New game enemy takes a solid day to defeat
Players pass out, get sick during extreme battle.

By Ben Silverman

If it's good enough for Cartman, it's good enough for Square-Enix.

The developers of the online role-playing game Final Fantasy XI seemingly borrowed a page from the Emmy-winning South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" by updating the game with one of the longest - and most physically grueling - video game fights ever. Introduced in the game's latest downloadable update, the boss monster "Pandemonium Warden" remained perfectly fit after a group of high-level adventurers wailed away at it nonstop for over 18 hours straight.

Though the seemingly unbeatable boss will not prevent people from 'completing' the game -- persistent online games typically do not "end" like most single-player games -- it has sparked debate over what exactly the game's developers, Square-Enix, expect out of their devoted fan base. Message boards have lit up with disgruntled players calling out the company for failing to respect its very own in-game warning telling players they have "no desire to see your real life suffer as a consequence [of playing]. Don't forget your friends, your family, your school or your work."

Easy for them to say. While the beast continually healed, the gamers weren't so lucky.

"People were passing out and getting physically ill," leaders of the player guild said in a forum post. "We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible news story about how video games ruin people's lives."

Too late.

What a bunch of losers......after an hour I would have gotten the disc and then proceeded to sell it at Game Stop. I have never played Final Fantasy anyways...boring bunch of lame tripe.

Thanks for that brilliant contribution.

Did you expect me to say that I played this for 18 hours and I totally went away from it with a sense of accomplishment:huh:

I bet once you defeat the villain, there'll be a congratulatory message at the end "You suck at life!" lol

More like that other South Park episode about Guitar Hero, where Stan and Kyle complete a perfect run and they get the message (and I quote, not MY words) "You...Are...[BLACKOUT]***S!"[/BLACKOUT]
Hey, if they take one nod from a video game episode of South Park, might as well use another.

Like that was so much better... :whatever:

Seriously, that should be a lesson to all those who actually stayed at their computer for 18 hours straight. It isn't the company's fault you have no sense of self control. That's like going to an all-you-can-eat buffet and sew them after getting a heart attack from eating 20 pounds of fatty foods. Seriously people, take responsibility for your own actions.

I'm a social video game player, I can stop anytime I want. :o

Anyway, yeah, I love save points. I will play usually tops 2-3 hours but even that is rare. I would come home for work, do a mission or 2 of GTA IV (15-20 minutes) and then shut it off.

What geniuses would build an undefeatable boss into a game anyway? What's the point?

To teach people lessons. That the whole game is pointless all together!

Maybe to see if kids will actually commit hours and hours to the game? I don't know. I still think the kids are stupid to do that for 18 hours.

They just said it was taking too long and they weren't feeling well so they gave up. The only complaining anyone did was for making that part of the game too hard to beat.

No one is "sew"ing anybody, there isn't any responsibility to be taken.

As a former gameaholic I can tell you that at that age, or any age, people will spend literally hours at a screen trying to beat something that appears unbeatable, and will justify it to boot.

If a game has a boss that takes 18 hours to beat, you don't need to play it.

Live, people.

Fine not sew, but complain to the chef for making their food too irresistible. Seriously, why would you complain? Just don't play. Simple as that.

As if that was any better still.
I actually laughed at the stupidity of your post here, the irony behind it all is that whenever you claim a poster isn't added to the conversation (when they actually are ex: chaster, me) you ATTEMPT to make a witty comment that we could do without. See I don't have a problem replying to you here cause I was already going to post a reply to Leto. :whatever:

Exactly! Don't complain over **** you don't have to do. Don't stab yourself in the foot and complaint to the knife company for making the knife too sharp.

I used to play Final Fantasy XI (quitted when my pally got to 62), and this news is definitely crazy. I had a friend who used to organize his guild to run AFII instances, and that took several hours and alot of work. But this is just nuts. I wonder if Square Enix is a sadist and wanted their gamers to suffer playing their game.

As a former player, do you REALLY have to ask that question?

Good question. I remember there was a time when my group and I had to enter a cavern for a leveling session, and to avoid being aggro we had to use both invisible potion and silent powder, so we won't be seen nor heard by the wandering mobs. Of course, these worn off over time so you have to reapply it when you are nowhere near a mob, or else it will detect you. Oh, and I didn't have a map of that cavern back then. Needless to say, it wasn't a very fun experience.
