FX’s Shogun | Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai

Finally watched the two episode premiere last night, it was like a glorious 2 hour movie, the production values, costuming and cinematography are first class, as were the performances across the board, obviously Sanada stands tallest but Hiro is holding his own opposite him and Ana Sawai is giving a nicely understated performance, but the one that stood out for me is Asano as Kashigi, who is a brilliant character, yes he has an odd interest in boiling people and kinky voyeurism but he's not a 1 dimensional loon, his outer bluster hides a crafty mind and a prideful side, he played a shrewd move between Toranaga and Ishido when he used the bandits to rescue Blackthorn, yes Toranaga is onto him but he appreciates that he's more than meets the eye.

I reactivated my Disney+ sub so my mother can watch the show. (It's on D+ here in old Francia)
It makes me realize that there is almost nothing that I would watch again on Disney+ :(

This show is stuntin' on most blockbusters with it's cgi.

The sets, woah.

The dialogue... amazing.

The actors are killing it.

...they really found a solid John, needed a guy with a vintage head/face. Loved him on Peaky Blinders.

Woah what an episode, gripping from start to finish and stunning to look at, best one so far and easily one of the best hours of tv I have seen in a while, this show is building on its strong start.

The one casting I don't like (but it's no big dead either) is Captain Ferriera, he doesn't look Portugues at all.
The again hard to top "mister villain face" Vladek Sheybal.

Well Louis Ferreria was actually born in Portugal before the family moved to Canada. I wonder what folks off of the western edge of Europe are supposed to look like.

Darker hair, a bit more tanned.
I probably think that because I mostly saw him in Canadian or US TV shows.

Shogun: Hiroyuki Sanada Breaks Down Japanese Epic, Season 2 Pathways

Shogun is presented as a limited series, but can you imagine telling more stories within this framework?

When we get through episode 10, we’ll finish the novel’s period. No one knows what’s going to happen next. But we have history, real history models, and clearly, we know what happened. So, yeah. It all depends on the audience’s reaction. But as a creator, with so many people watching worldwide and streaming the same day all over the world, it’s so exciting. This kind of project is important to the future. I believe if somebody wants to create stories about other cultures, they should hire a specialist for each culture and actors from each culture. That’s going to be a new normal, I hope.

It would be cool to see this go beyond the initial limited series. The writing would have to be top-notch so that it can stand shoulder to shoulder with this story, but I feel like the writers are up to the task. And they can always lean into real history, like they said.
