Frustration with WB.

The main problem is that WB always demands input into the CBFs as opposed to letting DC deal with it on their own....I'm assuming most studio execs have never picked up a comic book...

And while they've done good job on movies like V for Vandetta and now Watchmen, they are really no substitute for DC superheroes.

Agreed, I've had this debate with my younger brother a few times. How? I tell him that WB could be making a movie of the Flash but instead they made V for Vendetta. He is a guy who is into reading lots of books, but not superhero comics like I enjoy, except for some graphic novels (V for V is probably his favorite). When I argue with him about it, his response is: "shut up, V for V is a great political story. The Flash is just a lame guy who runs fast." Well I agree with him about V for V, but if it wasn't a Vertigo graphic novel, it wouldn't have much to do with the Flash since its so different. But it sort of pisses me off all the DC material, GNs like V for V and Watchmen that aren't superhero-related get to be adapted to the screen and WW, Flash and GL don't.

^^ That may be true but the fact I think dude is trying to get across is Vertigo Comics is completely different from DC. Vertigo is an imprint of DC but are from two different worlds. WW, GL, Flash, etc etc have been here long before V for V and Watchmen. Not hating on V for V the movie (it was great) but it was made while putting other DC franchises on the back burner (WW, GL, Flash etc)

"Although many of the initial Vertigo publications were set in the DC Universe, following the establishment of the imprint they showed progressively less continuity with regular DC-branded series. Appearances in DC series by characters appearing in Vertigo series were very uncommon:"

exactly my point...but you have people making whacked out statements like DC should pubicly say "Screw WB", and blaming DC for not doing what marvels doing.....

Its ok to vent frustration at WB...though i somewhat disagree... after 04', they've tried giving fanboys what they want, imo. Superman Returns was only greenlit because WB wanted a classic style superman ala the much beloved donner franchise, in response to the backlash of abrhams/ratner/mcg's supes.
V for Vendetta was faithful to the source material, and of course, we have nolans batman franchise. WB backed off of jack blacks GL when they saw the backlash, and we're getting a faithful watchmen movie. the only misstep has been Justice League, and even then, there were smart enough not to make it in the end

My problem with them is that they're followers when it comes to comic films, not the trendsetters they were in the 70's and 80's. BB is a response to Spider-Man, though it did start to reboot craze, and if we see a second tier character from dc on screen, you can bet its because of Iron man
I have to agree with this statement after Superman fans heard what Abrhams and Ratner and McG had planned for Superman. Most of the fans I saw were screaming for either they continue off of the Donner Universe or that they end Smallville and adapt Smallville onto the big screen (keep in mind this was but during the 3rd season of SV). It just so happens the WB went with the Donner Universe; and now judging by the rumors the WB is listening to the Superman fans once again. Because rumors have it although Superman: Man of Steel will be a sequel to Superman Returns it will have more action, settle the whole Lois Richard Jason, Superman thing, and start to conform to the post crisis era instead of the pre crisis era. Please in the recent interviews Green Lantern is shaping up to be a very good comic movie as well. What I am hoping for though is the WB takes a hint from Marvel and gives us an origin JL movie with the first coming together and at the same time you can make it a starting point for the much troubled Wonder Woman. I feel if they can get GL, Flash and a Superman/Batman movie (which I think could almost be a prequel to JL) off the ground you can use JL to introduce Wonder Woman and use Superman: Man Of Steel, Green Lantern and Flash to introduce J’onn J’onzz meeting with each member at the end of there movie to talk to them about the JL. I think the WB is on the right path now I just think they need to work harder on getting the other heroes off the ground.

Using JL as a starting point for other series is limiting, if you're doing an origin story you limit your creative flexibility if you have to conform with the type of characters and laws set in a JL film, that's the problem with spinoffs and prequels, it's restricting, should JL ever get made, it should remain a different continuity to all series.

You don't need an origin with Wonder Woman. Look at the JL cartoon for example it worked pretty well and they didn't have an origin for her or The Flash really (in S: TAS). But that aside I think you can get by if you do like who Timm did with WW on JL for her origin.

I do not agree with Watchmen being a single 2 hour film....it should be a miniseries on cable or something.....so I will not be going to see it....

Sure, let's talk about it after they release the first trailer.
BTW, the movie will be 3 hour long with supplemental material released simultaneously on DVD.

There is nothing to talk about....I feel its being done wrongly and I won't bother with it

It's my personal opinion....I'm not getting on a soapbox like the Transformer/anti-Bay crybabies and trying to rally a protest about it....I'm just saying I don't agree with how its being done and I won't go see it....

It's my personal opinion that that opinion is dumb then. There's noway in hell they were gonna do what you wanted them to do. It's the WB. If somebody else hasn't already done it successfully, they for damn sure aren't gonna take the chance on something new like that. A 3hr movie is the best you could really hope for. And besides, the story could fit in a 3hr movie. Once you take out stuff like the pirate tale, and those excerpts from what's his names book. 3 hours is plenty of time. Maybe even too much time.

I think thats' a little heady of you to call someone elses' opinion 'dumb'.....disagreeing with an opinion is fine, but calling it dumb smacks of immaturity....

^^^Hopefully WB doesn't try to 'input' their own ideas into the film

Pfft, you may as well decide to not see it right now.

I apply a higher standard to 'Watchmen' than I do to other CBF's....It has earned a place in literature as being a highly regarded story and to butcher that really bothers me....

What have they butchered about WATCHMEN, exactly?

There are much longer and more complicated works of literature that have been successfully adapted into 2 or 3 hours. The idea that length = quality adaptation has been disproven numerous times.

WATCHMEN is a masterpiece, but the idea that you need 12 hours, i.e. WATCHMEN should be a 12 part series on HBO, to tell WATCHMEN completely is unsupported by the actual material. It's not WAR AND PEACE or DOCTOR ZHIVAGO or THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO or BLEAK HOUSE or any of a number or sprawling epics, but a big but focussed mystery/thriller/drama/deconstruction of superheroes. With trimming the pirate story and Under the Hood supplements, you probably can fit everything else in three hours.

Heck, maybe we should wait until it actually comes out to judge just how complete an adaptation it actually is.

Hell, it only takes place over the course of like a few weeks not counting flashbacks. I think 3hrs might be too much.

Agreed. Just because it takes some a month to read WATCHMEN doesn't make that the reality of the WATCHMEN experience. It can easily be read/experienced in three hours, even with flashbacks, etc. Three hours is more than enough time.

i understand where you're coming but wait to see what happens. it's just too ignorant to see "I'm not seeing...period." It doesn't hurt to see it, really. If you don't like it when the credits roll, then that's that. And then you move on.
