She may be hurtling but they are trained to stay calm throughout no matter what happens. Yeah its a ridiculously terrifying situation but panicing doesn't help. Also you can slow yourself down and change momentum using your body, theyre mostly taught that as well.
Bullock is playing a scientist on her first mission in outer space. Panicking is normal in a situation where your space shuttle is destroyed and youre hurtling deep into space and youre only help is in the form of an astronaut who's in the same boat as you are.

Besides, it seems as if she gets her bearings later on and maybe saves herself.

i will slap yo dumb asses.

This film is getting very good reviews coming out of TIFF.

Slashfilm takes a one minute paragraph break from their praise of the film with this comment, which is odd and leaves me wondering what they could be referring to:

I’d like to dispose with the few minor complaints I had while watching, and then we can move on the mountain of aspects I loved. On the negative side, a bit of Bullock’s Dr. Stone portrayal was slightly uneven, in terms of writing and character development (not her performance). There are parts of Dr. Stone that simply could not be legitimate. I won’t say any more for fear of spoiling what should be a fun time, but a couple of logic issues cropped up every so often.

^ Yeah, how exactly is that supposed to work in a vacuum?

Walter Chaw gave it 2.5 out of 4. Says it works great as spectacle.

FilmSchoolRejects gives the film an A- which is pretty high for them.

Their summation

The Upside: An absolute technical marvel in every way possible – from cinematography to special effects to sound design to score, all of Gravity’s technical parts work together in perfect harmony for maximum effectiveness when it comes to both the look and the feel of the film.

The Downside: Bullock and Clooney both turn in solid performances, but their failure to truly transcend keep the film from reaching perfection. In any other film, however, their performances would be far from a liability. As is, “not quite transcendent performances” isn’t a bad problem for any film to have.

On the Side: Angelina Jolie was the original first choice for the lead role. Natalie Portman was the second choice after Jolie turned the part down, but she too had to pass on the role.

Kind of an odd comment to make about the acting. So far even the worst reviews and criticisms that I've seen lobbed at the film really aren't even bad or just kind of seem like the reviewer is going out of their way to temper their praise a little bit.

i don't see why the acting note is odd. he thought the performances were fine but not great. that's perfectly valid. i'd be more wary of a review that was nothing but positive exclamation points across the board.

Oooh that makes sense why she is freaking out. The trailer for this did nothing for me but the onslaught of tv spots have gotten me very excited

I suck at writing reviews so I'm not going to. Saw this at a screening and highly enjoyed it. Spectacular visuals.

It'll definitely be number one that weekend unless a horror movie is opening alongside it.

Movie might not open too big but I can certainly see it having really good legs.

The only major horror release for the rest of the year is Carrie, which opens a few weeks after this.

People that have expressed thoughts on it being boring because it looks like Bullock floating in space for an hour while contemplating on the meaning of life. Not so. This movie very much moves and slows down to pace it out when it needs to. I would describe it as survival thriller if that even is a category.

The movie Buried featured Ryan Reynolds stuck in a coffin and buried in the ground, and the ENTIRE movie took place inside that box, yet it was one of the most intense movies that I've ever seen. Gravity features two characters hurdling out of control through Space, the description alone sounds intense.

I just saw an advanced screening of this a couple of hours ago and HOLY MOLY! What a great movie! Cuaron should be nominated for every award possible come Oscar season.

I disagree so much with that review about Bullock and Clooney's performance. They were awesome, especially Bullock. This movie is so unlike anything she's ever done so far in her career and she really knocked it out of the park.

I need to see it again.

It really does need to be seen on the big screen, especially IMAX if possible. I even didn't mind the 3D which I usually hate or don't care for.

Yeah I'm gonna see it in XD (which is somewhat above fake IMAX), I would love to see it in IMAX, but I don't think it's worth an hour drive.
