This thread is to discuss what should be in the fifth installment of the popular/controversial blood-soaked video game series, speculate on things and post any new updates regarding the game development.

Analyst: New Grand Theft Auto In Development

New, complete game will be coming in 2010 or 2011.

by Jim Reilly

July 14, 2009 - A new Grand Theft Auto game will be coming next year, reports industry analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities.

Pachter's latest reports say that Take-Two has been developing a new title in the series - not an expansion - for over a year and that the publisher plans to release the game next year or possibly 2011 at the latest.

"Management declined to state when the game will launch, but has confirmed to us that the game is in development, has been for over a year, and is using the same game "engines" as the last version," Pachter wrote.

"Management also told us that the team at Rockstar North is highly motivated to get the game out, and that the team understands that its highest payday will come from working on GTA instead of any other game. When we do the simple math, we conclude that the next installment is likely to be completed by some time in 2010, although given the frequency of game delays, it is not clear that it will necessarily come before October 31, 2010."

"However, it is clear to us that the next version of GTA will arrive before the end of [Fiscal Year 2011]," he added.

Alan Lewis, VP of corporate communications for Take-Two, declined to comment on the report saying: "We only provide comments on information released directly by the Company. It is our policy to not comment on speculation by the media or analysts.

What We Want from GTA V

Where next for Grand Theft Auto? We put together our wish-list for the next instalment.

by Martin Robinson

November 20, 2009 - The sun has set on Liberty City – The Ballad of Gay Tony marked the end of a saga that began with last year's Grand Theft Auto IV, and what a saga it was. From Niko to Johnny to Luis, Rockstar managed to wring an astounding amount of gameplay out of its magisterial metropolis, and it's with a heavy heart that we said our farewells last month.

But with one city down, we can't help but turn our minds to where Rockstar might take us next. Co-founder Dan Houser's recent comments suggest that the next game hasn't gone past incubation, though we find it hard to believe that the team haven't been working hard on the next step in their bread and butter series since they shipped number four out of the door last year.

And what can we expect? Well, for one it might not even be called GTA V, and we half expect that number to be reserved for the next generational leap in the series, something most likely tied into the next wave of hardware - which we'll likely be waiting on for some years now.

So the next instalment is likely to mirror the progression from GTA III to Vice City and onto San Andreas. But what direction will it take? With nothing more than the vaguest of teasers with which to base our musings, we can only cross our fingers and hope that this is what we see in the next GTA.

A Move to Europe

Some people have interpreted a supposed teaser that featured in the manual of Episodes from Liberty City to confirm this very fact, though we're less certain. We are, however, hopeful that the series shifts its sights away from the lampooning of the American Dream and towards the more difficult target of European culture.

It's not totally foreign territory for the series – a decade ago two expansion packs were released for the first Grand Theft Auto that took players to a cartoonish take of London in the swinging sixties. The new realism that fully blossomed in the fourth game would mean an approach far-removed from the high camp of the last attempt, but the idea of Rockstar turning its eye to London, Paris or Berlin is one that's wonderfully tantalising.

Back to the Past

GTA III was set in a contemporary Liberty City, the subsequent instalments evoking the eighties and nineties in turn with charm and precision. It's tempting to think that Rockstar will take GTA IV's engine on a similar journey, though the question is where to?

We'll rule out the thirties, forties and fifties – 2K have another little open world game that deals with that slice of history – and with the last two decades of the last century already claimed by Vice City and San Andreas it leaves but one option – the seventies. Tying in with our previous wish, a take on the Mafia-run Rome of the seventies would be delicious – think Romanzo Criminale but with more car chases.

That is, of course, assuming Rockstar wants to go somewhere new. They'd be forgiven for returning to past glories – after all, it worked in GTA IV – and an HD take on the neon-soaked world of Vice City would be welcomed by many – us included.

