I been thinking about seeing this but the trailers really don't impress me. A movie about Sandra Bullock floating in space talking to herself for an hour is just very meh to me. But I might go check it out tomorrow at early afternoon showing. Hopefully the hype and word of mouth is good.

The word of mouth is excellent, and the movie is playing well with older audiences too. In fact, the percentage of folks that went to the movie in the past two days (at my theater) have been 50+ and older (around 60%), while 40% are younger.

It's the kind of audience that made Argo a crossover hit (whatever you thought of Argo, it had great legs). Frankly, I'm not surprised that WB moved it to October. They expect it to be a bigger hit.

Just got back. This is EASILY the movie of the year for me. I'll be shocked if anything else manages to top it. From the visuals to the acting to the score...it was all just perfect. And yeah, I cried. I'd give it a 10/10, and I do not give that score lightly.

It was indeed awe inspiring, it's visually unlike no space film. Many of the scenes felt like it was one continuing shot. I honestly don't want to know how it was made because it really did feel like you were in space. Story wise it was pretty straightforward, but Bullock and Clooney's performances made it worth investing.

This is crazy. I better stop reading until Monday. Trying not to overhype the movie for myself.

Oh and I forgot to mention, the score was incredible.

Quickest 90 minutes I've ever had at a movie theater.

It truly was, the music from when [BLACKOUT]Ryan stops hallucinating all the way to the end[/BLACKOUT] gave me chills the first time I saw it.

Engaging experience but I expected a more thought provoking or substance filled story rather than cause and effect plot from all the word of mouth/review scores.
Experience and vfx alone didn't save avatar.

Curious to see how the oscars treat this one. No doubt will win a bunch of tech awards. Might just be the best reviewed film of the year too, time will tell.

Also curious who's on the list of actresses that passed up on this one, that stuff always gives me a curious itch.

Great film, probably the best I've seen so far this year. It's very unique. It's not really story driven per se, it's not really character driven, it truly is as Kane put it a survival film. It is more about the emotion and tension in space, how dangerous it is. It is a visual masterpiece for sure, the music is stunning. The performances are what they need to be, it's not a film to focus on characters really. But truly an experience to be hold.

Totally agreed. The score did some serious damage to my emotions. Made me choked up at the emotional parts and made me nervous at the intense scenes.

On the top of my head, the ones linked to this at some point or another were: Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Marion Cotillard, Blake Lively (), Scarlett Johansson, Carey Mulligan

I believe Naomi Watts was considered as well, because I remember the two I was rooting for were her and Cotillard. Bullock ended up being a great choice, though. I feel like her patented brand of "every woman" relatability was pretty essential to connecting emotionally with Dr. Stone.

I also thought she made the character likable (and relatable like what you said) when it's so easy for the character to end up being annoying.

I would've love to see Scarlett Johansson in the part for those [BLACKOUT]underwear scenes[/BLACKOUT]. :ninja::hrt:

I'm imagining her in her sexy husky voice doing all the screaming (especially the "No! Nooooo!") throughout the movie and it's making me laugh. I'm a chick though so I don't know if you guys would actually find that hot instead of funny. :hehe:

Oh, totally hot. I don't care what anyone says. :ninja:

I'm surprised the likes of Johansson, Lively, or even Portman were considered. It seemed like Stone was intended to be an older character, closer to Clooney's age.

I think Rachel Weisz would have been an excellent choice.

Agreed.

I thought Hathaway was one of the names. Would have made for an "interesting" performance, especially the self motivational speech parts.

Hollywood would have loved Lawrence in this this, not sure I would have though.

Robert Downey Jr turned down the Clooney role twice...I clearly could see RDJ play Kowalski. However Clooney did a great job, also Bullock was perfect in that role as Stone.

I don't think RDJ would have done very well with it IMO. He is seen as such a goofball at times and comes off as it. Especially imagining some of the "funnier" lines of Gravity I think may have broken the situation and fear that you felt during all those scenes. I think Clooney brought some of the charm/slight humor, but in reality had this calm stoic like presence. I think that worked better then RDJ's over whelming charisma.

I would look at this movie as a survival story, rather than something overly complicated or thought-provoking. Sometimes, simple plotting works best.
