Animation Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal | Adult Swim

Yooooo, I was not expecting this. Now I'm wondering whether it'll be a full continuation or if Genndy Tartakovsky is gonna go with the anthology idea.

Pure speculation, but I think it will go anthology. If so, hopefully we get at least one episode featuring Spear and Mira's kid.

Watched the first season awhile back and I loved it. Still need to finish season 2.

Primal was renewed for Season 3 back at Annecy in 2023, nearly a full year after Season 2 debuted, and continued the story of Fang and Spear. There is no major news to drop at the festival this time around, though Tartakovsky confirmed that, "There will be news about it this year, but I don't know if they want me to talk about it before they actually release this. It's coming." When asked for clarification about exactly when he and Adult Swim could share more, he admitted that San Diego Comic-Con is a bit too early to expect anything, and more will be unveiled "Later this year." "No," he responded to the prospect of SDCC. "Maybe New York Comic-Con." This year's NYCC begins on October 9, which means there's still some hope for a release this year if there's a quick turnaround between the announcement and the release, but it's also just as likely that viewers won't be seeing Primal again until sometime in 2026.

Whether the series will continue following the young spear-wielder or lean more into an anthology format going forward remains to be seen, but it will once again see Tartakovsky team with Studio La Cachette for the animation. The veteran creator also teased that Season 3 once again raises the bar for what Primal is capable of on every level. Comparing it to his past hits like Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, and, of course, Samurai Jack, he shared his sense of pride in the process of how this vicious adult animated series came together, adding:

"It's a new level. Everything that we did in the first season, we upped a bit in the second season, and the third season is even more. I can't say anything without giving everything away, but it's just more, and it's shocking, and it's unstoppable. At some point, you're like, 'I can't believe I'm watching this.' Quality-wise, animation-wise, story-wise, emotionally, I don't want to oversell it, but rarely have I been proud of a project like this. At the end of the day, we'll have these 30 episodes, and thinking back to Dexter and Powerpuff Girls and even Samurai Jack, how much our quality wavered just because of the process and everything, this is just so solid. And to have 30 solid, incredible [episodes] for a modest budget, I'm really proud of it."

Spear just went full on Doom Slayer, oh s***.

I'm a bit... disappointed they went for Zombie Spear. I thought, as shocking as it was, his story ended greatly. I didn't want to see more of that, felt satisfied.

Also, Primal always tells very emotional and human stories, it's hard to picture a zombie leading it, but I'll trust Tartakovsky.

S02 elevated the show to such high quality for me, I'm not expecting less. Especially after 3 years of development.

I admit, I was hoping they’d go the anthology route, but I trust Tartakovsky that S3 will deliver!
