Fire Emblem Fates

Fire Emblem Fates Gets Its Boo Camp And Beach Brawl DLC. February 25, 2016 . 10:30am

Fire Emblem Fates’ experience boosting Boo Camp and vacation CG-earning Beach Brawl DLC maps are available.

The first two paid pieces of DLC are now available for Fire Emblem Fates. Nintendo has released Beach Brawl and Boo Camp, two maps that cost $2.49 each. One is a rather straightforward means of gathering additional experience for your characters, while the other offers a lighthearted side story with special character illustrations.

Fire Emblem Fates’ Beach Brawl is the story-match. The eight siblings from both Hoshido and Nohr are competing to see who deserves a ticket to go on a beach vacation Corrin has offered all of them. Each one has reasons and excuses for not wanting or being able to go. In this match, you decide on a team, either Hoshido or Nohr, then choose which of the siblings from that group you’d like to see take a vacation. You’ll then be entered into a battle where you fight using that sibling and his or her two retainers.
WVW69i7r_kY2CkRvPh_thumb.jpg

These versions of Xander, Ryoma, Camilla, Hinoka, Leo, Takumi, Elise, and Sakura and their retainers aren’t based on the characters you’re using in your game, so levels and skills are predetermined. In the case of Xander’s side, he’s a level 5 Paladin with a stick, umbrella, and Dracoshield. He’s accompanied by a level 3 Hero version of Laslow with an umbrella, bone axe, and Allegro Harp and level 3 Great Knight Peri with a bottle, Raider Axe, and Azura’s salve. They all have A-level supports with each other. Keep your group together, make use of the items you earn from beating enemies, and you should be fine. When you win, you’ll get to see the sibling you chose in a swimsuit on a beach, engaged in vacation activities.

Boo Camp is a standard experience map, much like Fire Emblem Awakening’s EXPonential Growth. You can bring 12 units into this battle, There are 10 enemies on the map at the start, standard (green) and promoted (yellow) Faceless. After the first turn, one of the tombstones on the map will spawn additional Faceless and Golems after each turn. I was able to beat the map in 5 turns, with my over-leveled Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation party. In terms of experience, the standard Faceless give the least and Golems and high level promoted Faceless the most.

To get the new Fire Emblem Fates DLC, head to the Dragon’s Gate from the world map in a save file. You can purchase them separately there. If you purchased the Map Pack 1, choose to Purchase Content. The game will say an update is available for content that you have previously downloaded. Choose to update, and then Beach Brawl and Boo Camp will be added to your game.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS.

Siliconera Community Fire Emblem Fates My Castle Call. February 26, 2016 . 1:30pm

Submit your Fire Emblem Fates castle address. Next week, Siliconera will feature 10-25 of the community’s best, with descriptions for each one.

Fire Emblem Fates can be quite the social game, even unintentionally. Everyone gets to create their own castle town, arranging buildings, features, and defenders to their liking. You can focus on making a defensive stronghold, someplace pretty, or location to pick up essential items. It’s as simple as arranging things, getting access to WiFi, and updating your data.

To celebrate that feature, we’re putting out a call for castles from the Siliconera community. We want to show off what people have done in their copies of Fire Emblem Fates and create something of an abbreviated directory by featuring some submitted castles.

Here’s how this will work. Anyone with a castle in Fire Emblem Fates that would like to be featured should comment on this article, noting your castle address and its name. Over the next few days, I’ll go through the entries submitted between 1:30pm PT on February 26 and 10pm PT on February 27. I’ll cultivate a list of between 10 and 25 of the best castles submitted, taking a screenshot of each one and noting what makes it worth a trip for potential visitors. Next week, we’ll have the list of featured castles for people to peruse.

As a side note, remember to be courteous when visiting someone else’s castle! Exchanging Calling Cards and accessories is the only way to create Bond Units with other players. These units will be an original character inspired by the two avatars of the players. Gifting accessories doesn’t actually remove them from your inventory, so feel free to share with anyone you visit!

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS. Siliconera’s castle can be found at 01720-47948-56162-86246.

Fire Emblem Fates Gold And Weapons DLC Maps Released. March 3, 2016 . 11:10am

The Ghostly Gold and Museum Melee maps are now available for Fire Emblem Fates.

The next two Fire Emblem Fates DLC maps have been released. Like last week’s Boo Camp, both of these maps are designed to help players who are having trouble earning gold or finding equipment in-game. Both Ghostly Gold and Museum Melee are $2.49 each.

Fire Emblem Fates’ Ghostly Gold brings back this entry’s bandit twins, Lloyd and Llewelyn. (If you had Orochi or Niles in your party when you recruited Kana and stayed until turn 8 of that paralogue, you may have recruited these handsome devils.) In this 8-turn map, the party learns of another world where gold is easily acquired. Waves of enemies then appear, with later waves and stronger foes carrying more gold. They’ll carry them in 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 amounts. You can earn over 30,000 gold if you manage to defeat every enemy. It’s also a pretty good map for earning experience.

The Museum Melee map is another 8-turn map set, appropriately enough, in the Interrealm Museum. Here, there are five treasure chests around the map and enemies carry weapons that can be dropped. (Make sure people in your party know Locktouch to open them!) When I played through the map, the chests contained a Steel Bow, Brave Lance, Snake Spirit, Heart Seal, and Eternal Seal. Some of the weapons enemies dropped included a Hexlock Spear, Fimbulvetr tome, Iron Axe, Killer Axe, Steel Shuriken, Great Club, Iron Katana, Sidelong Yumi, and Iron Sword. Every turn, more enemies will appear, most carrying more weapons that will drop when they’re defeated.

If you’ve purchased the Fire Emblem Fates Map Pack 1 pass, you’ll need to visit the Dragon’s Gate in-game. Choose the Purchase Content option. The game will say there’s an update to content you already own. Allow it to update, and both Ghostly Gold and Museum Melee will be downloaded to your system.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS. March 3 is Azura’s birthday, so make sure you talk to her in your castle to an item and boosts.

