-A short french film called La Jette is seriously one of the BEST sci-fi films Ive ever seen. Its a photo-roman made in the 1960s and had had an obvious influence on man modern sci-fi films most notably 12 monkeys.

-The Diving bell and the butterfly was really good. It was very touching but I also like how the director used filming techniques that made you feel as if you were in a comatose state as well...really cool

- Princess Mononoke is one of the best animated films Ive ever seen. It gives a great message about man's relationship with nature and has beautiful animation

- Spirited Away is another great animated feature that I appreciated even more after rewatching it again. Very creative and lots of imagination

- Pan's Labrynith is one of my favorite fantasy films of all time.

- L'auberge Espaniole is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

By the way, from my experience I will say: TRUST.THE.CRITERION.COLLECTION
They know good foreign films :o

"At the dawn of the millennium, the nation collapsed. At fifteen percent unemployment, ten million were out of work. 800,000 students boycotted school. The adults lost confidence, and fearing the youth, eventually passed the Millennium Educational Reform Act - AKA: The BR Act..."

This is a must see for anyone that is in this forum, find it at amazon for like $10 it is amazing

I can't recomend the Best of Youth (La Meglio Gioventu) enough. It was originally shot as a 6 hour miniseries for Italian TV but was rejected for being too good for Italian TV. It about two brothers growing up in Italy from the late sixties to now. The brothers take two very different paths. It's a wonderful snapshot of Italy and such an engaging story. Beautifully shot too.

Ponyo on a Cliff
Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away
A Very Long Engagement
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Raise the Red Lantern
The Thief of Bagdad (1932)

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)

Hey Sarge, which one was your favourite?

I have to go with Red. Rarely has the act of human discussion been as riveting as in that film. I was literally on edge for the entire running time and then handsomely rewarded by a staggeringly beautiful series conclusion. Such a great, wonderful film.

I honestly loved all three, but if I had to pick a weak link I'd choose Blue.

Some good recent french flicks:

- Le convoyeur directed by Nicolas Boukrief: a top-notch gritty suspense flick (a remake is in preparation named "armored" written by Andrew Kevin Walker, scenarist of Seven). One of the best french movie of the decade imo.

- The beat that my heart skipped directed by Jacques Audiard: one of the best french director today (if not the best). It's a remake of "Fingers" with Harvey Keitel. Splendid performance from Romain Duris.

- L'Ennemi intime directed by Florent Emilio Siri: a good film about the algeria war of independance starring two fine french actors Albert Dupontel and Benoit Magimel with a great score from Alexandre Desplat.

- La chambre des officiers directed by François Dupeyron: the story of a young officer during WW1 who is disfigured by shrapnel and spend five long years in a hospital, an amazingly well-shot film with a great story. The actor Eric Caravaca really own the main character, highly recommended.

- OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies directed by Michel Hazanavicius. French comedy at his best. Beautiful cinematography, really capture the feeling of sixties cinema. Jean Dujardin is amazing as the egoistical, racist and super arrogant french spy, again highly recommended.

War Party--have you seen Bong Jooh Ho's newest film in "Tokyo?"

This man makes Wong Kar Wai look like an amateur. Absolute mouthwatering directing, cinematography, editing, use of visual symbolisms and metaphors. It's a shame Koreans will always remain underdogs and never make it in the mainstream market of American films. But it's a blessing, as well. If you know what I mean...

I have not, but I heard many great things. I will be purchasing it when it's released. But that's a bold statement you're making about Wong Kar Wai. But we'll see when I finally see Tokyo. I'm glad there's other people who love Korean cinema as much as I do.

Red was also my favorite, but the weakest for me would have to be White. I think after my initial viewing I might have said Blue as well, but after thinking about it White was the weakest among them, even though I loved it as well.

Are you pumped for Park Chan Woo's "Thirst?"

Hopefully, it'll be better than "Let the Right One In.."

Also, Bong's new film is called "Mother" and it is about a mother's journey to prove his son's innocence from the corrupt cops who claim he is a murderer.

Incredibly.
