generalized costume complaints

Most of the characters in X-Men have crappy costumes-heroes AND villains. I don't think the majority of thme look good even on paper. They're loud, pointlessly accessorized and have no theme to support. Many of them look like they're just wearing tights for the sake of wearing tights-like they do it because it's expected. But that doesn't mean that with the right imagination & effort we couldn't have gotten some cool movie suits. I defended the black leather for years but I'm no longer sure that was the best way to go. But nothing else was even considered.

I'm against the black leather, but only because it didn't even look all that practical. Something like the suits from Grant Morrison's run would have made more sense to me.

Black leather with more thought?

Pretty much, yeah. I like the idea of a uniform look for the team, at least early on in their career as a group. And the Morrison era costumes weren't straight up black leather. The jackets, I believe, were leather, as were the boots I believe, but everything else was pretty much normal fabric.

I think the individualized touches would come as the team grows and establishes itself. Also, I'm very much in favor of masks, since early on they're trying to keep a low profile and not be linked to the school.

A team uniform is best. I've said so for years. They're not the Avengers or the JLA-solo heroes who established themselves first & formed a team after the fact. Individual touches should be as warranted-Cyclops' visor, Storm's cape (just because I like to see it billow in the wind) Wolverine's tiger stripes (just because, admittedly, I'm used to them) but in the end they are a family & should have suits that reflect this.

I am gonna throw a tomato at the next person who says that. It's been 8 effing years now. Find some new material or let it go.

Heh. Eight years later the GG suit still looks like crap man, what can you do. It's a generalized costume complaint so it fits the thread.

^Exactly, eight years won't erease that suit's suckiness unfortunely. Thirteen years later and B&R sucks as much as it always have, but we only complain a little less because now we have a great Bat-movie franchise to tide us over :)

At the same time, I appreciate more individual flair as the team developes and grows. Early on, straight up uniforms, but when they're more established, I'd like to see uniforms that the individual characters have personalized, carrying elements from their individual looks that are centered around the basic theme of the uniforms.

The movie suits did try to convey this, giving each member his or her own little unique touches & different colored trim/tubing. But these things were barely noticeable.

I noticed. I just thought it was an odd way to go about it.

Had they gone more ostentacious, maybe you & other fans would feel differently.

Doesnt make it less true.

Weird Al setting it to song doesn't helpe either lol.

Im assuming the powerranger comment is refereing to the Green Goblin. I've never really understood the direction they went with that. I mean Dafoe is a pretty odd looking dude anyways, something could have been done with that.

Fair enough.

Frankly, thinking about it more, I think one of the worst costumes in the X-Men movies is the Juggernaut, the helmet is all wrong. The costume could have been fine if he had the helmet from the comics, without Juggernaut doesn't like right.

Apparently some thought that WITH it he wouldn't look right. I find it funny that he said the purpose of the helmet was to protect his face, & yet his face was completely exposed. I think the overall look only really worked when he was in motion.

i couldnt get past the rubber stomach

Wasn't as bad as Cap's rubber ears, which made it easy for me.
Anybody here watch "World's Dumbest"? I saw one the other day where Vinnie got his @$$ WHUPPED by a couple of average Joe's in a bar.

I do hate the Power Ranger complaint for GG. However I would like a little more faithfulness put in his costume. Especially when you have Willem Dafoe's face to work with. His suit SHOULD look bizarre and out of place, the guy's a lunatic! Qhy would he care if he looks cool? A more faithful costume would show how far off the deep end he is.

^All they had to do with Green Goblin was have him put some tattered robes over the armored green suit, which to my mind makes sense, but the helmet was clearly a custom job after the fact. It wouldn't have been produced for the military's usage of the suit with the goblin like face. Since they gave Osborn a mask collection, then he uses a goblin mask from the collection. That makes so much more sense to me than the "Power Ranger" GG suit.

"The costume is too good looking"

"The costume looks bad"

"The costume doesn't look realistic"

With a crappy costume.
