Frank Miller to Helm The Spirit

Comic book artist Frank Miller will adapt and direct The Spirit, based on comic legend Will Eisner's classic strip, for Odd Lot Entertainment and Batfilm Productions, reports Variety.

Miller made his helming debut co-directing Sin City -- adapted from his graphic novel -- with Robert Rodriguez.

The Spirit, which debuted in 1940, tells the story of a masked detective who is believed to be dead. Using a mausoleum as his home base, Eisner's character fights crime in the dark shadows of Central City, using cunning and ingenious forms of punishment.

DC Comics has reprinted much of the comic series -- Eisner's best-known work -- in hardcover form.

Odd Lot bought rights to The Spirit from Eisner, who passed away last year, in 2004. The producers are Del Prete, Pritzker, and Batfilm's Michael Uslan (Batman Begins).

"I intend to be extremely faithful to the heart and soul of the material, but it won't be nostalgic. It will be much scarier than people expect," said Miller.

Miller said he's putting together a treatment that consists in large part of panels from the "Spirit" strip. Shooting is expected to start in late spring.

Batfilm co-founder Benjamin Melniker is executive producing. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's F.J. DeSanto will co-produce.

I am kind of excited of Miller being director. I think he could add some good touches to The Spirit, but I don't want the film to become something lwhere it has that Sin City look and feel.
I kind of want to see of how he goes with the film, before I say yes or no.

I have no knowledge about this character at all but from that little info I think im gonna love it. If its anything liek Batman Begins its gotta be good and yes Frank Miller is know for Sin City but you gotta remember he also done Batman Year One and Daredevil Born again. He knows how to re invent a character without ruining anything, might even make them better.

dunno how I feel about this... Sin City, the movie, was really Rodriguez's doing. and Miller hasn't really given us anything great in years.

The only part that I'm questioning is his directorial role on the film. Because, might be wrong- the only time he's directed before was when he co-directed with Rodriguez on Sin City which is different than solo directing.

this is pretty cool. The Spirit is right up Frank's alley. Crime-drama noir with a superhero twist....or something like that. But i think this is gonna be pretty sweet.

although, i thought Jeph Loeb was writing the script? Becuase that would have kicked even more ass. Frank Miller directing a Jeph Loeb script about Will Eisner's The Spirit. It couldnt possibly have gotten more badass than that.

I'm not quite sure how to think about this yet. Who knows? Maybe Miller could be this great director just waiting to jump out. It's definitely interesting though.

I would love to see a good adaptation of "The Spirit"....I first read him over 40 years ago....and love the characters. The TV movie made in the late70's had it's cute moments....but it was quite a disappointment. I like Frank Miller's comic work....but not so sure about his directing abilities. We'll have to wait and see what else info comes out on this.

It was announced that he'd be getting a new ongoing series. Written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke. DC is also publishing a one-shot crossover called Batman/The Spirit. Which is coming out before the series debuts.
