I don't care if it's the #1 selling graphic novel of all-time. Joe Schmoe doesn't know who the hell Doctor Manhattan or Nite Owl is.

Forget for a moment that you read the graphic novel and were blown away by the trailer that seemed eerily 100% faithful to so much in the book.

If you're an average movie-goer, what do you really gain from this trailer? Some "ahhh...kay... that looks kind of cool" moments, but you still have no idea what the hell this movie is about and probably view it as some superhero knock-off. Something like Darkman? It doesn't even have the League of Extroardianry Gentlemen appeal where at least someone can grasp the concept of the famous individual characters involved regardless if they've read any comic book.

Hey, the movie has already been made and looks great, but I'd like to see an attempt to bring in the mainstream audience if possible so that more of my favorite old school DC, Vertigo or indy titles can be produced into big budget filmmaker-has-all-the-power films. :oldrazz: This is NOT Lord of the Rings where most people only need hear the title and instantly remember the theme and characters.

Points out this is the internet age, anyone can look it up :p and I'm sure they will have the actors on G4 and others to explain who the characters are

Sales for Watchmen have skyrocketed since the trailer cameout. I think we don't have to worry if such an ambiguous glimpse can make people go out and buy the novel.

I really really really really really really hope this movie becomes a huge BO hit

The first trailer is fine for now. Big movies with two or three trailers spread out over time generally save the Plot Heavy Trailer for later in the game, whereas the first one is usually just something with iconic or exciting images to get the audience excited. At least that's my general impression. Look at any big blockbuster from the past five years: Star Wars prequels, TDK, Spider-Man, etc -- they all follow this pattern.

Granted, even with a more plot-explanatory trailer, I do think the PR department will need to reach out to the audience to prepare them for the tone of Watchmen. But really I'm not concerned.

I'd imagine they'll explain more of the plot and all that in the next few trailers since the format of the 1st will obviously not be the basis for all the others

There will probably be mandatory tv spots where each character gets a spotlight. Some dialog put over cool scenes of them acting cool.

The trailer was supposed to make people curious enough to learn about the characters themselves, obviously it worked, since the GN has been selling out.

I have no idea what the B.O.-numbers are gonna be with Watchmen.
If Watchmen is succesful, then why do you suppose that is?

I dont even know why TDK was such a huge succes.
Yes, I know, the movie was quite good, but it was also dark, mean, violent, long and it didn't really have any fantastic blockbuster eye-candy.

Anyone know? Because it couldn't have been the hype around Ledger's performance and death alone.

true that. i'm a big batman fan, and i felt like i was the only one who was gonna like it, but it came out to be a huge success. i'm thankful, but also confused. lol.

I just think that it's one of those rare cases where a movie is just good enough to please fans and non-fans alike.
IMO many came to watch TDK becase of Heath's death , BB and the extremely positive news and stuck because the movie had repeat value.

because sometimes a film is more than a bunch effects shots

I say it does alittle better than 300 numbers. Like they threw in the whole "Visionary Director of 300" So that should get some audineces back who enjoyed 300 and wana see what Zack Snyder will do with this film

i think a short 1:15 trailer for each character to show who they are and what there purpose is would do good

I do think it's true that the trailer campaign is going to have to explain a bit more about the film. That said, I'm sure the teaser trailer at least aroused curiosity in the non-comic book reading community, even if it left them without much of an idea as to what WATCHMEN actually is.

I'm almost positive it will. This is a teaser, it's not supposed to give away the plot. I'm sure there'll be a trailer later on that explains the basic story, probably in November/December.

The Nov/Dec trailer just needs to give people an idea of what the story will be. The special FX and vibe/setting of the film are already clear from the trailer.

But for right now, they NEED to release that comic con footage. This movie is not PG-13, and it is not about Batman. Us comic fans need something more to show to our non-comic friends to get them hooked on this film now. Hook as many non-comic audience members as you can early... then when the full trailer comes out in the winter, the hype for this film will reach a fevered pitch.

And a fevered pitch is what you're gonna need to make same solid gross with an R-rated film whose profits will already be eaten into by FOX studios.
