Because Garfield is a popular, iconic property. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean anything. Majority of people do. And the news that there might finally be a quality Garfield movie is note worthy.

I was gonna try to be dismissive of this, but I just don't have the energy. If Dreamworks Animation can keep raking in cash for the majority of their dreck, then I'm sure this could work if someone actually puts in a certain amount of effort.
