FOX's The Exorcist

We didn't actually see him dying, it'll be an interesting next episode that's for sure.

I have to say, I loved the metaness of "Let's give the people what they want" line just as she's about to do the head twist. And that you really couldn't come back from that in real life.

Saw the twist coming (heh) once they started their conversation. Still, didn't quite expect Mr. Howdy to be so murderous.

And I do hope Vatican Commando is okay. I like him. Though I am still a bit curious about just what possessed the police chief. Mr. Howdy seems to get all the worship of the demons.

I hope the pope shows up with crucifix nunchucks

I just started watching this show online and am admiring how well done it is!

Something confused me, though, and I don't think I have seen it mentioned here -- were certain scenes in the second episode meant to be flashbacks? - because there was a big difference in the father's (Alan Ruck) mental condition from what we saw in the pilot.

When he was playing that game of Jenga with his daughters in the 2nd ep he was reacting quickly and normally and joking and mentioning his career . . . while in the first episode he couldn't even put his own hat on or remember that he was refurbishing a boat! They mentioned a brain injury.

I couldn't reconcile the difference in performances - did the writers change direction with his character?

They also really improved the opening titles from what we saw in the pilot! (and I liked the misdirection in the pilot that first led us to believe that the older sister - the one who wouldn't leave her bedroom - was the one that was possessed! ha!)

I think in the pilot, he was intended to have Alzheimer's. Once they really started putting the show together, I think they wanted something that would tie in with [blackout]the demon attacking Regan's whole family[/blackout], so they changed it to a brain injury.

Yes, possibly. But he sure didn't seem to have any brain injury impairment when he was kibitzing with his daughters in the living room -- the healing power of Jenga??

How far are you, because comes and goes in the episodes following that.

His problems directly affect what happens on the train later. There's also moments later where he has problems with words.

That said, there's at least one or two episodes where he shows no symptoms at all. And there is the weird fact that after the pilot where they sort of baby him, we see him come and go by himself, which I'd think would be a huge gamble.

That said, the show is good enough for me to overlook this issue. It's come into play when I needed to, and otherwise hasn't been extremely relevant.

Ah ha! I'm only two episodes in, so I wasn't getting the full picture. Thanks for addressing the 'discrepancies'.

As with you, it really hasn't affected how much I've enjoyed the story so far!

You should see his condition in the latest episode, his daughter even mentions that he seems to be getting better. Maybe there's another twist coming.

I appreciate your clarifications . . . but I just watched that episode with the ugly violence on the train (and the weird kissing scene with 'the salesman'), and I couldn't see how the father's blackout directly affected what happened.

Do you mean Casey's 'rampage' was only possible because her father couldn't watch it? Maybe I'm missing what you are trying to say.

I know I'm too hung up on the wild swings in the father's capacities - I am hoping it's intended to be that way and not just 'forgetful' script writing.

I like all the little things . . . like after Father Marcus was dissed by those two guys from the hood outside the house where the massacre took place, he showed up a few scenes later munching on the corn on the cob that one of the 'hood guys was eating! :yay:

Back tonight, y'all. Last two episodes of the season.

This show has gotten so good. I hope FOX doesn't cancel it though I feel like they would.

I would think that he wouldn't have the power to do something like that in the church.

It would be cool (if this went on) if they connected it to Rosemarys baby (random I know)

Regardless of how much I love the show, I do think it's kind of hilarious how organized the demons are in their planning and how subtle they're being this time around, when in the original it was all "Spider-walk down the stairs and vomit blood! Spin your head around! Swear like a sailor! Scare the s*** out of her mom!"

My point of it affecting what happened was it seemed a more opportune time for the demon to present itself. Casey was in trouble and her father was passed out and unable to help. His condition might not have been a direct reason, but it had a point from my view of things.

Me too. It morphed into something completely different. It's not bad though, I find it things changing with the times. Demons have always been about discourse and disrespect for the church, but where in older times it was various small possessions, now they have the ability to stage something like this. I kind of like that this portrays the demons as both a depraved sort and yet something that would still stand on par as an opppsote to an angel. I also love how Pazuzu just walked into a major plan and took over.