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation’s Path Now Available. March 10, 2016 . 9:00am

Revelation, the neutral storyline for Fire Emblem Fates, is now available for people who own the Birthright and Conquest versions of the game.

The Fire Emblem Fates downloadable maps are taking a break this week, in favor of the third campaign. Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation is available for people who own either Birthright or Conquest to download.

The Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation route is a neutral path which allows people to recruit characters from the other two routes, as well as learn some truths about the characters and their world. It also means that some characters, like Yukimura, can’t be recruited in the game. However, Revelation is the only route where Fuga will join your army. It also allows you to have all child characters at once.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS. Adding the Revelation route to your copy of Birthright or Conquest will be $19.99. People interested in more details about this path can read our thoughts about it.

Enjoying Fire Emblem Fates’ Less Prominent Features. March 10, 2016 . 1:30pm

As you near the end of your Fire Emblem Fates journey, don’t forget to make a Bond Unit, try a Wireless Battle, and claim your Fire Emblem: Awakening accessory.

There’s a lot to do in Fire Emblem Fates, but that means there are also a few extra features that don’t always get a lot of attention when people are visiting people’s castles, going through DLC maps, building up supports, and leveling every character up to a 200-point unit. It’s easy to forget about the Wireless Battle options and Bond Units, as well as the Fire Emblem: Awakening bonus.

Actually, let’s start there. People who have StreetPass enabled on Fire Emblem Fates get a bonus accessory. You need to go to “Extras” from the game’s main menu and choose the “Presents” option. You’ll get an Emblem Shield, also known as the Fire Emblem and Shield of Seals, which Chrom carried in Fire Emblem Awakening. It offers –2 damage while worn when you head to other castles to battle. It helps make the character who wears it a little more powerful.

Speaking of things that can make you stronger, have you made a Bond Unit yet? Now that there are a lot of us playing Fire Emblem Fates and we’ve got substantial armies and castles, it’s a good time to start considering working on Bond Units. These are special units born from online and StreetPass interactions. Here’s how it works. You visit someone and swap Calling Cards and accessories. (Don’t worry about losing the accessory. It won’t disappear from your inventory, but the recipient will still get one.)

Now, here’s where some secondhand information comes in. Since Siliconera’s castle is in the Rankings and gets so many visits, I haven’t actually been able to make a Bond Unit yet. Some friends and I have visited each other multiple times since launch, we’ve swapped accessories each time, I check twice a day on my 3DS to make sure the data updates, and Fire Emblem Fates has never recorded my receiving any gifts from them. My StreetPass Results and Feedback are always maxed out, and nothing’s happened yet. However, I have two friends who say they have received Bond Units after sending accessories to each other three times. I’ve seen their Bond Units in person, so I can verify it does actually, eventually happen.

When you do get a Bond Unit, it’ll arrive at level one. One of its skills will be determined by the versions of Fire Emblem Fates the two players who made it were playing. It will also get one skill from each player. It’s classes will be the ones that are accessed via Heart Seals from both avatars. It’ll be distinctive, as its character avatar will have a mark on its cheek.

Finally, there are the Wireless Battles. These can happen locally with a friend who’s in the same room as you or online with a random stranger or friend. In each case, you have to first prepare a team of five units. Once you set up a match, you’ll also select a map you’d like to use and whether you want handicaps applied. The game randomly chooses a map from the two selected and pairs you with another Fire Emblem Fates person also searching for a battle. You go through a match, which can be set to last three, five, or ten minutes.

The thing about the random online matches is that they’re just that. They’re entirely random. You don’t know who you’ll end up against. I’ve participated in 20, and feel so sorry for the people I’ve mercilessly defeated. They had no idea they were going to face a team with a power level of 1,096. When three people encountered my version of Corrin, who’s stat sum is at 251 right now, they surrendered the battle after their unit fell to her. It’s a fun feature, but almost feels like an afterthought. There’s no real sense of fairness here for people who aren’t prepared for tougher battles, and I’ve been avoiding it as a result.

Even if you feel like you’re coming to the end of your Fire Emblem Fates journey, don’t forget that there are these extra elements to the game. Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS in North America and Japan, and it will come to Europe on May 20, 2016.

Fire Emblem Fates Sells About 400,000 In The US, Pokémon Breaks eShop Records . March 11, 2016 . 12:30am

The latest NPD sales report shares information on how some of Nintendo’s notable titles performed in the month of February 2016,
which saw the release of Fire Emblem Fates and Pokémon on eShop.

The latest NPD sales report shares information on how some of Nintendo’s notable titles performed in the month of February 2016, which saw the release of Fire Emblem Fates and Pokémon on eShop.

For starters, Fire Emblem Fates is said to have sold close to 400,000 copies with both retail and digital versions, which by far surpasses what they had in the series’ predecessor in Fire Emblem Awakening.

NPD Group’s Liam Callhan shared the following on the title:

“If sales for Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, and the special edition for Fire Emblem Fates were combined, this title would have ranked third for new physical software sales. The combined first month sales of Fire Emblem Fates would more than triple the first month sales of the next-highest game within the franchise, Fire Emblem: Awakening
Additionally, the company brought back the original Pokémon games to 3DS with Red, Blue, and Yellow versions, and they all did well on their own end.

The NPD report had more to share on the Nintendo software:

“February was a fantastic month for Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, the newest entries in the critically acclaimed strategy RPG series from Nintendo. The games took two top-10 spots on the best-sellers list from the NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales. In little more than a week, the two versions of Fire Emblem Fates totaled nearly 400,000 combined units sold, including physical and digital versions. This far outpaces 2013’s Fire Emblem Awakening game, the series’ previous record-holder in the United States, and is a testament to both the longstanding popularity and rapidly growing fan base of the franchise.

