So what are some movies you personally love, but most people don't even know exist?

Sleepdealer is a very interesting science fiction film from Mexico in which workers in Mexico are hooked up to control systems south of the boarder that are linked to robots here in the states. I wouldn't necessarily say that is great but it is quite good and is a very fresh perspective in science fiction.

Since I don't know purely 'obscure' films I am just going on the ones that I have yet to meet friends of.

The Bridge to Terabithia -- Marketing campaign was so bad that all the fans of the book won't even give this a shot because they thought it was nothing like it. Even after me telling them how misleading the trailer was.

Abre los ojos (Open your eyes) -- Remade into Vanilla Sky. Still a great Spanish film, if you don't mind subtitles.

THX 1138 -- George Lucus's best film imo.

Lakposhtha parvaz mikonand (Turtles can fly) -- I really enjoy this film evem though it is really off the wall and different from anything else I've ever seen.

Beau Geste - About three brothers who join the foreign leagion to escape suspicion when a prized family jewel goes missing. There they are harassed my a sadistic legion superior.

The thing that struck me most about the movie was it was the earliest example of out of sequence plotting I've ever seen in film. The movie begins at the end, presents a - seemingly impossible - mystery, then takes you back to the beginning and you witness precisely how the mystery plays out. It was a clever trick for a film made in 1939, and the cast, and premise, is decidedly definitive for the genre.

Two favourites immediately come to mind:

1. Tomorrow When the War Began - Recent adaption of a very popular Australian book series that I've absolutely loved since I was 15/16.

2. Another Earth - saw this last year and completely fell in love with it. So glad I stumbled across the trailer because it's one I'd never have heard of usually.

The Holy Mountain
Irreversible
Man Bites Dog
Happiness
Candy (one of Heath Ledger's finest performances)
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Ken Park
Ichi the Killer

Seconding Candy.
Somersault
Noroi: The Curse
Beau Pere
(though this was pretty popular in France so maybe it shouldn't count)
Myriad of Lights
Hibiscus Town
Not One Less (not really obscure, but not well-known here)
Rebels of the Neon God (ditto)

Not One Less (not really obscure, but not well-known here)
That is actually the first movie I've ever watched in theater. I really need to see it again.

Btw...
Children of Heaven
Duel
Mountain Patrol
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
(kind of...)

a great piece of supernatural and horror garbage, but I LOVES it...

RAWHEAD REX

Leon the Professional (i only ever see ppl on the internet talk about it)

A Serbian Film
The Munchies
The Grifter

They're all lesser talked about movies; ASF and TG are horror, while The Munchies is a Gremlins knockoff with aliens.

The Holy Mountain
Irreversible
Man Bites Dog
Happiness
Candy (one of Heath Ledger's finest performances)
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Ken Park
Ichi the Killer

Caught this on TV last summer. I agree, a very good movie.

I would like to mention the film "Bully" with Nick Stahl, Brad Renfro and Michael Pitt. A very good movie portraying the true story of a group of teenagers who decide to kill a bully. Its very graphic but very well acted.

The Man From Nowhere
I Saw the Devil
H

The Lathe of Heaven 1980 -- It's a made for TV movie but excellent sci fi.

Duel
Jack the Bear
The Majestic

The Bridge to Terabithia -- Marketing campaign was so bad that all the fans of the book won't even give this a shot because they thought it was nothing like it. Even after me telling them how misleading the trailer was.

I remember seeing this and enjoying it a few years ago and I read a review shortly after that said the movie was horrible because it was not an epic fantasy adventure similar to Narnia or something, but in my opinion it was never even trying to be anything like that.
Didn't know it was based on a book though.

Children of a Lesser God

Mr. Holland's Opus

The original trailer makes it look like the next Narnia. I'd say this marketing campaign was worse then John Carter.

Livid - A 2011 French supernatual fairytale horror movie from the director of Martyrs.

Reminded me of a Guillermo del toro movie.

Lifeforce - an 80s sci-fi movie from Poltergeist and Texas chainsaw massacredirector Toby Hooper.

Naked space vampires come to earth on a spaceship they take peoples lifeforce leaving them dead or zombies. Patrick Stweart is in.

Solomon Kane - based on Conan creator Robert E. Howard character. A badass Puritan who travels aound destroying supernatural threats.

Attack The Block - Aliens invade south London and a bunch of scrappy street kids try to defend their block.
Abre los ojos (Open your eyes) -- Remade into Vanilla Sky. Still a great Spanish film, if you don't mind subtitles.
I really liked 'Open Your Eyes' I remember watching it late one night.

Spainish cinema in general seems underrated I think.

I Saw the Devil
That movie was crazy.

Storm Shadow from the G.I Joe movie plays a CIA agent who plays a cat and mouse game with a ruthless serial killer played by the lead from Oldboy.

Well then, guess that explains it.

Day For Night (I know it's Truffaut, but nobody ever talks about it)
The Duelists
Robin and Marian
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Ride with the Devil
The Matador
In Bruges
The King of Comedy
Dragonstone
Nothing but the Truth
In a Lonely Place
The Man Who Would Be King

There are more I can't think of.
