Robert Downey Jr. Exiting 'Gravity?'
By MIKE FLEMING | Monday October 25, 2010 @ 2:31pm EDT

EXCLUSIVE: I'm hearing scheduling problems have made Robert Downey Jr. suddenly doubtful for Gravity, the Alfonso Cuaron-directed Warner Bros space film that weathered a bunch of setbacks before finding its footing when it landed Sandra Bullock for the lead female role. Now, Warner Bros is denying Downey will exit, despite what I'm hearing. The studio is saying they expect to work out the scheduling problems, and executives certainly have access to Downey at the moment because he's junketing the Todd Phillips-directed Due Date. I'm also hearing that Bullock is among those lobbying him to stay. A Downey exit is a blow: just wait until you see what he brings to Due Date. But it's not necessarily fatal, because he was playing a supporting part.

The majority of the 3D film scripted by Cuaron and his son Jonas is definitely carried by the actress in a manner comparable to Tom Hanks's solo performance in Cast Away. The film's heroine is a space station team member hellbent on finding her way back to earth and her daughter, after the station is destroyed by a debris field from an exploded asteroid. A big fan of Cuaron, Downey signed on early to play her co-pilot and the only other survivor of the asteroid mishap; both happened to be away in a space ship when the blast hit. Downey was juggling about three weeks of work around his other considerable commitments. First, he was going to shoot Gravity and then start Sherlock Holmes 2. Uncertainty over the actress changed that, and he was going to start Sherlock Holmes 2, break to do Gravity, and then return to England. But these delays have taken a toll for Downey, who needs to focus soon on The Avengers, and then Iron Man 3. I will tell you more when I have it.

Bummer if it doesn't work out.

I figured this would happen actually. I'd like to see him in this. Because I'm not as interested in seeing Bullock carry this film like Hanks did brilliantly in Cast Away. She's an adequate enough actress but nowhere near in the same league as Hanks.

they will lose a good actor because they can not get an actress with an oscar nomination or an oscar from the last 2 years.

hollywood..................

No, it's not that. It's scheduling conflicts -- Cuaron and WB were busy courting actresses left and right that have chemistry with RDJ. By the time they locked Bullock in as the lead, RDJ was already shooting Sherlock Holmes 2 and doing press for Due Date.

If the studio can find a sufficient hole in RDJ's schedule between SH2 and Avengers for him to do Gravity, he'll stay on. If not, he'll leave the project and the studio will have to find another supporting actor.

If RDJ leaves, Cuaron can always cast... I don't know, maybe Jeffrey Dean Morgan? He looks like RDJ's older twin brother.

His face is probably not the reason RDJ got cast

I don't mind, it really sounded to me like RDJ was going to get killed off early. And I don't want to see RDJ get killed off early.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to be one of those films that has everything go wrong for it?

Robert Downey Jr. Leaves 'Gravity' But 'Knows How to Talk to Girls'
November 17, 2010
Source: Heat Vision
by Ethan Anderton

As was previously mentioned as a possibility, Heat Vision reports Robert Downey Jr. has officially dropped out of Alfonso Cuaron's sci-fi film Gravity. But as one project loses the talent of Downey, another is fortunate to pick it up. Apparently the actor is circling an adaptation of a book written by a 9-year old boy. How to Talk to Girls, an advice book on how to deal with women, started off as a school project for the young Alec Greven, but a publishing deal and three more books shows this is more than just child's play. Though a draft was previously written, the project is now being developed as a future vehicle for Downey.

It's not clear how a book written by a kid will translate to a film without simply being a hollow cinematic shell of the book itself, but that's Hollywood for you. Ben Karlin and Stu Zicherman wrote the first draft of the script, but Susan Downey (the actor's wife and producing partner) will oversee the hiring of a writer along with producer Shawn Levy (director of Night at the Museum) who has said he wanted to turn this into a comedy similar to Big. Okay, now this is starting to make a little more sense.

Of course, the sources for this story are careful to point out that he's only considering the project right now and he's not guaranteed to star in it (after all, he just left another project in which he was attached to star). The project sounds interesting, but Downey is a busy guy, so I'm willing to bet he only ends up producing this one. Disney is still planning on Downey being able to shoot Oz: The Great and Powerful next summer, but with The Avengers production getting closer and closer, time is running out.

This film is looking more and more doomed with each piece of news.

I think Cuaron should put the film on hold for the moment, and do something else.

No RDJ means no more interest for me. Bullock can't hold me to a screen.

I'm not surpised this happened. Anyway with no RDJ this has lost me a bit. I'm still interested in what I read about it technically and Cauron directing, but jeez, you can't help but feel bad for this guy. I mean he's directed one of the greatest films ever, and this **** is happening to him?

**** it. Just get Clive Owen.

I've been excited for this movie since I heard about the opening take that's gonna be like 20 minutes long. Extended takes are pretty much my favorite.

Clive Owen has become the go-to guy for this type of thing. Him and Gerard Butler. Need an action star but can't quite get who you want? Here we go.

Eh Im kinda glad RDJ is off this (sorry, I know everyone seems to love him right now).
It shouldn't be too hard a role to fill.

Not bad, not bad... but Bullock in it doesn't inspire alot of confidence.