Momentum should continue with today’s release of Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, a digital-only third version of the game available for purchase to anyone who owns either Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright or Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. Fans have weekly DLC to look forward to purchasing, as well.

February also saw the digital debut of the 2D Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow games in Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. The games instantly shot to the top of the charts, and together, combined to break the first-week Nintendo eShop sales record previously held by Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

With classic graphics and timeless gameplay, these versions of the original Pokémon adventure are proving to be a popular way for fans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series.”

Everything You Need To Know About Fire Emblem Fates’ Royal Royales. March 17, 2016 . 1:30pm

The latest Fire Emblem Fates DLC map allows you to get items that can allow characters to become Dark Falcons and Dread Fighters, as well as permanent stat boosting items.

After taking a break last week, due to the official release of the Revelation route, Fire Emblem Fates’ DLC has resumed with Royal Royal. This is a map that may be of interest to many, as it brings a class that gives one of Fire Emblem: Awakening’s best skills to the game: Galeforce. Though, some may already have it, due to Path bonuses.

Fire Emblem Fates’ Royal Royale is a preset match, much like the Beach Brawl DLC released on February 25, 2016. Where that map allowed people to pick one Hoshido or Nohr sibling and their retainer to back, in exchange for an illustration that would show that sibling enjoying a beach vacation, this one has you pick one of the Hoshido or Nohr princesses to earn the Dread Fighter or Dark Falcon class. This means you’ll be using preset characters to complete a challenge, with Hoshido siblings giving you one Dread Scroll and Nohr siblings giving you one Ebon Wing.

The map begins with the Rainbow Sage explaining how he called Elise, Camilla, Sakura, and Hinoka to aid Corrin. However, it isn’t the Corrin they know. It’s a Corrin from the Ongoing World, which is still in the midst of war, while these three sisters are from the Finished World. They all agree to help, at which he says the four brothers from Hoshido and Nohr have all already agreed as well. The siblings must all fight one another to see who is strongest. The Rainbow Sage will then tap into that power and send it to the Corrin that’s in danger to aid him or her.

Once you decide whether you’ll fight as Nohr or Hoshido and pick a sibling, the battle will begin. You’ll control a group that includes the sibling you chose and their two retainers. All parties are preset, with the royal family member at level 10 and retainers at level 8 of an advanced class. In the case of Team Camilla, Camilla is a Malig Knight with Camilla’s Axe, Ragnarok, and a Talisman, Selena is a Bow Knight with a Blessed Bow, Selena’s Blade, and a Concoction, and Beruka is a Wyvern Lord with Beruka’s Axe, a spear, and a Shell Horn. You have to face the eight other siblings and their retainers, who are all at similar levels. Opposing siblings and their retainers will drop permanent stat boosting and temporary healing items like a Goddess Icon, Shell Horn, Azura’s Salve, Draco Shield, Allegro Harp, Speedwing, Concoction, Secret Book, Spirit Dust, Energy Drop, and Seraph Robe. There are also Dragon Veins on the map that allow you to duplicate all allies and halt foes for one turn. Winning gets you the Dread Scroll or Ebon Wing mentioned earlier. More of these class changing items can be earned by replaying the map. Unlike other maps, this one does not take Phoenix Mode into account. You will get a game over if your character and his or her retainers die.

The Dread Scroll, which is also available as a Path Bonus for purchasing two storylines, turns someone into a Dread Fighter. This class can be leveled up to level 40, much like the Butler/Maid class. It isn’t a gender-locked class, and people who are Dread Fighters use swords, axes, and shurikens. It learns Even Keel, which protects against 4 less damage on even turns, Iron Will, which reduces magic damage by 4 if an enemy initiates an attack with a magical spell, Clarity, which heals status effects twice as fast, and Aggressor, which adds +7 damage when the unit initiates an attack. Since making Asugi a Dread Fighter, I’ve noticed his strength and resistance stats were higher than before.

The Ebon Wing, which is also a Path Bonus for purchasing all three storylines, turns a character into a Dark Falcon. This is a pegasus knight capable of using lances and magic. Like the Dread Fighter and Butler/Maid, it also caps out at level 40 (without Eternal Seals). It learns Speed +2, Rally Movement, which increases movement range for allies in a three tile radius by 3, Relief, which restores 20% HP if no other units are in a 3 tile radius, and Galeforce, which allows a unit to act again if they defeat a unit that turn. Galeforce is the selling point for this unit, naturally. I made both Elise and Azura Dark Falcons as soon as possible, and while Azura’s magic stat never really flourished in the role, Elise is an incredible example of a perfect Dark Falcon. At level 50, her overall rating is 195, with her magic at 38, her speed maxed out at 37, her luck maxed out at 34, and her resistance at 39.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS. Royal Royale is $2.49, unless you purchased the Map Pack 1 for $17.99. If you did purchase the Map Pack 1, go to the Dragon Gate in-game and choose Purchase Content. The game will then update, adding Royal Royale.

Learning Fire Emblem Fates’ Backstory With The Hidden Truths Add-ons . March 24, 2016 . 1:30pm

Odin, Laslow, and Selena are the stars of the latest Fire Emblem Fates’ DLC maps.

It’s Thursday, which means there are two new Fire Emblem Fates DLC maps to grab. This week’s installments are Hidden Truths 1 and 2, story-heavy xenologues. This is a two-parter that acts as a prequel to the events of this game and stars Odin, Laslow, and Selena. If you played Fire Emblem: Awakening and were wondering why this trio seems so familiar, this add-on will answer some questions.

Before I start talking about what happens in each map and what people can expect, allow me to offer a warning. The Hidden Truths 1 and 2 maps are best enjoyed after completing the Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest and Revelation routes. It has spoilers for both storylines. You could probably get away with only playing Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, though.
WVW69jB9ZjY9GHBF7g_thumb.jpg

As for a brief, spoiler-free summary: Fire Emblem Fates’ Hidden Truths explains how Odin, Laslow, and Selena found themselves serving Leo, Camilla, and Xander. Like the Beach Brawl and Royal Royale maps, you’ll control preset characters. They’ll have different character portraits and appearances than the ones you’ve been using in the game. On the first map, Odin will be a level 20 Myrmidon with Vantage and Duelist’s Blow, then he’ll switch to a level 18 Dark Mage on the second. Laslow and Selena will be level 20 Mercenaries on both and each will know Good Fortune and Strong Riposte.

