Gamers' Legacy: retro console discussion thread

Konami was the king of beat 'em ups in the late 80's through the mid 90s. Unfortunately, their games were almost all licensed, and the licenses they used are pretty much all held by different publishers (except maybe Ninja Turtles, which I think has separate licenses for TV and film). If Konami wants to re-release some of these games, they're going to have to strike a deal with the current license holders and the IP owners which will probably let them in on some of the profits. It's not entirely likely, but it's hardly impossible. Goldeneye almost got re-released on Xbox Live Arcade and Virtual Console, and would have been if Nintendo had co-operated (since they were #3 in what would have been a 3 company deal).

BTW, I just snagged this guy off of eBay today... Now I need some games!

Also, I might be picking up a Score Master for Super Nintendo soon. ^_^

I want another Genesis..mostly for the Jurassic Park and X-Men games.

Oh..and Strider 1&2...love them.

this thread has inspired to hit up ebay for an old console thanks guys

Nice find, thanks! :)

I just grabbed Gunstar Heroes off of eBay today... It was $19 including shipping, and I couldn't resist.

I've still got the carts for the Sonic games laying around somewhere, so I'll probably play those sometime soon. I really need to start checking tag sales again though, because untold troves of old video game treasures can be found at them.

If you some delving on Racketboy, you'll find some other lists he's done for Genesis games, such as "games the pushed the limits of the Genesis" and "best hidden gems for Genesis".

If you're into RPGs, there's a fairly new Genesis game out called Beggar Prince. By fairly new, it came out 2 years ago.

they are still making genesis games? 2 years is not that long ago

I just looked it up. The game originally came out in Taiwan in 1996. An English translation was done for it, and that version came out in 06

I just looked it up Beggar Prince. It looks really cool, and I really dig the idea of a new Genesis game coming out after all these years! $46 is a little expensive for me since I'm living off of student loans and my parents ATM, but it definitely has my attention. I might buy it in the future, when I have money again. For now, I think I'll focus on the essentials.

My god was the Game Gear awesome. Incredibly ahead of it's time, but still amazing none the less.

Yeah, I remember I'd stay up way past my bedtime playing Sonic Triple Trouble under my bedsheets with my headphones on. Good times.

Well I'm a sucker for consoles, so I still have all my originals, NES,SNES, Sega Gensis..etc..

A few hours ago I was kicking some tail in SMB 3.:o

Although it's fun to go back and play all my old games, they still don't give me the replay value as games do now, with online features and what not.

Of course, games back then didn't take long to beat, and you couldn't save on most systems.

Did you have those heavy ass rechargable gorilla battery grip extender things like I did? That thing was a must have. I remember spending hours playing The Tails Game, the X-Men game, and Mega Man.

Nah, I had no such luck. I had a battery charger, a box full of rechargeable AAs and an AC adapter though.

Gunstar heroes was awesome. 2 player side scrolling fun :). I loved the gun set up too, where you have 4 diff types and can combine 2 pick ups during the lvl to get something special. I typically used the tracer so I could dodge while it hit. Also because I used that jump slide deal a lot since it did a lot of dmg to certain bosses (it takes out that block boss in 3 or so hits).

I almost got my hands on an SNES score master from eBay, but someone outsniped me by $0.5 within the last 60 seconds. :(

That thing is friggin' rare. I can't believe how hard it is to find and yet that piece of junk the Super Advantage is everywhere.

Loved the design of that console. The controll pads were like obese stealth bombers.

Retro game collecting seems like a cool hobby.

I wonder if I should try selling my Genesis. I still have the box for it and it's pretty in good condition from what I remember.

Yeah, I thought they were a lot cooler than the model 1 gamepads, and if you were into fighting games they were a must-have. They were great for alleviating some of the Genesis's SNES envy, since it put them on level footing in terms of button counts. :cwink:

Also, the Genesis had a rock-solid arcade stick, which can never be a bad thing (and it's much easier and cheaper to find than that @#!$ Nintendo Score Master).

I picked up Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II CE, Ecco the Dolphin, Revenge of Shinobi, and Jurassic Park off of eBay this morning. Unfortunately, I accidentally had them shipped back home instead of to my dorm, so I won't be able to play them until I fly out there next week. Oh well, hopefully it's worth the wait!

I probably won't be playing MK or SF2 much until I have to go back out to my dorm, because I have a MAME arcade machine at home which offers a superior experience. But still, the Genesis versions are fun to have for nostalgia and they're a very effective way to experience them on my old CRT TV (they were only $2 a piece). Eventually I'd like to pick up a copies of Super Street Fighter 2 and Killer Instinct for SNES too.

Man, if you have it and it's in good condition. I say keep it.

The Gensis is still a fun system to play. Today I ordered the red cartridge Spider-Man:Maximum Carnage. For some reason it went missing, but I still had Seperation Anxiety.

Anyway, keep it. And maybe save up for the other systems you want. If you want to collect/play the old stuff.

I find it fun going back and playing these games and feeling all nostagelic.

Since you guys mentioned the Genesis controller, I actually don't care for it anymore. At the time I liked it, but after using the PS controller for so long, the Genesis controller is just too flat. Your fingers get smooshed at the back. If it had grips it'd be great tho. I do give it props tho, hand positions aside, the six button controller was a thing of beauty.

I haven't touched the Genesis in maybe 5 years. I'm not home that much so it's not really valuable to me.

My dad has Atari (2600 IIRC). The box is a bit beat up but the console doesn't work. He also has a lot of games still in their boxes which are in pretty good condition.
