Rise of the Silver Surfer GALACTUS Discussion

LOL... I have to wonder when exactly you became the arbiter of all-things 'canon' within the FF, Dragon. Clearly your ability to pick and choose which aspects of specific storylines should be considered gospel and which ones shouldn't has grown to immense proportions.

For the record - taken from page 87 of the Fantastic Four: Marvel Encyclopedia, published BY Marvel in 2004 :

Seems to me that if Marvel was confident enough to publish it in a hardbound book... it's 'canon'.

Then again... if you never read that particular book, I suppose to you it couldn't possibly be true.

You must be joking.

First, that listing is hardly accurate or complete. Or is consuming a planet a power or weapon? Is traveling by a small circular ship a power or a weapon? Is having a ship that's the size of a solar system a power or a weapon?

And manipulation of energy is a pretty superficial description of his ability. He manipulates matter including biology as well. But I guess since that isn't in a "Hardbound book" it doesn't count, right?

So, I'd say that this particular source doesn't fully represent what's canon.

Do you have an actual STORY that shows Byrne's concept? Or isn't that gospel?

I think its more fox than marvel.....

Yeah, this has nothing to do with Marvel. If Marvel had that much power over their films at Fox, we wouldn't have gotten this Galactus, Cyclops from X-Men wouldn't be dead, and Phoenix would've had a firebird in X3. That is why Marvel is making their own films (Iron Man, etc), so they can have full creative control.

Well, for an incomplete list it seems it was important enough for them to include. My advice would be to just accept they were right and call it a day.

Galactus was about as teasing and as disappointing as a fan could expect. After seeing it last night...average and general going movie audiences probably won't care. At the last minute I was almost hopeful that I was gonna see like a something, a face, his body...but...nothing...I don't know what would have been so hard about teasing us with some kind of real Galactus-like image. Oh well...its all said and done now...unless they release a dvd with re-worked effects for the ending, but I won't get my hopes up.

Challenging me to go to Byrne's message board would prove what, exactly? But I'll gladly meet you on any board you choose and take on anybody you want, baby. Dragon fears no man.

MY proof however, is that we've seen Galactus in MANY, MANY stories since FF #262 in space and on other worlds. The Infinity Gauntlet series, The 80's-90's Silver Surfer series- The Galactus mini-series the covers for which are posted in Malus' thread. Does Galactus look different to you in any of those?

Can you point to Byrne's concept being used as canon?

Galactus' very origin contradicts Byrne's idea. And his suggestion that Galactus is a test of a species' worthiness is supposed to be a thematic one. Not a literal concept.

You must be joking.

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! And now the dance begins.

You yourself posted...

I'd say that the excerpt from Marvel's OWN ENCYCLOPEDIA provides the info conclusively... in plain old Black and White. In essence... MARVEL COMICS has STATED conclusively that that is the nature of Galactus.

So now you want to change the parameters of the argument. Typical Dragon. You just HAVE to be right that you can't even stick to your own requirements.

A little disappointed about the Galactus cloud as well. Though I do have to admit that the cloud form actually worked with me. It was scary that it was this intergalactic death cloud thingy. That cloud as a villain as a acloud actually works well enough. It shows you just exactly how terrible it destroys planets. And it shows that to a successfull effect. The ONLY part that doesn't work is when none of us can accept the image of the Galactus we all know so well. Buy into it, put aside that image that's so familiar to us and that part of the story works well I think.

But not showing any recognizable part of Galactus (aside from the shadow) was not a good decision. Galactus could have still been shown in true form in the middle of the cloud - a la Star Trek: The Motion Picture's V'ger. In the heart of that cloud should have been the entirety of Galactus' bodily form and shape. Maybe not the canon image we all know but the wipy cloud form of Galactus' body.

(here's hoping a "Director's Cut" edition of Fantasic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer has Galactus's form in the middle of the cloud.)

If Galactus was there then why didn't they just you know SHOW HIM?!

Stop defending it.

I really dont undestand how you can say that is not atleast the shape of his head in that cloud!?

Oh please. You had to know I meant in A STORY. Every comment I've made has been in this regard.

Things like that encyclopedia and the MU Handbook don't represent canon. That's the very reason they're constantly updated. It's also why Marvel started using terms like "Known Powers And Abilities".

Anyway, the decscription is inaccurate in regards to Galactus being a memeber of any race viewing him. There aren't too many 28 ft. humans.

FINALLY saw the gif. Yeah, I can see how damn vague it is now. I can see how people see a face, but at the same time I can also see how people don't.

I love this pic and feel it must be reposted :D
