To be fair, if the first film had been more historically accurate, then I doubt that Commodus would have been nearly as interesting or memorable as a baddie, nor his death as satisfying. I mean I doubt that even Sir Ridley eye for visual directing and Hans Zimmer's epic score could make "Russell Crowe sneaks in and strangles a naked Joaquin Phoenix to death while he's sitting in the bath" seem epic (because that's how the real Commdus died).
Anyway, the idea of the sequel focusing on a different kind of character (in this case presumably an Emperor) has some potential I think, as long as it's also a different kind of conflict this time. Also perhaps it should be called something other than "Gladiator" as well.
