Because Open Water had a story...and is actually somewhat plausible, seeing as how its based on a true story?

Story? Open's Water was equally light on story, I'm not going to pretend Gravity is this deeply emotional piece of screenwriting, but the difference is in its execution. So yeah, Open Water isn't in the same ball park as Gravity, it's not even playing the same sport.

That's what it looks like to me and that's why I'll be waiting for Netflix. All I hear are people proclaiming the visuals, and they are damn good, but it sounds like that's all this film has going for it.

My friend, you will be doing yourself a disservice by watching this movie on Netflix.

It was a good idea to cast Bullock because a lot of people that wouldn't normally watch this will see it now. Unknowns wouldn't have given it any kind of boost amongst the mainstream public.

Oh yep. People love Sandra Bullock. And you never see her in a film like this.

Exactly, America's sweetheart floating about up in space + stunning visuals and short run time = asses in seats.

I think the actresses that turned it down, like Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie, are kicking themselves right now.

I wonder if Bullock will get another Oscar nomination for this role? I haven't gotten a chance to see it yet, but Buzz Aldrin and James Cameron both loved it and I trust their opinions in this area. I'll see it next weekend.

Is this the kind of movie both high brow and low brow audiences can enjoy?

I know it would be better to see it on the big screen but I still have mixed feelings about it.

Why? It's gotten almost universally rave reviews, stars two great actors, and several real-life astronauts have said that they love it. What exactly is there to be "mixed" about?

Honestly, if the glowing reviews aren't enough to convince you then you're probably better off not watching the film at all because it's a film that's meant to be seen in all it's glory in the cinema, anything below that will never do the film justice.

To answer you both...I haven't read any of the reviews yet. The movie was off my radar so I never got around to going to Rottentomatoes.com

98% with a 9.1 rating average.

Wouldn't expect it to, seeing as OPEN WATER cost $500,000 to make, and GRAVITY cost $80 million.

This is the most powerful cinematic experience I have ever had.

I'll actually agree with this statement. It's one of the better visual appealing movies that I've seen in a long time, and the 3D made it top notch.
This is a movie you should at least see on the big screen for first viewing, before seeing it on dvd( I guess if u have a 60+ inch tv it be good for first viewing).

This movie was a supreme showcase of spectacle on both the visual and sonic front! For those who think it's just about amazing visuals, it's not. Yes the visuals were amazing - not from a technical perspective necessarily, but just the sheer immersiveness of putting the audience into space as well. It absolutely and totally felt like I was in space and experiencing everything along with Sandra Bullock. And the shots of Earth were just absolutely stunning.

I have to give the sound supreme kudos as well - there was a Dolby Atmos ad before the movie about how it uses speakers in the ceiling (!), and the sound in the movie indeed came from all directions, including from above! The movie also made use of appropriate sound levels with respect to distance, along with silence, as already mentioned. Not hearing explosions in space was definitely new and awesome.

And the movie was just flat-out intense. It made space look scary too and not like a place that most people would want to be in. ;) In the same way that Life of Pi made me fear the ocean, Gravity made me fear space....

Overall I have to give this movie the most kudos for being the first scientifically-accurate movie set in space! For once, it was an intelligent movie that didn't cheap out on any of the science (physics primarily, of course) and it was amazing to watch and listen to. Highly recommend that folks see this on the largest screen possible that also has the Dolby Atmos speaker system - because the sound was equally amazing! No home theater in the world is going to produce sound like the Dolby Atmos that I experienced!

I'll admit that the trailers didn't sell me on the movie either, and I only went to see it because of all the highly positive reviews. But now I'm a huge fan of this movie. Definitely one of the best of the year for the sum of its visuals + sound + scientific accuracy + intensity + filmmaking style.

I would say if there's one movie to see in theaters its this one. The huge screen, darkness of the theater really helps the immersion

I laughed hard when she used the fire extinguisher because of Wall E. Also chuckled when its said Clooney is on his last mission. Right away I thought yep he's dead.

This is the most powerful cinematic experience I have ever had.

This was my experience too. Can't remember the last time I didn't see anyone in the theater on their cell phones during a film.

This was an experience...One word to describe: Magnificent.

10/10

I just saw it...and it was glorious. To second what others have said, magnificent.

Very tense, edge of your seat with a subtle dash of minimal comic relief. Clooney nearly stole the show imo. I absolutely loved his wise yet wise-cracking, father-figure role. However, I have a brand new sense of respect for Sandra Bullock. It's not very often you can watch a film and an actor/actress and completely forget WHO you are watching. She truly became someone else.

And for the record, Alfonso Cuaron and Neill Blomkamp now own science fiction.

Jesus H. Cthulhu.....this movie was amazing.

I absolutely loved this movie. It was visually beautiful, intense, and had lots of heart. Hard to imagine any movie topping this one as my favorite 2013 film.

Loved both Bullock and Clooney. Clooney was his charismatic self and Bullock made a character that was vulnerable to being annoying likable. I don't think any of the other ones linked to this role could've done it better than she did IMO.

The score and cinematography were all sorts of amazing as well.

I can't explain why but I totally choked up at that part where Ryan was describing her daughter to Matt and telling him what to tell her.

Anyone else thought she won't make it? I thought it was possible that she wouldn't.

After [BLACKOUT]she came out of her hallucination I would say no. If she was going to die and they wanted that type of ending it would have been there. Not after she has a renewed sense of life.[/BLACKOUT]

I been thinking about seeing this but the trailers really don't impress me. A movie about Sandra Bullock floating in space talking to herself for an hour is just very meh to me. But I might go check it out tomorrow at early afternoon showing. Hopefully the hype and word of mouth is good.