In the first Hidden Truths map, the goal is to defeat all enemies. 22 enemies initially appear, and more will eventually spawn as you play. All of the enemies, other than the level 14 boss, are at level 1. Odin, Laslow, and Selena can all talk to each other on the map, to offer additional information about the situation. Some enemies will also drop items like Energy Drops, Speedwings, and Talismans, which will be added to your inventory.

The second Hidden Truths map asks players to escape at the upper right corner, defeating the boss along the way. Additional enemies will spawn as you play. Again, all three can talk to each other, and each know their personal skills. There are three Dragon Veins that can be used after the characters use the First Blood item in their inventories. Restoring one causes a fissure that will damage enemies standing on that area. I recommend using all three, as they will cause a fourth to open. The fourth will lift the island to a higher level and add healing tiles, while also calling in more enemies.

There are two rewards earned from this Fire Emblem Fates map. The first item is a Fell Brand, which allows one male character to become a Grandmaster. This allows the character to learn the skills Ignis, Rally Spectrum, Tactical Advice, and Solidarity. Ignis adds half of the magic or strength stat to the other while attacking. Rally Spectrum increases all stats of allies in a four tile radius by +2. Tactical Advice increases the hit of a lead unit when the Grandmaster is in a Guard Stance supporting it by 10. Finally, Solidarity increases the critical rate and evade by 10 for all allies next to the Grandmaster.

The other reward is First Blood, which can be earned multiple times. This is an item that permanently allows a character to use Dragon Veins, after it is applied to them. Normally, only characters with royal blood can use a Dragon Vein.

Both Hidden Truths maps are bundled together for Fire Emblem Fates for $4.49. People who purchased the Map Pack 1 can go to the Dragon Gate and Select Purchase Content to update the game and get access to the new maps. Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS.

Calling In The Vanguards With Fire Emblem Fates’ Vanguard Dawn DLC. March 31, 2016 . 1:30pm

Fire Emblem Fates’ Vanguard Dawn map gives a Vanguard Brand as a reward every time the map is cleared. It allows male units to become Vanguards like the Ike amiibo.
34 Thoughts Read >

It’s Thursday, which means another Fire Emblem Fates map DLC update. This week we have one new map, called Vanguard Dawn. It’s a rather important one, as it adds the Vanguard class to the game. Every time you beat the map, you’ll receive a Vanguard Brand that can be used on a male unit.

It’s also important because it’s a callback. Fire Emblem Fates’ Vanguard Dawn is based on a Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn stage. Your goal is to survive for 12 turns or go after the three bosses. There are multiple waves of enemies, making it something of a gauntlet. The map is a mirror image of the original map, and thus poses the same sorts of challenges. However, if someone has the Phoenix mode enabled, defeated allies will still respawn after being killed.

There are about 40 enemies to start on the Vanguard Dawn map. They’re all advanced units, with the “weakest” ones being around level 12. You’re allowed to have 15 allies on the map. I recommend having some characters with strong defenses, like Generals or Great Knights, blocking the stairways leading up to your main force. These are great spots to put Effie and Benny, if you’ve been working with them. Use the impassable barricades to your advantage. Place strong archers like Takumi and Kiragi and mages like Leo and Ophelia back there. Also, have as many healers around as possible. You need to survive 12 turns or defeat the bosses, and either way it’s a difficult challenge.

I also recommend having some Dark Fliers or Falcon Knights on hand. The boss characters are the ones holding skill scrolls. (These will drop when they’re defeated, naturally.) If you want to get these for units, you’ll need to send someone out to try and topple at least one of the bosses. A level 20 Onmyoji holds the Veteran Intuition skill scroll, a level 20 General has Aether, and a level 20 Swordmaster has Heavy Blade. A few other enemies are holding Gold Bars.

People playing Fire Emblem Fates with amiibo will already have some idea of what to expect from the Vanguard class. It’s Ike’s class. Male characters who become Vanguards can use swords and axes. They learn Aether, which offers two consecutive hits that use the Sol and Luna skill, Heavy Blade, which offers strength +3 and speed –1, Veteran Intuition, which offers +15 critical evade, and Strengthtaker, which adds +2 strength after every enemy beaten, up to 10. I made Xander into a Vanguard, and it’s working pretty well for him.

The Vanguard Dawn DLC also offers skill scrolls for Aether, Heavy Blade, and Veteran’s Intuition. It’s a good way to get these skills for female units who didn’t become Great Lords. Aether is a good fit for any character with a high skill stat, since the skill stat divided by two is the trigger percentage for the ability.

Fire Emblem Fates’ Vanguard Dawn is available today, either in the $17.99 Map Pack 1 or $1.99 single map. People who own the Map Pack can get it by going to the Dragon Gate, choosing Purchase Content, and allowing the game up update. Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS.

Catching Up With Fire Emblem Fates’ Anna On The Run DLC . April 7, 2016 . 1:30pm

Anna’s ready to join your Fire Emblem Fates army, provided you purchase the Anna on the Run DLC.

19 Thoughts Read >

WVW69jFvPVgv2BY50S_thumb.jpg

Fire Emblem Fates has a new map today, and it’s one that brings back a familiar face. People who purchase Anna on the Run can add Anna to their character roster. For those who are unaware, Anna is in every main Fire Emblem game except Fire Emblem Gaiden. The first time people play through the map, she’s added as a playable character.

