I am posting this question in the community forum since it the the forum with the most people on it at once. I have a Westell DSL modem that is connected to my pc via the USB cable. I just recently got XBox Live which requires an ethernet cable. Since neither the USB nor the ethernet can be on at the same time, I was wondering if there was a way that I can switch everything over from USB to ethernet?

The reason I ask is because in order for me to log into Live I have to shut off my dsl, unplug the USB cable, then cut the modem and the pc back on. And now I can't even access XBox Live after completing these steps. So please, can I get a straightforward answer that doesn't require me getting a router because I can't get that thing right now since I just paid for an ethernet cable that was over $20 and I have to pay for senior supplies.

This is the first time I've ever heard of dsl through USB. Does your computer not support ethernet hookup? Most do...

i'm thinking you could just plug the xbox into the modem but it doesn't seem like that'll work by the way you sort of describe it. Why exactly is the connection not working?

You see, if I were to take out the USB plug then I won't be able to connect to the internet. My dsl installation wizard required me to use the USB cable in order to connect to the internet. My dsl came with an ethernet jack and I am able to use it as I connected to Live twice. The best way I can describe it is that I have a gateway modem where I can hook up both usb and ethernet but they both cannot be on at the same time. This was made clear on the customer support page on xbox.com.

So what I want to know is how do I switch from USB to ethernet. I want my modem to run entirely through the ethernet instead of the USB because the ethernet is a requirement for connecting to Live. And since my USB automatically comes on when I start my computer, the only way I can connect to Live is if I shut down my modem, pull out the USB cord and restart my computer so that the ethernet power switch come on.

Everytime I ran the connection test it would say "failed" beside the XBox Live tab whereas everything before was "connected"

Wrong forum

If you bothered to read the very first sentence of my topic post then you would know that I had full knowledge of what forum I posted in. And that I post here because this is the most frequently visited forum on this site.

your best bet is to get a router that way you can have them both plugged in at the same time.

maybe I read wrong, but I am pretty sure its impossible to be connected to the internet via USB

You sure its a USB cable?
anyways, just plug the ethernet cable into the back of the modem, and the other end into the back of the computer
It should look like an oversized phone jack

Do people still use non wireless systems? How strange!

As wonky as it sounds, there are some dsl/cable modems that can be connected to a system via USB.

When I finally made the plunge from dial up to DSL, my old computer did not have an Ethernet card, so I had to hook up my DSL modem through my USB port. It does work and if I remember correctly took some configuration.

That is incorrect, there are USB ethernet connections, so its possible to connect to a network with a USB device

Using USB versus an Enternet connection does work.
Granted I havent really had much experience with them, from my understanding, they are not as reliable...Anyone have more info? I would like to know more on how reliable they are nowadays...

They're kind of sucky, Malice. Prone to interrupted communications and dropped signals. If ethernet is at all an option in any way, even if you have to add a PCI expansion card of some sort, I highly recommend it.

my high-speed DSL modem has a USB port. i've never used it, since i'm pretty sure the data rate for USB is a hell of a lot slower than ethernet.

like others have said, i would recommend getting an ethernet card for your computer if it doesn't already have one, and getting a router to plug both in at the same time.

of course, wireless is even better

I agree. Cable is faster and much better in the long run. It runs through (duh) the cable, so if you already have the provider, all they have to do is come and hook it up. No having to deal with putting in totally new lines, etc.

my high speed DSL just works through my phone line, which is so much better than cable here because there are more outlets, and it's a billion times more reliable. i mean, how often does your phone line go out?

cable is much slower than DSL because of the router setup. or that's how it is here in canadaland anyway.

My sister in law had Adelphia cable internet and our Verizon DSL blew her speed away. Besides if you really want fast broadband get Verizon FIOS. Now that's fast.
