marvel's best solo titles right now, understands what makes his main characters click and how to utilize a supporting cast

Warren Ellis - Authority and Planetary are 2 of the most wondrous and mind blowing books I will read in my lifetime.Nuff said.I want Doctor Sleepless and Black Summer now,oh yea and the final issue of Planetary wouldn't hurt.

Mark Millar
- Big,epic, widescreen, badass, balls out insanity like nobody else,Civil War took a turn for the worst, but Ultimates 1 and 2,Ultimate F4,and Wolverine were just gigantic in terms of scope with big ***** constantly at stake, looking forward to his Hitch followup and the eventual jump to DC

Grant Morrison - All Star Superman is everything it's hyped up to be.I could read ASS alone and be convinced that GM is one crazy writer, amazing far out concepts in each issue and one insane imagination, didn't like his JLA stuff, but the Filth is pretty good so far

Mark Waid - JLA Year One,Kingdom Come,Birthright, all among my fav DC stories of all time,Brave and the Bold has been a fun book to read amongst DC's mess of stuff

Brad Meltzer - I personally love his approach to the DCU.Might be light on action sometimes, but the characterization makes up for it and he always strives for heartfelt stories instead of your average flash in the pan type thing.

Geoff Johns - His current GL and JSA books are among my top 5 books on my pull list.Rebirth melted my face and I've never recovered since. His Hawkman run with Robinson and Morales made me love the character even more.

Honorable mentions...

Matt Fraction - Punisher War Journal and Immortal Iron Fist have both been successful launches, quite obvious he loves to have fun with his books and I'm starting to really get a real voice from his work,I give it another year or 2,plus the Champions launch until he starts ranking at the top on my awesome barometer.

Greg Pak - He pulled off the gigantic Planet Hulk. The 14 parter dragged in parts, but wrapped up nicely and led into bigger things.
WWH and it's sequel are going to be a test to see how far he can take Hulk into these new waters and how well he does it.Bonus points for giving Hulk a solid supporting cast again and a real reason to smash puny humans.

Bendis - Lost me a while ago with New Avengers, but I still hold his DD run with Maleev as a modern classic

Allan Heinberg
- Young Avengers was chicken and waffles with a hefty serving of jalapeno cornbread on the side.Lots of potential as a comic writer,we'll see how his future projects go before I start calling him great.

Oh my, yes. I've forgotten about Lobdell. He was the X-Men of my childhood. Sometimes, he let a plot thread or two get away from him, but he was amazing with the characterization of Marvel's mutants. He gets added to my list out of nostalgia.

Where's he been recently?

Vaughan, Brubaker, Slott, PAD, Palmiotti and Gray, Busiek

Current:
Vaughan
Slott
Kirkman
Whedon
Busiek
Brubaker

Up and comers:
Fraction
Reed
McDuffie
Christos Gage

I don't know how I forgot him, he wrote some of my favourite x men stories, and helped create age of apocalypse which I love....

He did a few issues of Buffy's first comic a few years back...

Fave writers-
Ed Brubaker - Iron Fist, Cap.A. I'm not reading Daredevil...I will, when I have the money for trades.
Kirkman - Walking Dead, Marvel Zombies
Whedon - Astonishing X-Men. Again, same problem with money. Need to buy trades of his other work.
Greg Pak - Due to his Hulk run so far.
Ellis isn't too bad, either

Who was the writer for most of the Exiles comics? I know it's Claremont at the mo, but I've read every issue up towards 80ish, and I love the comic

I'm gonna be a snooby bastard

Phil Hester
Alex Robinson
CraigThompson
Colleen Coover
Dave Sim
Kyle Baker
Harvey Pekar
Evan Dorkin
Paul Pope
Paul Chadwick
Terry Moore
Guy Delise

I also agree on exiles...I don't think I can remember one bad arc on it...

Ah...Paul Pope, Terry Moore, Kyle Baker and the rest. Good picks. Pope's Heavy Liquid still remains a personal favorite of mine. Haven't heard of Colleen Coover, though.