Anna on the Run should look familiar. It’s inspired by Anna the Merchant, Fire Emblem: Awakening’s fourth Paralogue. As in that map, Anna is a merchant being pursued by bandits. It’s up to the player and party to rescue her before bandits get her. In fact, the map is nearly identical. The only difference is, this time there are no treasure chests to raid. Staircases are in their place, and Anna will flee through one any time she’s attacked.

Your primary goal in this map is to offer support for Anna. There are 14 units there, and they’re all Berserkers wielding axes and clubs. I’d recommend having one or two dragon riders or pegasus knights, mainly because they’ll be able to reach Anna faster and back her up. A Falcon Knight especially would be helpful, since those units can use healing staves and rods.

As for the other units, this is a good map for characters who use swords, magic, and bows. A few of the enemies do have Throwing Clubs and Hand Axes, and one near the back has a Bolt Axe, so be aware of increased ranges. Overall, it isn’t too difficult a map. All of the enemies have 109 hit stat, but sword-users and characters with high avoidance stats should be fine.

Anna’s starting class and base classes are a bit different in Fire Emblem Fates than they were in Fire Emblem: Awakening. (Perhaps because this is a different sister?) In the previous game, she arrived as a Trickster with Locktouch and Movement +1. While her initial skills remain the same, she joins your army this time as an Outlaw. Her other base class options allow her to switch to a Troubadour or Apothecary, meaning her promotion options are Adventurer, Bow Knight, Maid, Mechanist, Merchant, and Strategist. Her only possible supports are Corrin and, if she marries a male Corrin, Kana.

In terms of stats and options, Anna is a lot like Midori. She has extraordinarily high luck. She also has very good magic, skill, and resistance stats, so someone might want to consider using her as a Strategist to take advantage of that. However, setting her as an Adventurer or Merchant, so she can learn Lucky Seven, which increases accuracy and avoidance by 20 for the first seven turns, or Spendthrift, so she can use a gold bar to increase damage dealt or reduce damage taken by 10.

Though personally, I’m going to put off using her until the A Gift from Anna DLC is distributed on April 14, 2016. This is free DLC that gives players either one Sighting Lens or one Witch’s Mark. The Witch’s Mark will allow one female character to change to the Witch class. Given Anna’s magic potential, reclassing her as a Witch so she gets Shadowgift, so she can use Dark Magic regardless of class, and gets Toxic Brew, which reduces enemy’s movement to zero and avoidance by 20.

The Fire Emblem Fates Anna on the Run map is $1.99. People who have purchased the $17.99 Map Pack 1 can get it by heading to the Dragon Gate, picking Purchase Content, and updating the game. Fire Emblem Fates is now available in North America and Japan on the Nintendo 3DS. It will come to Europe on May 20, 2016.

Setting Our Sights On Fire Emblem Fates’ Ballistician Blitz DLC. April 14, 2016 . 1:30pm

The latest Fire Emblem Fates add-on introduces players to Ballisticians. Complete the Ballistician Blitz map to earn a Sighting Lens that will allow a male character to switch to that class

7 comments Read >

It’s Thursday, which means another Fire Emblem Fates map has been released. This one will come in handy for people who enjoy earning extra skills and reclassing characters, because it adds the Ballistician class to the game. Every time you complete the Ballistician Blitz map, you receive a Sighting Lens that allows a male unit to be become a Ballistician.

First, let’s go over the map. Since completing it allows you access to the Ballistician class, it helps you see what they’re capable of by making most of your opponents Ballisticians. There are three roads leading to the opponent’s central base, and you start with five of your units at the end of the uppermost path, six on the middle path, and three on the lowest one. There are 12 Ballisticians total on the map, as well as four other supporting units. The goal is to seize the enemy’s fort.

The Ballisticians have a good range and are effective against flying units. You want to try and get your characters as close as possible to them, as quickly as possible, to take them out. (However, they didn’t seem to be as effective as some archers, as they weren’t able to take my level 30 Falcon Knight Azura out in one hit.) Like archers, they can’t deal with attacks directly adjacent to them. Along the way, make sure you visit the village on the center path. Anna will give you a Rainbow Tonic for stopping by. The uppermost path is easiest to clear, so perhaps put your strongest and most mobile units on that route. It isn’t too challenging a map, though, since all you need to do is seize the enemy’s base, so you should earn the Sighting Lens without too much trouble.

Ballistician characters have good strength and skill stats, but aren’t so hot in other areas. Their health, defense, and resistance tends to be very low, and their speed is practically nonexistent compared to other stats. You basically want to use them in a map where you can stick them behind a wall, surround them with other characters so enemies can’t get near, and let them go to town. Vanguard Dawn would be a good map for Ballisticians, and I imagine they’d be handy in a Conquest stage where you need to hold out against a group of enemies. Have them use their cannon, which hits 4 spaces in a cross shape at once, and you’re all set. But be careful, as friendly fire is possible with the cannon attacks.

It’s also not a good class to switch to for Skill acquisition, because all of the abilities you learn can only be used when the character is a Ballistician. Which is great if you leave them as-is, but not so much if you hoped for Opportunity Shot to carry over. By the way, Opportunity Shot is perhaps the best skill. It uses the character’s skill stat to determine a percentage chance of attacking an enemy within range automatically at the beginning of a turn. Survey is helpful too, as it increases the Cannon command’s hit rate by 10. Combine that with Rifled Barrel, which increases a cannon’s range by 1 and inner/outer range by –1 and Surefooted, which gives a Ballistician +1 and makes all terrain only cost 1 movement point to cross. All of these help make up for the Ballistician’s other weaknesses and failings.

As for possible Ballistician characters, I recommend using someone who normally isn’t part of your party. Maybe a character like Shura. Someone who already has a proficiency with bows. I’m using Asugi as my Ballistician, since I didn’t really have a place for him otherwise. Since Kagero was his mother, already giving him +5 to strength and +3 to skill, he’s fit into the role rather well.

