Well, I've been out of the loop for a couple of years, and I'm kind of lost. What's marvel writing these days that is really awesome?

I read a bunch of the Civil War stuff at the local B&N today, and it was really cool, and it sparked my interest in new marvel again (I usually just read the classics.)

I have ten bucks in my pocket for comics right now; I'd love to hear what I should buy and why.

Check your official recomendations thread, but I'm going to throw out Runaways, Initiative, Loners, and Exiles just to start with

I'll second the recommendations thread in the Misc Comics section as well.Monthlies aren't always the best place to jump on.

It all depends on what you want to read. There's so many genres and lots of depth in terms of content these days.

I'm actually just begining to read Runaways myself. I'm at this exact moment on #17 of the first volume.

And it's definitely recommended by me. One of Marvel's best titles, bar none.

Captain America (even though he's dead his book still rocks, go figure?)

Daredevil

Iron Fist

Avengers: Initiative

Well, I'd like to check out Runaways. People seem to love that.

What about the classic titles? Are any of the classic super heroes still good?

$10? Go to the comic book store and buy the last two issues of Avengers: The Initiative (since you liked CW, this is a good title to jump on if you go monthly). That leaves you 4 dollars, and I'd buy the $3.99 World War Hulk Prologue so you can jump on that event. Or, buy a Runaways digest.:o

do you like the X-men? If so Id suggest readong X-men. X-men 200 comes out next month and will be a good jumping point for that title. A big crossover is about to start this fall and you are just in time for it

If you want to buy TPBs:

Captain America - 25 issues of Brubaker awesomeness
She-Hulk - Two volumes of the most under-rated writer at Marvel, Dan Slott. Great, funny stuff.
Daredevil (starting with Brubakers first issues)
Hulk - Hulk kicking arse gladiator-style
Exiles - Claremont's on it now, but a great ride for 80 some issues. The first ones with Winnick were beyond great.

If you only have a few bucks to blow, get Hulk, and WW Hulk Prologue (as this is going to lead into the next "big event)

If you're not married to Marvel, you can't go wrong with Invincible, Walking Dead, or Fables.

It would be helpful to know what stuff you liked before you left.

if you want any advice on DC too I might have a few ideas depending on your interests

Again, there's really nothing confusing about that.

well not to long time readers mostly, but whose going to speak for people just picking up a Dc comic after many years.

Again, false. Take a look at Hippy Fascist. He never read DC before and he's now jumping on and loving it.

Fascist is one dude, give me the testimony of say 100 new readers. different people take in information differently, that would be like one black criminal being viewed as represetive of the the entire african american population in america.

Way to make an assumption.

I never said it was confusing (although it probably is to the average reader). What I said was that now might not be a good time to jump in. With 52 having just finished and Countdown just starting, that's a little daunting. That's a A LOT of back issues to pick up.

The MU on the other hand has a direct path right now, making a lot of the books easier to jump on without spending the cash on back issues.

tpbs you should check out...

Planetary Books 1 to 3
Authority Books 1 to 2
The American Way
The Golden Age
DC New Frontier

I jumped into DC and have no problem keeping track. There's this belief that none of the titles are readable to newbies with all this Countdown crap being so heavily tied into everything. Not true.Books like All Star Superman,Brave and the Bold,Detective Comics,Justice,JLA and JSA are all pretty on their own with the exception of the latter two which are tied together currently.

Plus,DC has tonnes of great TPBs on all the "classic" characters you speak of like Bats,Supes,GL,Green Arrow,Hawkman, etc.

Yup. Only idiots have trouble jumping in. You're not an idiot are you KC? I thought not. :)

Thor is supposed to be revamped big time coming in july 4th, should proove to be a pretty HOT 1st few issues.

Save your money and jump on the Dan Slott Spider-Man train. It's coming soon.

Dang...10 bucks only gets you three comics...if you're lucky and don't want a 3.50 or 3.99 comic, which is getting more frequent nowadays. It just seems, unlike in the 80's and 90's, that a reader would be hard pressed to buy a Marvel or DC comics without coming away confused.
