It makes sense for GM or Chrysler to start opening factories up in China, since China has now overtaken America in car sales. And the labor is significantly cheaper. Of course politically that won't happen... the government is not in the business of making money.

Forty-one percent (41%) of Americans expect the quality of General Motors cars to get worse now that the federal government is the majority owner of the bankrupt automaker.

The Gov is majority shareholder... but they are not going into the car business. Once they set the direction of the company, the U.S. Gov will sell it's shares to International Industialist.... much like Chrysler. There would be to much resistants if the U.S. Gov try to force a sell of GM to Internationalist right now. So they will do it systematically. Chrysler... no one cares about.

I wish someone would give a damn about Chrysler, because I'm about to be out of a job. I work as an Internet Manager in a Small, but profitable, family owned dealership in East Texas. Thanks to everything that is going on our franchise is being pulled and were are basicaly being told to go **** ourselves.

now you're just being mean...isn't the issue with GM and Chrysler is that they aren't making enough money to pay off their debt?? how do these companies make their money?? By selling cars

so what exactly is wrong??

There are 3 dealerships in my immediate area that have dropped their GM stock of their own volition because NO ONE is buying them

Indeed, Chrysler's sales lacked which means their products were inferior or they were making products that most people didn't want. That is the way of business. What sucks even more is now that the government runs GM and Chrysler, they will make them make cars that people aren't buying and will further run them into the ground.

Id like to think if GM actually jumped on designing hybrids and fuel efficient vehicles back when every other car company started their design cycle for those, they might not be in this mess...or at least not as deep

Well, the fact of the matter, GM have been making hybrids & fuel efficient cars for years... since the late 90's in overseas markets. They were not allowed to sell those cars here in the U.S. because of Gov. Federal Safety Regulations. The same Gov. that restrict one thing while propagating another.

but foreign companies have been selling those cars here for a bit now....if it was a matter of regulation, why didn't GM build vehicles to comply with those regs??

BL, you are not seeing the big picture or I should say the Global Picture. You are looking at it from one point of the world... America. You can't do that anymore... you are nearly a Century behind.

Anyway, there are Global standards that every country must abide to. Individual countries have their own cafe standards that applies to their regulations. Now those individual standards may not apply to foriegn competitors in shipping to the States. So, they are allowed to meet basic Global Standards, and face no penalties against U.S. Standards. U.S. Standards only applies to U.S. Companies.

Which is one of the reasons U.S. Companies expand overseas on foriegn soil to avoid stiff U.S. Regulations; than ship back to the U.S.

U.S. Companies would be fined heavily for the levels of lead and impurities in plastics, that Chinese don't have to follow... as long as they meet Global Standards. Which are typical less than U.S. Standards. The U.S. will not enforce these same standards for U.S. HomeGrown Companies against Foriegn competitors. Which effectively ruins U.S. Manufacturing.
