I have mostly been a DC fan, although I collect Daredevil & Spidey like CRAZY.

For somebody whose never read X-men, where would you recommend I start?

what tpb's should I collect (because I don't collect single issues). What are essential?

advice and reccommendations are appreciated...

Id suggest you read the current stuff first. See what you like and then come back with questions on where to go bc theres ALOT out there. Out of the 3 core books, probably the best newbie-friendly title would be Uncanny X-men. Id start there. #500 is a good jumping on point

If you want some good TPB's Id reccomend, From The Ashes, Inferno and Mutant Massacre. All great stories from the 80s

Since the x-men moved to San Francisco, its basically a new start for them, and a good place to start for new readers (including myself). Astonishing X-men is a good place to start too. And thats a pretty new series so you only have to get 4 tpb's.

While Grant Morrison's New X-Men run may not be the best place to start for newbies - as the story and the art polarized fans - I believe this is one of the all-time best, complete X-Men stories ever told to date.

I'd say for the current status quo of the X-Men though, read all of Whedon's run of Astonishing X-Men, 1-24 and the Giant Size 1. These are available in hardcovers and softcovers, and I wouldn't be surprised if they soon released an Omnibus that collects every episode.

Other good places to read are the classic crossovers and events that are currently in trade circulation. Inferno, Fall of the Mutants, Operation Zero Tolerance (my all-time favorite), The Phoenix + Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, Phalanax Covenant, and Messiah Complex (the most recent, and quite nice). For now, I'd stay away from Alternate-stuff like House of M or Age of Apocalypse, as well as staying away from Onslaught, which is way to convoluted until you're better acquainted.

Phoenix and Dark Phoenix Sagas are a must have!

But i agree if you want the more recent stuff...go with Astonishing or Messiah Complex...

Astonishing hardcover if you can find it, by Joss Whedon. I think it collects #1-12, and it's the first X-Men I read, and I found it easy to follow. I had already 'met' some of the characters through Deadpool, Punisher, and of course the movies and TV show back in the day, but it didn't feel vague for newbies or anything.

I think I'll check out the Joss Whedon #1-12 first (Astonishing X-men Vol. 1)

The Dark Pheonix Saga, God Loves; Man Kills, and From the ashes.

All three are fantastic and show Claremont at his best.

If you were really interested in reading the X-men and don't wanna spend big bucks, pick up the 40 Years of X-men DVDRom. It has almost 500 issues on it from Uncanny #1 to #461 or so, plus a bunch of annuals. It only costs about $40 and is a legal, Marvel sanctioned disc. Plenty of details here, just scroll down a bit:http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=234588

I can vouch for the quality of the scans, it's well worth the money.
