I'm trying to hold out hope. I'm not a Sommers fan by any means. The only movie of his I like is Deep Rising, which is cheesy fun.
Yeah, this doesn't look like GI Joe from when I was a kid. But I'm willing to give it a chance. I'm not sure if it has as much a chance at the box office as Transformers did. TF was showing something most people hadn't seen in live action yet: big robots. GI Joe doesn't have that uniqueness, in regards to basic elements.
I also don't think they're adverstising this properly. It should be centering on the characters. How about telling us the character name and giving us a snippet of each of those iconic characters? For instance, go throw the Joe roll call. Duke...show us a Duke moment or two. Snake-Eyes....show us a SE moment or two. Scarlett....etc etc. Instead, it's just semi-random action. They need to make people connect the images to the established brand which the trailers haven't done.
It could go either way though. The TF2 trailer hasn't gotten very good reaction at the theaters I've been to. It was actually hissed at one screening. After this year's terrible Wolverine and Terminator movies , GI Joe actually might not be the worst movie of the summer.