A Playground City

We'd never belittle the achievements of GTA IV, but in the short time since its release other games have shown that there can be other ways to exploit an open world. Ubisoft Montreal's Assassin's Creed II, in particular, gives players a series of cities that are elaborate climbing frames, and scaling its many heights is one of the game's most thrilling pleasures.

We're not asking for free-running in our next slice of GTA, but for a more flexible lead who's happier in clambering walls and who's given more free reign to explore the world around them, and someone who's nimble enough to make a chase on foot as exhilarating as a chase behind the wheel of a top-end car.

City Breaks

GTA IV's focus on a single city gave it a unique cohesiveness, but we'd love to see Rockstar cast the net further for its follow-up. Whether the RAGE engine can deal with the expanses served up in San Andreas is debatable, though the miracles being worked up in the epic-looking Red Dead Redemption suggest it's possible.
A larger area could also facilitate the return of something sorely missing from GTA IV – planes. But what's more exciting is another aspect that could return. GTA is an innately urban series, but as San Andreas proved Rockstar's just as comfortable when it turns its eyes to suburbia and beyond, and we'd love to go back to a countryside that's rendered with all the pomp that the current generation allows.

Offline Social Play

GTA IV bought the series kicking and screaming into the world of online multiplayer, and it was a move that was handled smoothly. As brilliant as they were, we can't help but feel that the natural habitat of the GTA player was neglected a little. GTA's most often played by groups of friends huddled around one television, and it is high-time this fact was acknowledged.

We're used to creating our own offline modes for the game – how many stars can you accumulate in under five minutes, how many jumps can you make before you die and who high can we get an ice-cream truck to jump – and it would be great if such feats were not only recognised but served by pass-the-controller play. San Andreas made a noble if ultimately flawed attempt to foster such an approach with its split-screen, and we hope GTA IV's successor can try something similar and pull it off.

Celebrity Voiceovers

While relative unknown Michael Hollick's turn as Niko Bellic helped create the series' greatest lead, a part of us misses the colourful roles of Vice City and San Andreas voiced by top talent such as Dennis Hopper, Samuel L Jackson and Ray Liotta – and not forgetting our own Danny Dyer, who lent his not considerable talents to the voice of 'Kent' Paul.
Ricky Gervais and to a lesser extent Frankie Boyle may have scratched that itch in GTA IV, but we'd love to see big names returning to the series and giving it the full-on Hollywood gravitas that the series truly deserves.

Turn the Series on its Head

So well established is the GTA series that it has now got its own readily identifiable archetypes - people such as Yusuf Amir, Playboy X and Brucie Kibbutz are from a cast from which countless characters have been moulded from in the series' past, and it would be great to see this set aside. The Ballad of Gay Tony's eponymous star was a step in the right direction, but why not really upset the form book and introduce a female lead?

Another way to flip the formula would be to put players on the other side of the law, taking charge of the police that are traditionally on your tail. A new perspective would be instantly refreshing, and offers the opportunity to introduce a series of new objectives. Which brings us neatly to...

Mission Variety

A common complaint about the series is the over-familiarity of the mission structure, which some believe can be boiled down to simply driving from point to point and disposing of a certain character. We wouldn't be so brutally reductive, and The Ballad of Gay Tony provided a wonderful blend of missions over its ten-hour lifespan.

But we would admit to wanting something substantially different for the next GTA, whether it's the full-blooded introduction of RTS-style gang warfare or new ways to wreck havoc – or indeed restore order if our previous wish is granted.

san andreas, please.

asian or latino main character, please.

A japanese character who's a Yakuza would be interesting.

Rockstar likes to be edgy. I say they should set the game near the US/Mexico border and you play as a Mexican drug runner.

I can't think of many things I would like to see improved. Just tighten up the combat some and it should be fine.

IV was my introduction to the series, but with that said, I do want to see something different with V. I've seen in other threads you guys mention a more spread out, possibly somewhat rural area, and I like that idea. IV gave me a reasonably realistic sandbox huge city to play around with, and I can go back to that anytime by popping IV back in. What I want in the next one is a more stretched out area. You can have cities, but I also want some woods and dirt roads to offroad in, a few smaller town areas. Just a general visually distinctive setting to IV.

