How are they not sitcoms? The definition of sitcom is a situational comedy. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development are very much comedies, and are very much about situations.

In a very strange way, Arrested Development is very much a serialized comedy, not a situational. It has a long running, continuous story line which each week advanced and was very dependent on past episodes and drawbacks for plot points.

But I gotta give it to Curb or Seinfeld. Though Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, and Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia can all be contenders.

How I Met Your Mother also has a long running story line very dependent on past episodes and it's still considered a Sitcom. That's not what defines the genre.

Quoting wikipedia "Sitcoms usually consist of recurring characters in a common environment such as a home, workplace or group of friends."

I'm torn between Seinfeld, Frasier, Scrubs, Arrested Development and a gem that no one has mentioned....Titus.

I can't believe no one has yet mentioned The Cosby Show

And Seinfeld sucks ass, I don't know what show you guys who praise it were watching

Seriously? No love for 3rd Rock From The Sun AT ALL?! Lithgow was pure genius in that.

All in the Family

The sad thing, as great as that show was, it wouldn't make it out of the studio today. I doubt Sanford and Son would make it either.
