For the relationship of Lex and Clark, would you want a Smallville movie?

Being currently in the midst of a Smallville marathon, I have been thinking about the relationship between Lex and Clark and the full development of it, ie Lex to turn to the "dark side" and Clark to take up the mantle of the Boy Scout. Obviously, in the Superman films of old, and new, there is no connection between the past of Clark and Lex.

The point I am getting at is, after now at the start of the 7th Season, we have seen 7 years of development in the relationship of Lex and Clark. From good friends to strained relationships to almost-enemies and back again. After all those years and ups and downs, don't you feel the need for the full exploration of the relationship to superhero and supervillain statuts? I think it could be a great situation where Lex, as the ego maniacal supervillain, and having fought Superman for years, finds out that the Big Blue is Clark. I think it would make for some really emotional stuff, especially on Lex's part to see how he handles it and if he has any remorse.

I guess this is all hypothetical as it is highly unlikely to ever happen, be it in Smallville or on the big screen. Anyways, just wondered everyone's thoughts on it.

I agree with you. A while ago on the comics President Lex used his resources to discouver that Clark was Superman so that may be the way to go... Ironically Gough and Millar said their Superman movie would be with President Lex so...

Sounds like a cool idea. What was the end result in the comics as I tend not to get many Blue Boy books, unless they involve the Bat. The thing that would make it cooler if done based upon Smallville mythology is that you have the whole previous relationship of Lex and Clark in their youth.

Well, Goughlar has been setting up President Lex for a damned long time. From his 'nightmares' of the oval office + nukes, to his then future vision in Hourglass... Then we've got his bid for senate, which he claimed was just a stop on his way to presidency. They've definitely made it a point that their version of Lex Luthor is looking to gain that seat of power.

I like this version much better than the goofy criminal mastermind version.

Never. Say. Never.

Yeah I forget about the never say never outlook when I dismissed rumours of the JL popping up in Smallville. The only thing that I am totally ruling out is le Bat... surely that is one case where you can say never.

Hopefully we can get the Lex and Clark dynamic shown in their fully formed states and in tights one day.

Well if I remember correctly, he used satellites to discouver his identity but kept it to himself (something that was always discussed in this forum as something SV's Lex would do out of pride and maybe even loyalty to their former friendship. Or maybe - as I think it was in these comics - just because he wanted to beat Superman by his own merit.). The only person he revealed it to if I'm not mistaken (and ironically enough) was his vice-president and Clark's best friend in SV: Pete Ross.
I believe Hulk (or someone from our community) has mentioned that that continuity has been erased though and Lex no longer knows his identity. I'm not sure...
What I do know is that would make for great drama especially in scenes like the ones depicted in Birthright in which we see them face to face and while Clark tries to be civil with Lex, Lex makes it a point to clarify he has never been in Smallville nor was he ever friends with Clark. That was great storytelling in my opinion and the way to go.

Is there a publication out there that has the Best of Superman Comics incorporated into one book? I think I might find it an interesting read.

^agreed i would find that very useful

on topic of the thread though, i would be okay with lex finally knowing he is super and i think it would be a great movie situation worthy of feature length, even if tv-based or direct to dvd. what i love is that even if lex knows as someone mentioned he is tactical and wants to win by his own merit, he isnt venom or green goblin who immediately goes after his foes attachments.......it could work well actually

Yeah, Lex is all about the ego so he'd definitely be out to keep it his own little secret 1) so that nobody else can beat him to the punch, and 2) so that he can win by some forms of tactical merit on his part.

As in regards to the actors or the actual character portrayals? Character wise, my whole point is to see this big turn of events, the tights and supervillainy, happen and the reaction to it based on the characterisations shown of these 2 in their younger days and that relationship that exists. So character wise, I'm all for Smallville's Lex AND Clark.

As for actor wise, I'm pretty happy with both Rosenbaum and Welling. If anything, I'm more intrigued for Welling than I am for Rosenbaum in a film of this nature purely for the fact of seeing him don the tights and how he'd adapt to the role of the fully fledged Boy Scout. Whereas with Lex, while I am a big fan of the Smallville characterisation and of Rosenbaum, we have seen the seeds of the dark side for a while and kinda know what to expect.
