To be fair, if the first film had been more historically accurate, then I doubt that Commodus would have been nearly as interesting or memorable as a baddie, nor his death as satisfying. I mean I doubt that even Sir Ridley eye for visual directing and Hans Zimmer's epic score could make "Russell Crowe sneaks in and strangles a naked Joaquin Phoenix to death while he's sitting in the bath" seem epic (because that's how the real Commdus died).

Anyway, the idea of the sequel focusing on a different kind of character (in this case presumably an Emperor) has some potential I think, as long as it's also a different kind of conflict this time. Also perhaps it should be called something other than "Gladiator" as well.

I would expect a sequel to do the same, like in what I just mentioned just the basic concept of an empire in turmoil with multiple rulers until Severus rises to the purple and reunites it.

I would expect a sequel to do the same, like in what I just mentioned just the basic concept of an empire in turmoil with multiple rulers until Severus rises to the purple and reunites it.

If they set it up for a soldier Emperor to reign at the end of the film, than I kind of feel like the general emotional theme of the movie should be one of becoming disenfranchised with the Empire. Severus supposedly told his sons to be faithful to each other (didn't quite work out, since Caracalla killed his brother in front of their own mother), show love to the army, and scorn all other men, which is partly why Caracalla just continued the increasing division between the civilians and the military.

Since that would be thematically speaking the exact opposite of Marcus Aurelius's goals in Gladiator that Maximus wound up paying for, it would be perfectly set up as a tragic failure on the part of the Senate post-Commodus in the alternate history of Gladiator. Tragic enough to perhaps set up this sequel as a film about how the autocratic nature of the Empire lead to its inevitable decay and corruption.

And I'm salivating at the thought of a guy like Scott figuring out how to depict Rome slowly falling apart...

Chris Hemsworth and Russell Crowe 'in talks to co-produce Gladiator 2'

Russell Crowe and Chris Hemsworth have reportedly spent hours talking about the possibility of a Gladiator sequel and have been going over ideas for the script

Russell Crowe is said to be in talks with Chris Hemsworth to co-produce a sequel to Gladiator.
The actors have spent hours talking about the idea and going over ideas for the script, it's claimed.

Crowe starred in the first film, which made $400million worldwide and secured 11 Oscar nominations after its release in 2000, as the main character, Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Gladiator 2 has been rumoured since 2018 and is said to be set around 20 to 30 years on from the death of Crowe's character, Roman leader Maximus.

And it's now claimed Hemsworth could play Maximus' son in the second movie.

It was reportedly Chris' wife, Elsa Pataky, who suggested the idea.
A source told New Idea : "She's often joked they could easily pass off as father and son.
"Russell thinks he could be the only man to credibly play his son in a Gladiator sequel."

The duo have reportedly grown close during the filming of Thor: Love and Thunder in Sydney.
Chris and his wife attended a South Sydney Rabbitohs game with the Thor cast, including Crowe.

He joined production of the upcoming film back in January.

"Chris is in awe of Russell," the source added.
"He hangs off his every word and Russ has really taken him under his wing."
The Mirror has contacted reps for Russell Crowe and Chris Hemsworth for comment.

I know they also had a past relationship so maybe that could be the explanation; she hid the kid away because he was a bastard. That would line up with the timeline of the movie if Chris is playing the son (he could have been born about 10 years prior to the events of the first film).

Yeah, they can easily retcon that IF they want to. Besides, Lucius could just turn out to be Maximus’s if they really wanted to.

Yeah I could see them doing a retcon with that. But I think it would be better if you found out that she had a son with Maximus from their prior relationship together and he never found out. It would fit the story better since I don’t think Hems could pass for a 25-year-old.
