Gatiss & Moffat to do Dracula for BBC

Nope as we have a short description on what the series will be about:

I wish BBC would stop with this 3 episode season horse ****. Twenty episode seasons are too long for shows, but BBC is the complete opposite extreme.

If BBC episodes had Netflix pacing, absolutely nothing would happen in that season. You'd have to wait several seasons before any semblance of plot occurs.

Three "feature length" (but I'll believe that when I see it) sounds more than reasonable for a faithful adaptation of the book. Coppola made a pretty decent fist of it in two and a half hours so I'm happy with 3 long episodes as long as time is not wasted, because it's a story that requires a frantic, panicked, pace.

I'd love to see another series revolving around Dracula but the character nearly always falters when he's taken out of his story and plumped into another one entirely original (case in point, NBC's shocking effort). Dracula just doesn't seem designed to operate outside of his own realm so to speak.

Plus it helps to know that Gatiss is a huge fan of the character so I'm happy that we're in good hands.

Tbh the three episodes a season has been a huge success for Sherlock and I guess the BBC are hoping to replicate that success. Honestly I would rather we get three solid episodes as I have faith in Moffat/Gatiss because they've done well with this series structure in Sherlock.. well at least in its first two seasons.

Ok he sounded a bit silly at the end. I don't know if he was meant to sound Hungarian but be sounded more like some East London geezer. And why does he have nails he can push in and out?

Trailer looks really promising but the lead actor does not look that great as Dracs

“Try and Stay Calm, You’re Doing Very Well” - BBC One’s Dracula Trailer Drops at MCM London Comic Con

Then we got to hear the boys (and girl) talk about the show. How in the novel, you hardly get to see Dracula, and he stays in the shadows a lot, where as here Dracula is in almost every scene. Oh and the bit from the novel with Dracula on the boat that gets a few pages in Bram Stoker’s original gets a lot more play in the TV show. They’ve made him the hero of the show, the protagonist – though still just as nasty. He has no moral dilemmas, he just wants to eat people. A creature who has seen empires rise and fall, who has seen it all before and who likes humanity – they are his food source after all. And by now he’s become quite a connoisseur of humanity. And that you will get all the beats in the show, though not necessarily in the right order. And we’ll also get bits of the novel in the BBC show that have never been adapted before.

Including getting to see Dracula’s bum.

They also got to talk about Mark Gatiss making a Dracula documentary, reuniting seven Hammer brides of Dracula, at the original studio, which Gatiss calls ‘possibly the gayest moment of my life.’

Expect a very scary show. ‘Children must definitely not watch it and so definitely must’ says Gatiss. There will be nightmares. Moffat says he loves all manner of vampire stories, but that the best ones always have Dracula in them…

Gatiss points out how everyone has a different take on the book and the character, pro-feminist and anti-feminist, anti-foreigner and anti-immigrant all at the same time. But theirs will definitely be the best. Gatiss says that they’ve been through a Twilight period of nice animal blood-eating vampires, and they want to make them very, very nasty again….

It looks amazing. The candlelight lighting is a nice touch.

this is going to be awesome!

Cannot wait for this. Adore Sherlock and can see no reason why they wont smash this one out of the park too - Gatiss loves his horror and must be overjoyed that he's got to Drac.

This looks great. The lead looks kinda like the classic Bela Lugosi style Drac but not in a cheesy way. I wonder who Gatiss plays on the show. Van Helsing, maybe?

I wish he looked and spoke like Count Von Count instead.

view it as a movie, split into three parts. It's quality, not quantity.

Yeah I mean 3 feature length episodes is more than enough to tell the tale. Anything more would just be filler.

That being said, given Gatiss is a fan I was hopeful he'd stay faithful to the book but it sounds like he's taken a few artistic liberties. I'm disappointed in that given, in spite of the sheer volume of media the character has been involved in, few of them have actually given us a close adaptation.

So I remain cautiously hopeful.

If you are going to watch on Netflix and not the BBC AVOID SPOILERS LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Dont read reviews. Dont risk it. This two like suprises and this one has got a couple you wont see coming and are BIG.

Can't stress enough how true this is  Do not read reviews, etc.

Found this take on the old story quite enjoyable so far. No spoilers, but will say Claes Bang's Dracula is refreshingly evil thus far and a rather similar portrayal to Tom Ellis's Lucifer. Looking forward to see how it wraps up in the last one.

I like it.
The castle looked good, acting is fine, Dracula is cocky but not too much, the nun is witty
(and she is a Van Helsing)
So far I liked ep02 more than ep01 because of the setting on a boat and the huis clos (closed session ?).

It felt kind of uneven as a whole, particulry episode 3.

On the positive side, I really liked this Dracula and Van Helsing - they were dynamite (talk about great chemistry). I'm not familiar with either of them, but the Dracula guy is smoking hot for 50+ yo man, and very charming. Van Helsing was the MVP, hands down.

I wasn't impressed with some of the choices they made in episode 3, and the explanation for his sunlight-phobia seams bogus (thought at no point in the series did they show that sunlight actually burns him just that he is averse, so cudos there). The focus should have been more on Zoe/Agatha and less on Lucy and Jack.

I did love the idea that as he drinks people's blood, he gains their memories, thoghts, language skills and alike. Neat way to bridge the cultural and scientific leaps of 123 years

It was really good until Renfield arrived.

I only disliked how he was brought into play, so much for cyber security at the J.H Fondation.

I didnt mind Renfield that's just the point when the show misses a step.
The Harker organization has existed for 123 years anticipating the day they would get their hands on Dracula. They built an underground bunker, and a safe room specifically designed to kill Dracula and vampires. The organization exists to do scientific research and if necessary contain and eliminate vampires. And when they finally get their hands on Dracula all it takes is one lawyer making a single threat to go to the police and the organization caves and releases the 500 year old mass murdering blood sucking monster. BS.

I would expect them to kill the lawyer and get rid of the body. Surely a secret scientific organization that has existed for over a century with it's own mercs can and would disappear a body and evidence if the alternative was releasing Dracula.

First 2 episodes were good, the last was a let down. Pretty lame ending after the build up (hello Moffat...). And agree with the above
the Harker institute holding Dracula had promise then they just dropped it like a stone with the lawyer showing up.