Fire Emblem Fates’ Ballistician Blitz is $1.99. If you bought the $17.99 Map Pack 1, it’s immediately available to download. Head to the Dragon’s Gate, go to Purchase Content, and update. The map will join all your other DLC maps.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available in North America and Japan. It will be released in Europe on May 20, 2016.

North America’s Fire Emblem Fates 3DS Home Themes Feature The Most Popular Characters. April 21, 2016 . 10:30am

The latest Fire Emblem Fates Home themes for the Nintendo 3DS feature the 8 characters voted most popular in an October 2015 Famitsu poll.

Back in October 2015, Famitsu conducted a poll to determine the most popular characters in Fire Emblem Fates. Readers voted, and the results shows Leo was the most popular male character, Corrin was the most popular female character, and the runners up were Xander, Takumi, Jakob, Camilla, Oboro, and Elise. Nintendo then released two Nintendo 3DS Home themes based on the results of this quiz, one with the four most popular female characters and another with the four most popular males. Both of these themes will be available in North America today.

Called Fire Emblem Fates: The Men and Fire Emblem Fates: The Women here, the two themes are $1.99 each in the Nintendo 3DS Theme Shop. Both themes have the game’s “Abundant Solace” as their background music, and sound effects from the game play when you move, select games, or open folders. Both the top and bottom images in this theme are static.

Taking Fire Emblem Fates’ Witches’ Trial. April 21, 2016 . 1:30pm

Today’s Fire Emblem Fates map, Witches’ Trial, gives people a chance to earn a Witch’s Mark that turns a female unit into a warping witch.

23 comments Read >

The last Fire Emblem Fates’ DLC map is here. Today, Witches’ Trial is added to the game. Upon completing this map, people get the Witch’s Mark, an item that allows you to make female characters into witches. The map itself isn’t very difficult, and the reward is absolutely worth the effort it takes to complete it.

The Fire Emblem Fates’ Witches’ Trial map may look familiar to people who have been following the series for years and collecting import copies of the game. It originally appeared in Fire Emblem Gaiden, the second entry in the series. Which is fitting, since that’s the only other Fire Emblem game with the Witch class.

Despite this being a map introducing people to the Witch class, there’s only one Witch unit on the field. She guards a fort, which must be seized to complete the stage. The map splits into two paths, with the upper one leading to the witch has a hero paired with a sniper and four generals guarding her. The other branch has two Paladins, three snipers, and four generals waiting to attack. If you can hold out until the eleventh turn, one Witch with a Warp scroll will appear. (Edit: My Gale Force army didn’t last that long – thanks to Zonic for the tip!)

Given all the generals, it’s a good idea to send magic users out onto this map, to take advantage of their low resistance. A few warriors with Armorslayer weapons will he helpful too. If you already have a witch in your party, thanks to the free Anna’s Gift DLC that offered either one Witch’s Mark or one Sighting Lens, then sending a flying unit to help the witch quickly advance to fight the other witch could help. Someone who’s a Malig Knight with the Bowbreaker skill would be best, since their high defense and resistance stats would help keep them safe against the generals and the hit and avoidance +50 against bow and yumi wielders would help them against the snipers.

Once you’ve completed the map, you earn one Witches’ Mark and can make one of your women into a witch. Let me warn you, this is a role that has the potential to be gamebreaking. With the right units deployed and other skills learned, witches can work with flying units to put a halt to opponents’ actions.
WVW69jIGM24PqyNzpw_thumb.jpg

This is primarily due to Warp, a skill learned at level 25 that lets the witch teleport next to an ally and act again. While you can only Warp once per turn, you can warp as many times as you’d like throughout the battle. Combine that with Toxic Brew, the level 35 skill that reduces an enemy’s movement to 0 and inflicts –20 avoidance on them after the Witch initiates a battle, and you have a unit that can ruin any plans the enemy may have had. Toxic Brew’s trigger is based on a unit’s skill stat x 1.5%, which in most cases means a 20% chance of stopping a foe’s advance. The Witch also learns Shadowgift, which allows any class to use Dark Magic, and Witch’s Brew, which uses the luck stat to determine the percentage chance of finding a potion item after a battle’s first seven turns. Combine this with Galeforce, and you have a deadly individual.

I recommend making a character who’s normally a cleric into a witch. In my game, Sakura was my first witch. (She headed over to the dark side after getting one of the Witch’s Marks from the Gift from Anna free DLC.) As a level 60 witch, her magic stat maxed out at 42 and her resistance maxed out at 34. I chose to keep the Renewal, Counter, and Counter Magic skills on her, to compliment her new Warp and Toxic Brew abilities, so she can safely head out as an advance unit on the field. The respective counters allow her to retaliate if I choose to Warp her out onto the field alongside another advance unit, while Renewal will reliably restore 30% of her health as each turn begins.

With Fire Emblem Fates’ Witches’ Trial DLC released, that marks the end of the Map Pack 1 releases. Additional maps and scenarios have been released in Japan, but localization information has yet to be announced.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available on the Nintendo 3DS in North America and Japan. It will come to Europe on May 20, 2016.

Fire Emblem Fates’ The Changing Tide Helps Players Make Connections. May 19, 2016 . 1:30pm

Fire Emblem Fates’ The Changing Tide brings together more characters and makes some elements of the previous Heirs of Fate maps start making more sense.

7 comments Read >
WVW69jOHGkll4s918_thumb.jpg

Things are starting to come together with Fire Emblem Fates’ Map Pack 2 maps. The first two entries did a lot of setting the stage, with In Endless Dreams showing one version of Kana beginning to unit with some children from Hoshido and Realms Collide bringing another Kana together with children from Nohr. With The Changing Tide, the third map in a six map series, we finally get to see more allies coming together.

It’s happening right when one group needs it most. Fire Emblem Fates’ The Changing Tide begins with Shiro, Caeldori, Asugi, Midori, and Rhajat in trouble. The group is recovering after a fight. Which is all they’ve been doing since leaving their Deeprealms and seeing their parents cut down in front of them – fighting. Right after resolving to find their parents, they head into a rematch against their most recent foes.

