Green Lantern Rebirth

What makes what the spectre did stupid was he was attempting to "cast" vengence upon parallax but, in doing so free hal jordan. Jordan being freed to me was just an after affect. I mean what was stopping the spectre from casting vengence upon parallax while he was in the battery? I mean the spectre is the right hand of god. What was stopping him from entering cpb and defeating parallax in the past? Do you know how many lanterns he could have saved? Theres no reason or excuse for that. I mean if jordan can enter the battery so can the spectre.

Whats wrong with Ion?

Oh and ION... I'm trying to keep positive about my misgivings on this book seeing as i'm actually and primarily a kyle fan. I was excited for this book and the 1st book and everything. When i started reading it and looking at his power showings and his mental state I'm just not buying into the whole torch bearer bit(which basically almost a Hal reference during rebirth). I don't want to go into detail seeing as i already have in several different post about ION. His origin doesn't float with me and they make it seem more like dc giving Kyle something to do since he can' t be the primary GL anymore because of Jordan. Plus the handle on his power and his power just aren't working for me. I wanted their to be more to him than just gl and starheart power.Like i said that part just goes back to dc wanting to give rayner something to do. Maybe it will pick up maybe it won't. Its still on my list so.....

Waitaminute...the Spectre was trying to cast vengeance on Parallax. That was the whole point. He said so, very specifically: he bound himself to Hal Jordan "to cast vengeance upon [Parallax] for all of the death and fear it spread throughout God's universe."

As for why the Spectre couldn't just snuff Parallax out with a thought, well, obviously he has some limits. The Day of Vengeance series confirms this, as does the new Spectre mini. Parallax proclaimed himself more powerful than the Spectre, and so did Ganthet.

I think, DC did a very good job of making the fear demon retcon work. It fits nicely, and if you're new to the character its fine.

HOWEVER, if you're invested in the mythos, its kinda a kick in the nads, because it basically negates the whole time that Kyle was trying to restore the mantle of Green Lantern. It also sort of says 'well, murder is ok, as long as you're not the one controlling your body,'

Personally, I would have been all for a close circle of friends (maybe just John even) accepting Hal back, but its the fact that Hal himself doesn't seem to be THAT remorseful. I mean, if I found out i'd just killed most of my friends and destroyed the corps while under the control of a fear demon... well regardless of the fear demon or not, i'd be freaked the **** out. I certainly wouldn't go and try and get back in the airforce, or run around being a super hero.

I think DC did a great job with the retcon, and it still COULD have worked, but they pretty much said 'Hey, Hal Jordan... y'know all that characterisation that you had develop you over the past decade or so? Forget about it!' and then wiped him all the way back to the silver age, and now we're stuck with this wet dream of a fanboy series as written by Geoff Johns. :(

I thought the retacon itself wasn't that bad but the way they defeated parallax at the end just seemed completely out of nowhere.

Really if hal should have said "well the series is almost over so we've got to defeat the bad guy now lets get it over with"

My fault brianwilly I meant was. That made my whole post almost contradict itself. Thanks for catching that. I'm going to edit it.

I'm still not buying it though. I've seen spectre do some crazy **** in jsa i mean infallible things that only he can do. Also in his past. I've only started to see serious limitations now. I always figured he wasn't bound by power but, more by rules that are set for him to regulate him. I think he could've went in and rocked parallax anytime he wanted to.

All right people, can you guys school me in this please?

If the Spectre is the 'RIGHT HAND OF GOD' then WHY does he have limitations? He should have been able to take care of Parallax with a snap of the finger???!.

It just doesn't make sense putting limitations on the Spectre, who went face to face with the Anti-Monitor.....(albeit, he lost, which i'm still trying to understand, but still I gave him another chance) and now....he can't even snuff/exorcise/remove/kill(whatever) out the Parallax entity??? So what good is he then?

What's next he can't even hold his own against the entity? When he used to be known for going mind blowing titanic things.....now he can't even handle Parallax.....?

I got the series where Jordan was the Spectre...(total let down) I mean come on....it was just adequate...but a floating spirit of Abin Sur????!!!!
What's the deal with Jordan's spectre being a WANNA BE GREEN LANTERN costume???

pssfftt, 'right hand of god; wrath of god.....' HA! WHATEVER!!! Let's put him in the same room with G'nort and the spectre won't even have the power to withstand him too, I'd bet.

Ha! the spectre couldn't even handle the King of Tears in the JSA series....what was the 'right hand of god' doing? CROWD CONTROL.....

I swear his continued existence is a puzzle for me if he can't even carry his own weight.

He isn't the "RIGHT HAND OF GOD" at all. That's what people who have no knowledge of the Spectre say he is. Rather, he is the Spirit in Vengeance, and various beings are greater in power than him, such as Michael the Archangel, who enforces God's edicts.

Sometimes the Spectre is given limitations because he gets out of control (something he has a tendency to do every decade it seems). The Spectre's power has always one of fluctuation, and each writer gives their own spin on the Spectre. It's a highly fluid concept in that sense. I for one loved the Jordan series, but it blatantly ignored and changed some things from the Ostrander series (which I love even more), and that ignored stuff from the Moench version, who changed stuff from the Fleischer version etc. etc.

Nice observation.

And when you think of Spectre as the "Spirit in Vengeance", then having a tough time with the Incarnation of Fear is not that hard to imagine.

Request:

So who are the Powerful ones in the DC Universe? Please start with Most Powerful (i.e God-if you think so) all the way to the bottom BEFORE HUMANS (superman) to help me see the difference in power levels in decending order. Having a hard time keeping everying in order.

You're probably going to keep having a hard time keeping things in order, then. That would be a huge list.

The whole "right hand of god" bit I didn't imagine that at all. It was written and printed. So you can say spirit of vengence if you want to(which i too agree with). But, I'm not buying into the parallax bit. There was nothing stopping him in the past. But, I guess theres no point in thinking about it. Whats done is done. Hal jordan is back and is on his way back on the track of being the exact same character he was before. Hooray.

Please point out where the Spectre was ever referred to as the "right hand of God." I've certainly never come across it, that I can remember. Not to mention the fact that it's blatantly wrong anyway.

Cris Allen referred to Spectre as some kind of hand of God or something in the recent series. Obviously, he was just inferring since at that point he didn't really know anything about the situation.

Okay, I realize that my request might seem overwelming but it can't be that much.....I mean it IS just a comic universe.

Still if no one is able to answer then I guess DC was counting on everyone believing what they(the reader) read when each new issue comes out; rather then what they already know after they learn how their character is introduced.....where the writers would constantly add so many characters to its universe in order to confuse the reader on the power base/levels that the general reader universe knew from previous issues, just to mix us up.

He was referred to as such. If i remember correctly spectre had an opposing force of sorts... something with supergirl blah blah blah I wasn't really interested but, the way the spectre was portrayed was almost... whats the word i'm looking for... infallible the spectre was almost infallible. Why would I make something like that up and try to argue with dc fans? What sense would that make. Tell me.
