Efron to Star in Footloose Remake
Source: Variety July 11, 2007

Variety reports that Paramount is developing a musical remake of the 1984 film Footloose and will develop it for "High School Musical" star Zac Efron and director Kenny Ortega. Dylan Sellers will produce.

Ortega is in talks to helm and choreograph, and Efron is in talks to play Ren McCormack, the rebellious newcomer (originally played by Kevin Bacon) in a town where dancing has been banned.

The original was directed by Herb Ross and written by Dean Pitchford.

The trade says the plan is to turn the project into a full-blown musical. Footloose was already turned into a Broadway musical.

Efron makes his feature debut in Hairspray, which New Line releases on Friday, July 20.

Was just reading this AICN. What a disgraceful idea this is a tradegy

UGH!!! Worst idea EVER. :cmad:

They made a "full-blown musical" of Footloose on Broadway a few years ago, and it was worst musical I've ever seen. It completed destroyed every important part of the movie.

Just leave the original alone. It was fine the way it is.

God DAMN it!!!

From now on, every time Hollywood GL's a remake, I'm punching a grannie! :cmad:

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

no more remakes!
no more movies
no more tv shows
NO MORE ****ING REMAKES!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe this!! You can't beat Kevin Bacon with that hairdo! LOL
This shows how shameful Hollywood is, I mean they remade Hairspray for christs sake!! The original Hairspray was horrible enough, just like all of Waters' movies.

Everybody cut.

Everybody cut.

Wow...never thought I'd see the day.

this is why i wish there really was a godzilla. then he/she/it could be lured to the california coast and allowed to trample hollywood. perhaps we would get really lucky and paris hilton would be to drunk to get out of the way and splat!
in any event with hollywood's remake yes men gone the world would be a safer place for movie fans.

So I am guessing this is gonna be hip hop themed?

Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll be a direct to DVD release.

Hollywood really needs to sit down and think. Just think of some new ideas.

Hollywood is thinking of new ideas...new ideas on what to remake :o

I think they have a bunch of classic movie titles on a wall, they take a dart, spin around 3 times, and then throw it. That is how it is done in Hollywood my friends.

That seems to be the long and short of it.

Yeah that too.

why Hollywood why. Was the world really calling out for a footloose remake.

OK, now I'm going to ask..for the guys only. Was Footloose really that important to you growing up that a remake is bugging you? Or is it just jumping on the "i hate remakes" bandwagon? Because honestly...the movie was more for the chicks than anyone. It's classic 80's pop culture, but still....never really been a big thing with me.

The idea of Footloose, as a straightforward film, is actually so laughable when you REALLY think about it, doing it as a musical probably makes it more dignified.

so how long until they start remaking really bad movies. i don't mean the half asses bad movies we have been seeing. but i mean really bad, like hard to watch, can't believe it was made in the first place bad, can't even be made into a MST3K bad.

Having a little sister, Footloose does have a spot in my memory as a toture device, Footloose and Grease. Songs from either movie are like nails on a chalkboard. I'd rather not see either movie remade to save future generations of boys the same torture I endured from sisters who like crappy movies like this.