Here’s where things get interesting! People who read last week’s spoiler-free overview for Realms Collide may recall Shiro, Caeldori, Asugi, Midori, and Rhajat were among the enemies Kana, Sophie, Dwyer, Forrest, Nina, and Ophelia faced. In this week’s map, Kana, Sophie, Dwyer, Forrest, Nina, and Ophelia are the among the opponents.

The point of The Changing Tide map is to defeat the two bosses, which are Kana and Forrest. As with each of the other Heirs of Fate installments, most of your team is at level 10 and will remain at level 10. The exception is Shiro, who is a level 1 Swordmaster with Ryoma’s Raijinto. Asugi is a level 10 Ninja with Steel and Flame Shurikens, Midori is a level 10 Apothecary with a Steel Yumi, Concoction, and Azura’s Salve. Rhajat is a level 10 Diviner with a Tiger Spirit and Horse Spirit. Caeldori is a level 10 Sky Knight with a Steel Naginata and Swordcatcher. The level 10 Kana, Sophie, Dwyer, Forrest, Nina, and Ophelia are accompanied by 3 Stoneborn enemies, 8 Faceless enemies, and one Maid at the outset. More enemies will spawn from the marsh tiles on subsequent turns.

Since The Changing Tide is set in a swamp, you want to be careful with your units. You don’t want someone taking damage at the start of a turn because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Especially since your group doesn’t have a healer and Dwyer is carrying the only item you can acquire, a Talisman.

I found it easiest to stick to the bottom of the map, dealing with the smaller number of generic enemies and heading to take care of Kana, Sophie, and Dwyer first, before heading north where Forrest, Ophelia, and Nina wait with their ranged attacks. Keep Midori safe, since she’s the closest thing you have to a healer with her potions. By the time you reach the pond in the center of the map, Kana, Sophie, and Dwyer will have left their positions to confront you. Kana is the biggest threat here, so take him out. From there, send Rhajat to lead a charge against Forrest, Ophelia, and Nina, with Caeldori following behind her. While Nina is a significant threat to the Sky Knight, Caeldori and Rhajat have the strongest resistance in the group, which will help them stand against their magic. If all goes well, you should be able to beat The Changing Tide in under ten turns.

The reward for completing Fire Emblem Fates’ The Changing Tide map is a Strengthtaker scroll. This can be applied to any unit and will give them +2 strength for every unit they defeat, up to a +10 bonus, for the rest of the battle. If you purchased the Vanguard Dawn DLC or own Map Pack 1, any male unit you made a Vanguard may have already learned this skill. Ike also learns this skill. I find it’s a helpful ability for someone who’s on the front lines or sent out as an advance unit. Ryoma and Xander both make good use of this ability, as can a child character like Shiro or Ignatius.

It really feels like The Changing Tide is where Fire Emblem Fates’ Heirs of Fate storyline comes into its own, especially if you played the previous two maps. You start to see things coming together and understand where the plot is going. Plus, it encourages you to pay more attention to who you do and don’t see in each battle. While the initial maps did a good job of setting things up, it’s The Changing Tide that brings things together and adds a little more mystery to the affair.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS in North America and Japan and will come to Europe on May 20, 2016. The Changing Tide is $1.99 on its own and part of the $7.99 Map Pack 2.

Lost In The Waves Gives Fire Emblem Fates’ Heirs Of Fate A Proper End. June 9, 2016 . 1:30pm

Lost in the Waves is the most challenging and one of the most intricate maps in the Fire Emblem Fates’ Heirs of Fate series. It has a multi-step boss fight.

9 comments Read >

Fire Emblem Fates’ Heirs of Fate has run its course. Lost in the Waves, the final map in the series, is immediately available. While I consider Endless Dawn to be the best map in terms of execution, with its shifting landscapes and waves of enemies and allies approaching the field, Lost in the Waves is equally intricate and the most challenging map in this storyline and ties up every loose end. It’s a more than competent close that helps players appreciate Fire Emblem Fates’ child characters, as well as understand a bit more about this installment’s history.

If you didn’t play Endless Dawn, Lost in the Waves will leave you lost at the outset. The crew of children are desperate to find the castle where their parents might be held, and no longer have a guide to help them reach it. After coming up with a plan inspired by advice a familiar, ghostly woman gave Hoshido and Nohr’s children in the first two chapters, the group comes up with a way to move forward.

Given that everything to do with Lost in the Waves’ map and its story are huge spoilers, I won’t be naming names for the units you’ll face. Only their levels and type. Players have a massive force to use in the battle. If Shigure or the Kanas die, you’ll lose the battle. The boss must be defeated to win. You have 22 units to use.

These are the units you have available.

  • Hoshido Noble Kana, level 15 with Omega Yato, Kodachi, Dragonstone, and a concoction
  • Falcon Knight Shigure, level 15 with Silver Naginata, Guard Naginata, Sun Festal, Moon Festal, and elixir
  • Nohr Noble Kana, level 15 with Omega Yato, Levin Sword, Dragonstone, and a concoction
  • Swordmaster Shiro, level 14 with Raijinto
  • Sniper Kiragi, level 14 with Fujin Yumi, Sidelong Yumi, and a concoction
  • Swordmaster Hisame, level 14 with Silver Katana, Dual Katana, Sunrise Katana, and Wakizashi
  • Nine-Tails Selkie, level 14, with Beaststone, Beastrune, Beaststone+, and a concoction
  • Wolfssegner Velouria, level 14, with Beaststone, Beastrune, Beaststone+, and a concoction
  • Wyvern Lord Percy, level 14 with Arthur’s Axe, Hand Axe, Pike-Ruin Club, and Silver Axe
  • Onmyoji Rhajat, level 14 with Tiger Spirit, Horse Spirit, Rabbit Spirit, Sun Festal, and Rescue
  • Master Ninja Asugi, level 14 with Silver Shuriken, Steel Shuriken, and Flame Shuriken
  • Priestess Mitama, level 14 with Iron Yumi, Sun Festal, Wane Festal, and Rescue
  • Hero Soliel, level 14 with Silver Sword, Killing Edge, Armorslayer, and a vulnerary
  • Butler Dwyer, level 14 with Iron Dagger, Mend, Physic, and Entrap
  • Adventurer Nina, level 14 with Steel Bow, Shining Bow, Mend, and a concoction
  • Paladin Sophie, level 14 with Silver Lance, Steel Sword, and a Javelin
  • Falcon Knight Caeldori, level 14 with a Silver Naginata, Sword Catcher, Sun Festal, and a concoction
  • Merchant Midori, level 14 with Silver Yumi, Harp Yumi, a concoction, and an elixir
  • General Ignatius, level 14 with a Silver Lance, Spear, Killer Lance, and a concoction
  • Sorcerer Ophelia, level 14 with Ragnarok, Lightning, Missiletainn, and a vulnerary
  • Strategist Forrest, level 14 with Byrnhildr, Fire, Mend, and Rescue
  • Paladin Siegbert, level 14 with Siegfried and a concoction

