Fullmetal Alchemist live action (2017)

OK this seems like the opposite of what should happen. The whole idea is that the FMA world is basically an alternate universe version of early 20th Century Germany. The military dictator is called "Fuhrer," the names are all mostly European (and German in particular), the aesthetic, clothing, tech, etc as well, and so on.

Frankly, this is one of the few adaptations where having a lot of Western actors would not only be ok, it'd be appropriate.

All Japanese??

From what I've read, this is more of a Japanese production than a WB/Hollywood production. It isn't likely to have a wide worldwide release. Think of the Attack on Titan movies.

Of course, the Japanese cast is even weirder, because I believe they will be filming in Italy.

And poor Josh Hutcherson. Probably would've loved the role. Wouldn't have to wear the platforms anymore.

I think people said the same thing about the Attack on Titan movie.

Well, being Asian among Europeans is a plot point for one of the characters. But, I think that was the least of the issues the movies had with not being accurate.

I think if there were a lot of white actors in Japan who could speak fluent Japanese they'd be in demand for roles like this.

No matter what they do, Hollywood is going to get **** all over by fanboys for miscasting anything anime. Not that they don't deserve it frequently but in a lot of cases people just assume right off the start the casting is wrong no matter what the franchise.

GITS has white people. It's racist and wrong. Casting a Japanese actress is booed because it's not enough. Even if they gave her the Major's role and switched Scarlett to hers you all would still ***** over it.

FMA does Japanese people. It's miscasting and should be all white people.

Make up your minds on your outage. :funny:

It's Japan that's making the movie, so it's not really the same thing as the American adaption of Ghost in The Shell. When Japan made the Attack on Titan movie they cast all Japanese actors even though the characters in the series have a mix of German and Japanese names.

It is the same thing. It never made sense to complain about an American adaptation being American. With the biggest female film star in the world.

The sad thing about the Japanese film industry is that it's doing so well. Along with their video game industry. Heck, their birthrates are so low so they're not doing well with their population..industry.

Going to back to movies, the Japanese are now adapting mangas/animes but they just don't have the budget. And it shows. And sometimes, they try to hard to replicate the American style, and it often fails.

So I'm going to support this Fullmetal adaption, but I don't have high hopes for it. Their live action anime success rate is as good as the amount of QUALITY American video game adaptations.

I think what people were complaining about was a white actress playing a character named Motoko Kusanagi. The Attack on Titan movie didn't have a diverse cast and I don't see why people would expect this movie to.

Have we had her name confirmed? So far they have only called her the Major.

And come on, look at the name of FMA characters. Do those sound Japanese to you? :funny:

Her name hasn't been confirmed.

It's a much more complicated topic than what both sides are trying to make it out to be. There are many truths.

For example, I'm Asian-American and I didn't mind The Departed at all. That was a smart call.

I think here, with Ghost in the Shell, its the idea of having it both ways which is sorta bad. So the LEADS are white Americans, while the background characters are possibly Asian (until recently). And they're shooting the film around Asia, including Shanghai.

But aren't they taking the FMA cast, who are heavily Asian, and filming them in Italy?

Also why they are filming GITS in Asia, do we know the setting yet? Because we could totally be looking at a Blade Runner situation.

Besides the casting I haven't been paying attention to the Ghost in The Shell adaption. I do agree that casting all Japanese in a adaption of a racially diverse anime is odd. I don't watch a lot of Japanese movies but the last time I saw a Japanese movie that had a diverse cast.:o

Don't know if Japanese cinema have the funding to do so, but they need to start casting imports when adapting these kind of properties. I understand that Japan isn't the "melting pot" that America is nor are their resources for their film industry as abundant as Hollywood but still.....It starts to get really annoying when this happens on either side.

Wow, way to put 'WB' in the title.
Nothing to see here because Japanese production.
"American adaptation being American"
Does that imply African/Asian/Latino-Americans in lead roles?

:awesome: what movie?

Even with an anime featuring european names, the anime weeaboo types would ***** about them not casting japanese actors. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

This. There is definitely wiggle room in the ambiguity of some FMA characters' ethnicities (Ishvalans mostly) so I understand the choice to cast them all as Japanese to make the playing field neutral, so to speak. It's not something to praise or criticize, it just is what it is.

I watch a lot of tokusatsu, I can count on my hands the times I've seen non-Japanese actors in it.