Tho personally, and this is just me, I would like for it to stay in a more American or possibly European (England is more of what I'm thinking) setting. I find Japan, Italy, and various other culturally different settings like that very interesting, and like them in different games, but part of what I liked in IV was that it had a familiarity in it. That cars drove on the side of the road I'm used to, that signs, stores, and so on had a familiar feel as well.

So I guess overall I'm wanting more familiar settings, that is not just one large city splintered in 3 pieces. Story, characters, and so on, I'm fine as long as it's compelling. A Mexican drug ring (like mentioned above) sounds fun, I still like the idea of an undercover agent deal, a Yakuza memeber (also like mentioned above) sounds fun as well.

more variety. basically i want everything that was in san andreas, except more fleshed out in the current gen.

Here's are things I think should be improved upon or added:

-Ability to play online multiplayer with a buddy on the second PS3 joystick

-More multiplayer character customization

-Better hand-to-hand combat with easier to do combo's like Batman: Arkham Asylum (the combat in GTA IV was quite a improvement but the special combo was too difficult)

-More weapons like it was in GTA: Vice City, thought the amount of weapons were very toned down in GTA: San Andreas and GTA IV

-Ability to kill or become enemies or befriend with any major character you choose to and it should effect the outcome of the end

-Ability of texting to talk to characters/people on the street with voice-over's coming out of whatever you're texting (like PlayStation Home texting but with protagonist voice-over)

-Bring back the home invasion from San Andreas

-Choice to either just live with normal job or become a criminal or become a cop or become a hero in the story or become a villain in the story

-Cinematic on foot camera and on foot slow-motion camera

continuing with what i want:

-more variety in homes to buy and the return of garages for vehicles
-more variety of vehicles!
-more clothes!
-larger map; i know they want to keep it dense with stuff to do but a larger map and more variety would be nice.

A japanese character who's a Yakuza would be interesting.

Yeah, a Yakuza/long haired/mustache warrior type-looking character would be cool and immigrate him to 1970's setting Detroit or someplace in Europe. Or they could go for a Clint Eastwood-type Vietnam ex-soldier.

I agree with these. Plus they should add new things that the upcoming Red Dead Redemption game will have.

I don't want a larger map unless they have a story to back it up (which San Andreas did not). If we are going to see multiple cities I want to explore every potential within those cities. While SA gave us three major American cities, we barely touched the surface of any of them.

Just assuming they go with San Andreas (I personally would prefer Vice City but just for the sake of this conversation)...

For Los Santos I want to see more than just the "gangsta," subculture. I want to do drug runs and silent battered girlfriends for some Charlie Sheen-esque actor. I want to work for the Jewish Mafia. I want to help an athlete cover up his ex-wife's murder. I want to start a race riot. I want to work for drug peddling plastic surgeons and blow up abortion clinics. I want a full play on all the shady crap that comes with LA. Not just the gang wars of the 90s and rap subculture.

For San Fierro, we should've been able to work for crazed enviromentalist who has no problem killing humans to protect animals. I want to use a sniper rifle to assassinate opponents of a crazed Nancy Pelosi-esque politican who is trying to stand in the way of her gun reform bill. The gay rights movement needs to be played upon!

And then Las Venturas, for goodness sakes!!! This city was based on Vegas! Imagine the crazy **** they can do by playing on Vegas' long and corrupt history. Instead all we got in SA was a casino robbery and a couple missions for Leone.

My point is, IMO, San Andreas was nothing more than wasted potential where despite having three great cities to spoof, all we got was a satire of Boyz 'n the Hood. If they are going to use multiple cities, they need to make sure they can do those cities justice. Otherwise, stick to one really good city instead of a few mediocre ones.

