Following rumors yesterday that the long-running manga and anime series Bleach was going to receive a live-action adaptation, Warner Bros. confirmed today that it was indeed developing the project.

The film, which is scheduled to be released sometime in 2018 in Japan, will be directed by Shinsuke Sato (The Princess Blade, Gantz) and will star Japanese actor Sota Fukushi in the main role. Based on the manga, Bleach follows a high school student, Ichigo Kurosaki, after he comes into possession of the ability to reap souls. With the newfound powers, Ichigo must protect the human race from evil spirits and help those that have recently died move into the afterlife.

The news was announced in the most recent edition of Shonen Jump, a weekly magazine that carries different manga series. The anime ended its original run back in 2012, but the manga has inspired four animated films over the years and the comic series is still ongoing.

There’s no word from Warner Bros. on if it plans to bring the film stateside at this time. More information can be found on the official website.

Their info is just a bit out of date. The manga ended last week.

I'll take anything at this moment. I miss Bleach. I would prefer anime, but it will be fun to see live adaptation of Soul Society arc. I assume they will adapt that one.

SS arc, lol how are they going to pull that off on a small japanese budget.

Visually the Soul Society setting wouldn't be that expensive to pull off because it doesn't look outlandish...However the effects for the Bankais, Flash Steps, Shinkais The Menos Grande, and The Hollows would be the main effects that could become a point of concern but its possible that they could get some big investors to help them fund more plausible CG than some of their other adaptations.

And maybe he should build some muscle as well. Ichigo doesn't need a John Cena physique but Ichigo gets pretty ripped throughout the series.

Now I know Karen Fukuhara is Japanese-American but I think she could be a good Rukia if she's willing to travel to Japan for that role. Do any of you guys agree?

Soul Society arc doesnt have Menos, or Hollows, really I think. That's more Substitue Shinigami arc.

And you actually have just two bankai's by two captains in SS. I see Sōkyoku scene also requiring CGI. Majority of sword fights can be done with proper stunt work and be later edited in post production. You will likely use CGI on Getsuga Tensho attack and Ishida Quincy's powers. But even that can be done using proper stunt work and adding in post production effects. Same goes for Sado.

Bleach is really good property to be done right without requiring too much CGI on big screen. And Kubo doesnt spend too much time on backgrounds either for that matter if you are worried about locations. This isnt Attack on the Titan situation. You just need good director who can done work with fight scenes, editing and using certain angles so it doesnt look cheap like majority of anime adapations.

Well they have the Gantz director so hopefully this won't be too difficult for him.

Nonetheless, unless they skip Ichigo's origin, I can see them doing a two parter where the Substitute Soul Reaper arc is part 1 and The Save Rukia arc is part two.

I can see that. Two parts. Subtitute Shinigami arc beside Menos and few Hollows can be done really nice as proper adaptation. You could easily go bit horror movie route. It doesnt have bankai's. It doesnt have shunpo's, captains (unless you count end of arc where one appear) or really big fights. And not much use of Getsuga Tensho. You could focus more on characters and Inoue backstory and Ishida as his rival and his Quincy powers.

Rurouni Kenshin, my favorite anime live adaptation, first movie was done for 20M budget, second and thrid for 30M. And Attack on Titan was done for 40M budget. I think for somewhere around 30-35M you can have great Bleach movie.

Also should the subplot about Grand Fisher be emphasized?

There is so much manga that will be translated into live action movie..

Besides this, there will be Tokyo Ghoul, Gintama, and Full Metal Alchemist

I expecting most from Gintama and Full Metal Alchemist because the two lead actors are my favorites (Shun Oguri in Gintama and Hey Say JUMP's Yamada Ryousuke in FMA)

Gintama?! Oh ****, that's my jam! Is Shun Oguri playing Gintoki? Would've preferred the guy who plays Serizawa from Crows Zero...

Can't wait to see Elizabeth!:woot::woot:

Hi sweetre15...
nice suggestion, but i think this is hard of happening...

Because many Japanese actors actress whose got popular in Western (America) like Watanabe Ken, Sanada Hiroyuki, Koyuki is weirdly enough is not getting a lot of appearance in local movies. Especially in big budget movies. (They only appear sometimes on a indie movie)
So, i doubt that this time it would be different.

If i may, I'd like share some trivia from Japan entertainment culture point of view...

A new trend since 2000-er that when a local big project movie in Japan, the producers here usually use a talent whose come from boyband members, a magazine model, and a gravure actress, idols, who all very popular here in Japan but maybe unknown for Western audience..

A boyband members (like EXILE, KAT-TUN, Arashi, Hey!Say!JUMP, Kis-my-ft2, etc)
Fashion models (like Oguri Shun, Yamazaki Kento, Satou Takeru, Matsuzaka Tori, etc),
Gravure model actress like Matsumoto Erika, Hirano Yui, Takeda Rena, Kakei Miwako, etc *(FYI, gravure actress is NOT an adult video actress but they simply just pose in swimsuit for magazine and DVD, which is normal in our entertainment culture)
and one more is from Idols members (like AKB48's Oshima Yuuko, Nogizaka 46's Shiraishi Mai, etc...)

I believe 100 % many of friends in this forum is very very unfamiliar with the name i mentioned above (except maybe for those who follow Japanese entertainment) but they all are very popular here and have huge fanbase around the country, and of course the producers can see the advantage by using those talents in big project movie... A huge success!

There are no wonder now that Rurouni Kenshin, Shingeki no Kyojin, and now the upcoming Bleach, Gintama, Tokyo Ghoul has all filled with idols, boyband members, and gravure actress.

and FYI, Fukushi Sota (the main cast for this Bleach movie) is also a fashion model, idol, and his debut work is when he played as Kisaragi Gentarou (Kamen Rider Fourze) in Japanese superhero show TV series, Kamen Rider Fourze (aired in 2011 until 2012) and now he is very popular among teenage and young girl in Japan.

I'm sorry if this a little bit out of topic, and sorry if my english stucture is a disaster..

Hi Lone, thanks for your reply...

Yes, there will be Gintama live action
Yes, Shun is the actor who played Genji in Crows Zero is the main cast in Gintama

The actor who played Serizawa (Yamada Takayuki) is also known as his role in another manga adapted live action of "Usujima-kun"

So...In other words, don't be surprised if someone like maybe Ueto Aya or Aya Hirano would appear in these adaptations, correct? Though I'm aware that Aya was once a subject of controversy

However using gravure idols might come in handy for characters like Rangiku, Orihime, and Kikaku Shiba due to their measurements
