This one had it all, one of my most treasured possession. The torch nearly exhausted himself in testing his flame as a solution to peircing the inhuman's barrier where crystal was trapped.

And who chooses that moment to attack, none other than the original human torch himself.

As far as FF "firsts", fon't forget that FF #3 featured the first use of the famouse Stan Lee hyperbole: "The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World", which (slightly paraphrased) became part of the masthead in issue #4!

Is it still there?

That is indeed a cool cover. I always found it fascinating that Johnny's flame looked different than the original torches' flame. I used to think as a kid, "What made it different?" "They're both on fire." "How, and why can it look different?" "Wow! How does that work?" It was fascinating to me. Perplexing. Made you think.

The cover artist on FF2099 #3 I believe is Matthew Ryan (IIRC) but I will double check at home. You can see it on one of the pieces of rubble.

Taking a stab at it. The original torch said he had more control over his flame which he claimed to be hotter. I really think that the original torch's flame was generated from his epidermis as such his flame tended to slough off more as it burned. It would be similar to a log burning that is wet inside but dry on the outside, the tendency is for the dry parts to burn quickly but the inner part would be unnaffected.

In the case of the new Human Torch his entire DNA structure was changed by the cosmic rays and when he bursts into fire his entire body is consumed by the flames at the cellular level. that is why that bright red hue seems to be coming from within. That total combustion is also responsible for that corona that surrounds him ala the sun which is really hot at the core and most of what we see as the sun is the plasma corona.

This similarity I think also gives him that ability to go Nova as he can basically trigger that heat flare at a cellular level.

Hope that that sounds plausible, maybe someone can refine or come up with their own take.

That really is the most interesting thing I have heard all day. As mundane as that might sound to some that was a refreshing attempt at an old fascination of mine and puts a bright stamp on my day. I have a rehearsal with 23 adult musicians now to go through a piece of mine. Let's see if it is as refreshing as that post was to me. (Adults can be many times harder to deal with than kids....don't fool yourself) Thanks Highguard.

The original Human Torch had no control over his flame when created. According to his creator, he spontaneously burst into flame on contact with oxygen.

Curiously enough, he gained control over his flame when exposed to Nitrogen gas (go figure). Why? Don't know. These early comics didn't even TRY to come up with a plausible explanation.

When the title was revived briefly in 1953 or 54, the Torch was exposed to an atomic blast, which "super activated" his flame. This is where he gained the ability to increase his temperature.

Its also interesting to note that the depiction of the original Torch in the FF mag above is completely different from the way he is shown in the original HT title. After the first few appearances, he was being drawn almost exactly like Kirby drew Johnny Storm - red with yellow flame and thin black lines runnig through the body.

Alex Schomberg did a lot of incredible covers featuring the Torch, Namor and Cap during the war years. Do a Google image search on Marvel Mystery Comics and you'll see some amzing art!

Here's The original (rejected?) cover for
Fantastic Four #3 from 1962:
FantasticFour3AlternateCover.jpg

"The Menace of the Miracle Man!"
by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky

All Images copyright Marvel Comics

Any back story on why this was rejected? Remember than Stan claimed he wasn't going to have costumes for his team - wonder if Martin Goodman pushed him into making a few changes to make them a bit more into the "typical" superhero format????

Were winding down, its sad really..i can imagine that plenty of these Fantastic Four stories (except the original series) were immediately forgotten.I mean, think about it..did anyone read these?

Ok, I have to say it, I hate the way Stan and Jack protray Sue. She's a whiney little whimp who's almost always getting into trouble and has to be rescued 9 times out of 10. Every once and a while she saves the other's butts, but from what I can tell, that's pretty rare. And don't even get me started on her changing her hair style and then freaking everyone out so they'd notice it. I want to shake her and tell her to grow a back bone.

Ok, I'm done venting about that right now. Off to vent about the Surfer's voice again.

>^..^<

Well, considering that this was written by in the early 1960's it's not very surprising. How many horror movies from that era would have a couple running from the monster and the woman would always have to be half dragged and then would trip over her own feet? Remember it would be around 10 years before women's lib would hit full force.

If you were to read some of the letters pages from back then, fans wanted Sue dropped from the team because they thought she was dead weight. Lee and Kirby took those criticisms to heart and soon she would do more than just turn invisible, which was her only power at first. They added the force field capability and late in the Lee/Kirby run she saves a whole Latverian village, shortly after delivering a bouncing baby Franklin...

She's come a long way, baby :woot:

ff17sue9nw.jpg

ff86p20ma7.jpg

She left her brand new baby with someone else!? (Don't even get me started about the fact that she fed her baby formula.) Ok, I know this is all fiction, but no woman gets back into pre-pregancy shape that fast

Sorry, after my first kid was born, you needed a crowbar to get him out of my arms and even formula manufaturers have a little line in their ads saying that breast feeding is best.

Man, I'm being awfully cranky tonight, aren't I? I need another margarita. ;)
