Ive been hating on this movie since the first trailer. Didn't think it looked good at all, I liked the idea but the trailers made it look not good to me. Well I was wrong, this was effin great. It is 90 minutes of on the edge of your seat thrilling action. I will say though, I wish it was someone else besides Bullock but that's mostly because my general dislike for her. I just don't think she's a very good actress and this movie didn't change my mind. Anyways, yeah its really great and I'm pretty sure if you saw it in iMax you may die from intenseness. 9/10

If Gravity doesn't break the fall opening weekend record, the film will have amazing legs. I think it could easily do a 3-4x multiplier, at the least.

I think it can do $40M for the weekend but not enough for $50M.

We'll have to see. If the WOM is terrific tomorrow, I think the Saturday shows will get an uptick (and Sunday won't drop off as much). And there's no serious competition for this pic, and I think the legs would be terrific.

Like I said, if it doesn't break the fall opening record -- it'll certainly be one of the highest-grossing ones. If it follows a trajectory similar to Avatar or the original Star Wars (unlikely) -- a $400M domestic cume would be in order.

I think a final cume of $120M-$150M domestic is much more feasible. $200M domestic would be the ceiling.

Word of mouth should be extremely good for this movie.

I kind of wish this was Christmas release to see how leggy it could be.

Just got home from seeing this.

Honestly mesmerising, brilliant filmmaking. This is film at it's best. Second favourite film of the year for me. Refreshing to see a space film without sound in space for once in a while. Fantastic pacing, relentless exhausting action.

4.5/5

AMAZING! 5/5

I don't think its going to make any money though. The average moviegoers seem to think it looks really stupid. I saw it in a fairly empty IMAX 3D theater. My non-cinephile friends all think it looks stupid. I hope I'm wrong and it does well. Word of mouth could definitely give it some B.O. legs.

9.5/10

Pros:
One of the greatest popcorn adventure thrillers in history.

Should win Oscars for direction, cinematography, editing, special effects, music, sound mixing, sound

Cons:

Nitpicking: Good enough characters but nothing ground breaking in terms of character development.

Like Liam_H said, what's crazy about the usually misleading RT % is the average score.
And it's actually gone up a bit since he said that.
Looking forward to my off day, Monday. $10.50 IMAX LieMAX 3D.
How I wished for a non 3D showing...

Is this basically just Open Water, but in space?

Open Water doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Gravity.

I wish our theater had a non-3D show, but all the reviews are raving about how Gravity looks stunning in 3D (and it'd lose out in 2D).

Unless you physically can't watch 3D, it makes you sick/dizzy etc. The movie looks great in 3D, really adds to the immersion factor. I say that as someone who actively avoids it.

This isn't out in the UK for over a month :csad:

I can usually stand 3D if forced to see it. Last time it gave a headache though. I'm hoping that was just the symptoms of a long day.

Doubtful, I get headaches too from watching 3D. The 3D is good in Gravity, however I don't think it's required to watch the movie.

Its not necessary but it does add to the experience. Well at least I think it does, since both times I saw it was in 3D so no way to compare it to 2D. However, nothing ever felt like it got too dark or blurry. Also things aren't constantly flying in your face to scare you, its more about the surrounding.

Ugh. That sucks, jmc. That was the first time I'd actually gotten a headache during 3D... And I'm about to get my first prescription for glasses soon. So maybe it finally got to me. I'll have a better idea Monday.
I've gotta see it on the biggest screen possible, so avoiding 3D isn't an option this time.

Because Open Water had a story...and is actually somewhat plausible, seeing as how its based on a true story?

Saw this movie today and I thought it was a well done movie. I thought the cinematography was great and seeing it in 3D made it just that more better. I'm not usually a Sandra Bullock fan, but she did a fine job with her part(plus she looked very sexy in short hair).
The only draw back to the movie imo, was the story it felt a little linear and predictable. To me what could of made it better
was doing maybe a little flash back or two of Ryan's(SB) character; especially a back round of her child dying, not just talking about it. I thought the part where she made it to the Russian station and she was just cradled up, would of been a good point for that flash back of her kid. I just think that would of gave the movie and Sandra's character more sympathy. On a side note, I'm usually a George Clooney fan, but he didn't really impress me in this.

That's what it looks like to me and that's why I'll be waiting for Netflix. All I hear are people proclaiming the visuals, and they are damn good, but it sounds like that's all this film has going for it.

Never seen Open Water but is your idea of this movie, just two people floating in space waiting to be rescued? Cause its not. They have specific actions they do to try and accomplish their goals.

It was a good idea to cast Bullock because a lot of people that wouldn't normally watch this will see it now. Unknowns wouldn't have given it any kind of boost amongst the mainstream public.