Finale tonight!

I missed it, but I'm catching it on Hulu tomorrow, was it good??

Decent finale. I'm glad it didn't end on a cliffhanger. I mean there was a little tease for future seasons, but nothing big. Everyone got happy endings. Any ideas if this might get picked up for season 2?

Far from a slam dunk for renewal, but I feel like it pulls in relatively comparable numbers with other lower-ranking shows on the network. Shows that are on better nights and get more promo to boot. I don't know. We'll see. You never know with FOX, but they could always say "Well we do need something on Fridays at 9, so... sure".

I'm sort of split on whether or not I want one, honestly. I feel like they wrapped up Angela/Regan's story and wouldn't go back down that road again, if given a second season. And granted, I was already in before knowing the full extent of the connection to the film, but that reveal took the show to the next level for me. It won't feel the same if it's Tomas, Marcus and a bunch of newbies.

I certainly hope it gets renewed, I enjoyed the whole season very much. :)

I wouldn't mind if next season they concentrate on Father Thomas and Marcus and the Exorcist training. They could travel and there's always the possibility of Satan himself showing up.

I would love to see Tomas and Marcus travelling around exorcising Demons with Bennett popping up every now and again.

I don't know if I'd say no cliffhanger, that scene at the end with the two possessed in the limo hunted there was something more than taking out the Pope.

I do want to see more, but I'm sort of left agreeing with Sawyer here, I think it ended perfectly for Reagan and family, and they should be left alone. That begs the question though of where to go from there though, and with less film connections, it might actually drag it down a bit.

I, as a huge fan of Exorcist III, wouldn't mind seeing them delve into that storyline a bit. You could still bring back Pazuzu in another body if so wished, and bring up his revenge on Father Karras, who was trapped inside his basically dead body while Pazuzu forced the soul of a dead serial killer inside it who could freely move into others and commit his murders again. I feel like they could have other possibilities because it could serve as interesting distraction while whatever is going on behind the scenes with the demon possessed socialites moves forward.

I was really looking forward to this, just out of love for the original film and the fact that I really like Hannah Kasulka (saw her in an indie sci-fi film called Plus 1 a few years ago and have watched the few "genre" related projects she's been in since...that girl has some amazing eyes). I avoided all spoilers and waited until I had a chance to binge the entire season.

I really enjoyed the main story. Again...I'm a fan of Kasulka, so it was really good to see her finally given a chance to be a star. The effects were all done well enough, though it wasn't much that we haven't seen a million times now. I actually am SICK of possession and haunted house movies, but I thought that this was done really well. I also liked the excommunicated priest (far more than I liked the "main star" priest actually).

What I didn't care for was the other side stories. The married woman that the priest was cheating with...I didn't care at all about her story and would have been fine with them just leaving that entire subplot out. I didn't even really care about the Pope storyline or any of the stuff that came with it (organ harvesting etc). So, for me...the series could have been cut down by a few episodes and ended with Casey's story.

Some stuff outright bothered me. The fact that Casey was not arrested after practically ripping a guy's jaw off in front of a bunch of people...and the cops KNEW that she did it...was too much to accept. And then other people who appeared possessed were ignored because a pretty white girl was possessed...and we were supposed to support that decision because this family were the stars of the show. I get that a high ranking police official was "in on it" but I sympathized with the victims families who didnt get much screen time.

Also, I feel like the characters were not consistent. There seemed to be a shift in how the dad and both daughters were treated after the first episode or so. It was a bit jarring and I never quite forgave the show for it. Also...what was the point of having that dying man in the house that the little boy stumbled across??? Was that set-up for a subplot that got dropped?

Initially, I liked the idea of an ongoing anthology series that used the Exorcist title. But with the reveal that took place halfway through this season, I want it to be done. Let this family rest. I'm a believer in telling stories with a beginning, middle and end. I prefer movies over tv shows because tv series just keep going and going for as long as the ratings allow them to (even if the story jumped the shark).

I definitely enjoyed it though.
