Holmes films before the end of this year I'm pretty sure. And did they say they start filming this in January? Because we all know The Avengers starts filming then.

Wasn't he supposed to start shooting Sherlock Holmes in december ?
And if i'm not mistaken RDJ would start shooting Gravity this fall. COnsidering that his role is relatively small for this movie , he should'be finished in time for Holmes.

With the choice of lead role for Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Castaway in space’ film Gravity hinging to a great degree on a bankability index, it’s something of a surprise that Sandra Bullock’s name didn’t come up as a serious first-pick choice until now. With Warner Bros. reportedly nervous about the idea of an $80m sci-fi film in which one actress is the only person on screen for much of the time, turning to Bullock seems like a no-brainer.
The state of things is this: Alfonso Cuarón reportedly wants Natalie Portman, has made an offer to her, and would be willing to cut the budget of the film to make it with Portman and (budget cut notwithstanding) do it on his own terms. Portman’s work in Black Swan was a real selling point and set Cuarón’s mind firmly on Portman. Her decision on the film is expected any day now.
But CinemaBlend says that WB is much more keen on Sandra Bullock, recently called the ‘most powerful actress in Hollywood,’ and one that has been very picky about roles in the wake of her Oscar win. She’s only set up the Stephen Daldry adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close so far.

Question is: would the audience that Bullock draws to films like The Blind Side show up to Gravity? You’d have to think that the same people that loved seeing her be tough but compassionate in The Blind Side would go for her space-bound struggle to return to Earth in a big way. But something that looks like a genre project could still be a question mark. WB is probably right to think that Bullock is a better sell regardless than Portman, but perhaps Inception stands as ample proof that if Cuarón and his cast can knock this out of the park and WB can apply appropriate marketing muscle, it won’t matter in the end.
Gravity is scheduled to shoot in January, after having been pushed back from a fall shoot when Cuarón had trouble casting the lead. (After Angelina Jolie passed twice, for example.) Robert Downey, Jr. remains locked for the smallish supporting male role, and his schedule is more than a casual factor affecting the calendar for the film.
Gravity was written by Cuarón’s 28-year-old son, Jonás (The Shock Doctrine). The $80 million film is a contemporary survival thriller that follows a woman as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes. Because it’s set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity. Downey Jr will start production on Gravity in January, leave to shoot Sherlock Holmes 2, and then return to finish with Cuarón. Sherlock 2 is scheduled to hit theaters for Christmas 2011, so we can probably expect to see Cuarón’s film in 2012.

I've never been a fan of Bullock at alll; really hope she doesn't get cast.

sandra bullock is very over rated (though not as much as Jolie),im not saying she wouldnt be able to pull this off but im much more of a fan of natali portman.

It's weird how the age difference is so radical between the choices. From the young (Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansonn, and Blake Lively), 30s (Jolie, Marion Cotillard) to the 40s (Sandra Bullock). crazy.

i knew that her oscar will bring more trouble then good. yes she is a BO draw for comedies. but now they think tha they can market the movie with '' from the oscar winnger Bullock'' ? masses are not that naive to run to the theater.

if WB was having faith in the project of Watchmen then i dont see why not with Gravity.

Bullock? To hell with that.

Yeah I noticed that as well, I guess the kid's age must be set at 5 or something.

Personally I love Sandra Bullock but I'm not sure she is suited to this.

Because one is marketable and part of the most popular movie genre there is, and the other isn't.

everyone with common sense knew that Watchmen was not going to make a lot money at the BO. even WB.

IMO

I think Sandra CAN DO IT but she doesn't appeal to me.

Funny enough, if it's Sandra Bullock ala 1993/1994 (Speed, Demolition Man), I wouldn't mind her.

Yes but you could still market it as something that people would want to see, even if they didn't want to see it again, plus given the success of the genre it's hardly surprising that WB felt it might break even at least.

I'm actually a fan of Bullock but can see both the positive and negative potential with her casting.

Like INCEPTION WB once again here have a big budget sci-fi movie derived from an original script which isn't conventionally sellable and as a result clearly want the leading role to go to a bonafide A-lister/box office draw (hence the numerous attempts to snag Jolie). We can say that there are no box office draws anymore but that isn't entirely accurate and the studio know this or Portman, Lively, ScarJo etc would be on board already.

The issue, if there is one, is that the whole situation is an unfortunate example of studios being unwilling to give actresses on the rise, or those in need of a career boost like Rachel Weisz or Naomi Watts, a credible starring role in a tentpole which isn't a 'woman's movie'. If GRAVITY had a male lead with it's budget the studio, if failing to find a big A-list star, would have willingly taken a 'lesser' name with the ease that's eluding them in this process. They just don't want to make female stars anymore.

WB had faith in INCEPTION and yet according to Jeff Robinov they specified to Nolan that the lead had to be played by a bonafide movie star touting names such as Brad Pitt and Will Smith . Chris chose Dicaprio but only under those strict guidelines he couldn't just choose ANYONE.

Inception was a 200 million movie. this will be under 100 .

It is being made for $80m. That's still alot of money to any studio and the budget is exactly why the studio are holding out ideally for a big name.

Eeehh no to Bullock. As much as i like her as a person and actress m i just don't think she has the dramatic chops for such a movie.
So what if she won an Oscar. That doesn't mean that she's able to handle this movie nor is she bankable.

I prefer Portman or Weisz

Eh? Bullock is far more bankable than Portman or Weisz.

maybe he will just have to make a commercial movie that will make a huge profit and then jump into Gravity.

better like this then to make 100 compromises and then 20 years later be angy that he didnt make hes 100% vision.

bythe way it pisses me of that in hollywood an actress like Bullock could get 10 millions out of the 80mil budget.

insaneeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Portman is a good choice, hopefully the negotiations goes through so they can move on with the production.

I'm wondering when and how RDJ is going to shoot his scenes for this movie. SHerlock Holmes sharts shooting next week and i think Avengers starts filming early next year.

If the negotiations goes through with Portman I could see Gravity prepping for a shooting in the summer of 2011, if not that maybe WB could probably push the shooting forward to autumn, is possible considering that this movie doesn't have a release date. RDJ should be done for SH2 around in march and maybe half way done with The Avengers by then.