On the enemy’s side, there is an oversized enemy with one hand on either side of the map. The hands are the only part that can be attacked. There are 23 other enemies on the field when the battle begins. 13 of them are special opponents. 10 are standard Vallite opponents. On turns 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 more reinforcement units will appear at the south end of the map. Also, once the boss’ two arms are defeated, six special reinforcement units will appear.

My best advice here is to divide your army in half. Leave the two Kanas and Shigure where they are, and do an even split down the middle of the forces behind them. Each side of your group has a relatively even distribution of mages and healers. The goal is to take out the boss as quickly and efficiently as possible, and that’s a good means of accomplishing it. Though, it may be smart to organize the troops so the Hoshidan children are on the left and Nohrian kids on the right. There’ll be before-battle dialogue snippets when your units face specific enemies. (You’ll know them when you see them.) While this isn’t an especially difficult battle for the most part, it can take a while due to the volume of units available.

The real danger in this fight is the final boss. He’s exceptionally strong. Since your characters this time start out with C-level support ratings with other allies, you want to keep the Nohr and Hoshido kids with their retainers and friends. The attack and defense boosts will help them survive the boss’ counterattacks and attacks. Even with that support, though, his attacks can be one hit kills. Trying to use archers or mages won’t help, as the boss’ range is 1-2. Once the arms of the boss are destroyed, his head drops and Dragon Veins appear on the left and right sides of the map near Shigure and the Kanas. Using both creates a healing tile in front of the boss, for your allies, and removes the barriers keeping your forces from joining up with Shigure and the Kanas. Once the Dragon Veins are activated, send your strongest units to attack the boss. The head is stronger than the arms, but keeping friendly units paired up and alongside one another should help. Once it is defeated, the boss will move on to its final, most powerful form. This one has an increased range, as I saw it hitting allies within 1-3 spaces of it. Shiro is one of the best units, alongside Siegbert, to use. He’ll often dodge the boss’ attacks. Kiragi with Forrest works well too.

The reward for completing Lost in the Waves is a skill that can only be acquired from this add-on. Point Blank is an ability for archers. When equipped, any archer can attack enemies at 1 range, instead of only at 2 range. Previously, you needed a weapon like a Mini Bow, Sidelong Yumi, or Shining Bow to have that kind of range with an archer. Since this is such a helpful skill, I recommend playing through Lost in the Waves at least two, maybe three times. It’s fantastic for Takumi and Kiragi, as well as characters like Niles and Nina.

All told, it’s a satisfying map more for the way the Heirs of Fate story ends, rather than the execution of this final battle. This was an interesting storyline that played with the idea of parallel dimensions and Deep Realms seen in the primary Fire Emblem Fates story, while also allowing a little more insight into the boss and his history. I think it also made the child characters feel a little more valuable, since you could see how they interacted and were forced to use them for every fight. Lost in the Waves is an interesting adventure, as was the whole Heirs of Fate tale.

Fire Emblem Fates is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS. The entire Heirs of Fate DLC storyline is available for $7.99. Lost in Waves on its own is $1.99.

We first heard back in 2015 that Fire Emblem Fates was getting a manga from its own character designer Yusuke Kozaki and writer Shin Kibayashi, but it looks like it won’t be happening anytime soon. [Thanks, Serenes Forest.]

Yusuke Kozaki, who was the character designer from Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates, shared the following message on his Twitter account:

“Regarding the Fire Emblem manga, due to various circumstances, right now the plans have essentially been suspended. Everyone who was looking forward to it, we are deeply sorry. Personally speaking, I would like to draw FE as a manga one way or another.”
When the manga was announced in July 2015, the plan was to have artist Kozaki team up with Shin Kibayashi, the story director for Fire Emblem Fates for a new manga that was expected to release sometime around the end of 2015. We haven’t heard much about it since then, but after reading Kozaki’s tweet, it looks like it’ll be a while until we finally get to check out the manga, that is if it ever ends up happening.

A special Fire Emblem edition Nintendo Direct presentation takes place this week, and some folks found an interesting source code showing “Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation for Nintendo Switch.” [Thanks, NeoGAF, via NintendoEverything.]

The information comes from NeoGAF-user Mr. Pointy, who found that Fire Emblem Warriors’ page on Nintendo’s official website contains a source code showing “Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation for Nintendo Switch” as shown in the above screencap that points at a hidden image or link for the possible port or updated version.

While this doesn’t confirm that Fire Emblem Fates is headed to Nintendo Switch, it’d certainly be pretty interesting and welcomed by many along with Fire Emblem Warriors. In any case, we’ll learn whether it’s true or someone in the website department for Nintendo just made a little mistake that they had forgotten to clean up.

Fire Emblem’s Nintendo Direct will take place on January 18, 2017 at 2:00pm PT.