Also, I like a few of IGN's ideas. Celebrity voices would definitely be welcomed back warmly in my opinion, and I like the idea of playing as a corrupt cop. There are countless of them in the GTA-verse, we should be able to see their side of the story. Even if you leave the force at some point, it would be an interesting character to play as.

i totally agree, but i think san andreas was less a missed opportunity and more a product of the limitations of the last generation of console gaming.

if rockstar wants to push it, they can utilize san andreas by cutting a lot of the vast open areas and make each part of the city densely populated with lots of things to do. also, if they aren't lazy, they can make storylines to work with each spot; love your ideas.

i just think san andreas, if done right, has easily the most potential for not only a lot of good plot lines, but also extremely varied settings/environs and gameplay.

MY GTA 5 wishlist...

1. More vehichles. San Andreas was the best in terms of vehicle variety. You had Cars, motorcycles, bicycles, boats, planes, helicopters, swamp runners and even jetpacks! GTA4 was a let down in this department.

2. Character and vehicle customability. In San Andreas your character looked how you wanted him to. Big, small, fat, or skinny. He could look clean cut or gangster. It's sad that Saints Row lends more the customization of your characters and vehicles than any GTA game to date.

3. Better soundtrack. Vice City had the best. Everything since has been a major letdown.

4. Bring back the celebrities! I can't think of a better villain in the GTA series than Officer Tinpenny and all the credit goes to Samuel L. Jackson. And Ray Liotta rocked as Tommy V.

And Matt, San Andreas is the best in the series hands down, with GTA4 behind it. Your assesment of the game is rather off point considering it was the most detailed and expansive game to date and it features the best storyline to date. Using you logic, Vice City was a satire of Miami Vice and GTA4 was a bad satire of Scarface.

i agree that i thought san andreas had the best story and was my favorite. i just loved how you could even customize your car in the autoshop or work out and customize how you looked. i don't like saint's row create a player, but rather much prefer san andreas' set main character but with a very customizable appearance.

agree with everything except i think san andreas had a pretty nice soundtrack, too.

I would love a GTA game set in the 70's, in a San Francisco style city (San Fierro? Is that what it was called?) and have you play as a recently disgraced police officer, and have it deal with police corruption and drug running. I think there could be a heap of potential in that, to play of both the humour and the grittiness of the 70's (think Dirty Harry). Also, considering the mood is that this should be a spiritual sequel to vice city, in the same way that GTA 4 was a spiritual sequel to GTA 3, I think that would work.

GTA: VC was more Scarface than Miami Vice.

Matt is spot on with his assessment of SA. SA gave you this super expansive but completely hollow area to explore. Thats the reason they did what they did with GTA IV.

I actually thought that GTA IV had the most original story.

Two more things should be added to GTA V:

-Building damage when throwing explosives and firing rocket launcher
-Better burn effect when throwing Molotov cocktail's, no blacked out normal body but detailed ghastly corpse

I like the idea of playing as a corrupt cop.

Yeah, I would like to play as a breaking-the-rules type cop like Dirty Harry but has the reputation of being corrupt and get's fired many times. There should be a option of trying to continue police work or turn to crime.

SA is my least favorite GTA game. Meh story and too many ill-implemented RPG elements. It was expansive, but very empty.

1. GTAIV
2. Vice City
3. GTA3
4. San Andreas

For the next game, I want a female protagonist. I also agree with IGN about the main character being more agile and able to get around smoother.

All I want is a main character that isn't a whiney **** and a more interesting supporting cast. Niko got on my ****ing nerves.

That would be interesting, but if that does happen, i wont play the next GTA. Guess im sexist, but i have no desire to control a female in the GTA universe.

You gentlemen hit the nail on the head.

1. GTAIV
2. Vice City
3. GTA3

I'd flop Vice City and IV, just because I think Vice City is far more fun, but aside from that, I agree.

I don't think we'll see a female protagonist. The key demographic for this game is teenage to twenty-something males. They aren't going to make a main character who will alienate at least half of that demographic.
