Game over! With video!

Found this in one of the other threads last night, figured I'd post it here just to end any debate over who played Superman.

Now this should be intresting

That picture is fail. Officially, only 5 of those guys played Superman.

Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh.

The others played Superboy. TW plays a young Clark pre-Superman.

The American Gladiators guy from the fan film (Mike O'Hearn) doesn't count for anything.

I wish I could avoid counting Dean Cain also, oh well.

I was wondering who the guy on the far left was...

I actually didn't mind Dean Cain's Superman. Yeah, his Superman was very campy, but that was the tone of the show itself. I really liked his Clark though.

That's the guy from the Superman/Batman thing right?

EDIT: Nevermind, found the trailer:

Who was Kirk Alyn?
Was he the guy who did the Superman movie serials, I know about the Batman movie serials? From way back when.
I don't know. I literally never heard of him. :(

I honestly didn't know about Kirk Alyn at all. He's also probably long dead?

But I really don't see how this could be considered the final nail on any coffin. If anything, it proves Tom's willing to don the suit, mostly because there is no evidence that he won't be wearing the suit by the end of the show. :)

Also, has anyone heard of the curse of Superman? The fact that George Reeves and Christopher Reeves are both dead, and not from old age, has something to do with it.

I don't know, I just heard about it somewhere. I don't believe it or anything, but has anyone heard of it?

I don't know, I may have been 10 years late while watching Lois and Clark, but I didn't see the campiness in it.

It's not Adam West's Batman. :)
I liked it.

And I think Tom Welling could pull off Superman well.

Maybe outside the context of Smallville.

Within Smallville continuity, how would anyone tell the difference between Superman and Clark?

He plays both Clark and The Blur as the real person all the same, going public is going to be tricky.

How is it everyone forgets Gerard Christopher and John Haynes Newton?

I didn't forget them...they played SuperBOY, and the guy who missed Alyn (who I was replying about) specificly said he wasn't counting the guys who played Superboy.

I happen to have a bunch of the Superboy syndicated series...and Gerard Christopher was very good in the role.

First of all...it's George REEVES and Christopher REEVE...no ending s for Chris.

Kirk Alyn was the first live action Superman. He played him in 2 serials in the 40's...and they were the most successful serials of all time.

The "curse of Superman" is widely known of and talked about.

this is GREAT news...i think tom has been approached by nolan. the perfect time now that the show will be over. i bet $$ he is being considered....take that superman fans!!!! :hehe:

:super:

well you got to remember when the show first started he was only like 24 yrs old and didnt want the show to be a superboy in costume type of show and all that. But through the yrs the show has grown and changed and now we are in the past 2 yrs into more superman materials welling has probably seen that its ok and there is nothing to worry about and all that.

Sorry, C.Lee. I get the Reeves/Revee thing manged a lot. :(

And thank you for telling me who Kirk Alyn was.
And the Superman Curse thing.

Man of Tomorrow, they can never address the fact that people should know he's Superman. Suspension of Disbelief. :)

If they destroy the Suspension of Disbelief, they might as well break the Fourth Wall forever.

Well if they want to go the campy Dean Cain/L+C route, that would make sense.

Within Smallville's context though, so many key characters, co-workers, SV/Metropolis citizens have seen him without the glasses/reporter disguise, there would need to be some kind of mind manipulation for this to make sense.

Yeah, but the thing is, you can't actually address it.

I mean, you can't be a fan of Superman, and complain that people don't know that Clark Kent is Superman. Or that people should be mind whammied.
It's the only Suspension of Disbelief that cannot be broken. It's like the Fourth Wall, you do not break it on a show like Smallville. Alfred Hitchcock would agree with me. And he was one of the first people in TV/Movies to break it.

As Tempus said on L&C, "How dumb was she?" :)
You're asking Smallville to ask it's fans, how dumb are they?

It's something this show cannot do. Addressing it, shows that Smallville thinks it's fans are so stupid, that they need things spelled out for them.
That's a death sentence.

Not to mention, anyone who's read the Superman comics knows it's not a major thing. One way the comics finally explained it was his Super-Hypnotism, in the Bronze Age.
They never explained it since. They have no reason to.

I think it would be like it was in Spider-Man 2: people saw Peter's face on that train, and not one of them was going to tell they saw.

People know, but choose not to disclose that to help protect Clark's identity.

I don't know many spoilers from the upcoming season, but it seems that they'll be going that route with Lois.

She knows if she discloses his ID, his life will never be normal. I would think she would recognize that trying to achieve at least some normality in his life is why he's not out saving people 24/7...

She won't spoil that for him out of love for him and to protect him.

I think that's okay.

People not recognizing Superman is really Clark even though you'd have to be dumb as a brick not to is a conceit of the franchise.

They just won't and I don't think they'll have to explain why not. It'll just be the way things are, like it's been since 1938.

I would be ok with Welling playing Superman with no connection to Smallville. I would love to see Welling above most actors.
I wouldn't... they would lso hve to bring long erica Durance because she is the ONLY Lois Lne in my eyes :o

Exactly, and this is the big deal. Any attempt to actually explain it insults over 75 years of Superman mythos. Which is the unforgivable sin here.

You just don't explain it. Smallville can never explain it.
To do so, insults everyone who considers themselves a fan of Superman.

I think the main problem is how they will get away with it since Lex knows Clark is an alien. He'll know Clark is Superman once he debuts in Metropolis. As for Lois, I'm not too concerned about. Perry is another question though.

I have to disagree with this. Normally I would have no problems with just assuming no one knows or that the certain few people who know would keep it a secret, but this is where Smallville has dug itself into a pretty big hole. Since around season 3-4, I've been waiting for the dual identity storyline and the forging of the glasses-wearing Clark Kent but now, it's way too late. I have this feeling that no matter how the writers explain the glasses and no one recognizing him, I'll still be disappointed because pretty much everyone and their dog knows Clark. And yes, the writers DO need to address this issue and we know that
the topic of a dual identity is somehow mentioned in "Homecoming."

Unless you count career killer, i'm pretty sure Dean Cain proved there's nothing to this "curse" other than some unfortunate events happening to some of the people who've played superman.

Oh right, that other guy is still fine too... The newest one.
