Green Lantern Script Review

This sounds great. It seems the WB got things in gear and are starting to make the right decisions. It's a shame to hear that Justice League is effectively dead, but hearing that this might be better than The Dark Knight makes it worth the stall on that end.

It's better off not happening.

If JL fails it puts a bullet in the head of Flash, GL, WW, JL and any other lesser film franchise who appears in that movie in one swoop. The chances of them getting solo cartoon series or tv shows could be hurt from the fallout.

It might even impact any future super-hero adaptions not tied to JL negatively, too.

Yea i to as i said before really hope wb has finally got on the ball and is ready to take other characters to the big screen this gl and the green arrow, and shazam films i think all could be ready to go by mid 09 to film for 10/11 releases. i really like to see wb finally get more characters out there. Hopefully everything works out and this and others can finally make it to the screen. I just want to see the characters taken seriously not be campy, and be as faithful as you can be to the characters, and wb market it in the right way like how tdk was or im was for marvel.

Yea i too agree at first jla film now was best bet since SR failed and pretty much killed solo supes films for the fourseeable future. If the film was taken seriously and the public liked the characters then we probably would see ww/gl/flash solo films. But like others have said if the film was a bomb and given most of the direction/and cast miller had it wasnt looking all that great and i would hate to see all these characters get screwed over for solo films.

I dont know how i'd feel about Miller directing. On one hand, he seems like a capable director who'd probably be a good fit for the movie. On the other hand, I hate him with a passion for the fact that he almost brought that terrible, terrible Justice League Mortal to life. I just dont think I can trust someone with that bad of judgement.

I think he was well-intentioned. We don't know if it was exploring the Multiverse concept or not, so until it leaks I think people should hold back a little on the hate.

Miller is a a capable director but the project is just to much of a risk to the other franchises to be executed now IMO.

I would be nervous no matter how talented the people making it were or how good the story was.

Would you consider putting Green Lantern and every other DC super-hero franchise you like entertainment products from ever seeing the light of day for decades just to see if JL could be a hit? Those franchises won't get second chances like Batman and Superman. The lucky ones might get some interest in a decade or so like Flash but the majority are screwed.

They could always make a JL movie once the primary franchises are established. It failing then means they can reboot it later and those franchises might not be as effected that badly in the fallout. That's less risk and you'll get JL any way. It'll just take longer.

What, was it supposed to take place in some wierd alternate Earth where everyone is a terrible actor?

Hm... intriguing. I love Green Lantern to death, so this is great news.

It sounds a little close to Emerald Dawn for my tastes (I would prefer something closer to Johns' presently ongoing "Secret Origin"), and frankly Legion is kind of uninteresting. However, I appreciate that they're not chickening out and raping diluting the source material. It's sounds like a faithful, respectful take on Green Lantern, which is a dream come true. I hope they can make Legion more interesting than he was in ED, or at least compensate with whatever it is they end up doing with Sinestro. I would prefer for Sinestro to be the main villain (who Johns is doing brilliant things with, by the way), but... I'll take what I can get.

Thank God they've managed to hang onto the scale of it; not keeping it entirely on Earth. A good Green Lantern film, like Iron Man, is something I never really expected to happen, so if it were to happen... well, my happiness would be immeasurable. So I hope this project doesn't get butchered between here and there.

I am too lazy to look for an "official thread", but if I find it I will merge it.

Nice news Show and as I have stated before on the Supes thread, that WB's looking into getting a more experienced director for GL is the way to go on this project. Berlanti doesn't seem to be ready as a director and he can still be the producer and one of the writers. I would accept Miller as director, but I hope WB's looks at getting Alex Proyas as the director if they can.

I thought Berlanti wrote the screenplay with the full intention of directing it himself. As a writer/director, it would suck for him if he's written such a great movie only to have it taken away for someone else to direct. But if this movie is as big as IESB makes it sound, then that's probably a good thing.

Still sucks for Berlanti.

I hear ya, and thats why I'm still a bit skeptical about hearing Miller being considered as the director. He might try and add these oddball of the mark ideas and then BAM....a potentially great GL film becomes a mediocre one with weird George Lucas style silly elements that are unecessary.

Alex Proyas all the way for this baby! :hehe:

What "oddball off the mark" ideas do you know that George Miller actually proposed for JL? Yeah, nobody was crazy about the cast, but Patrick Sauriol was the only one who really broke with any legitimate details about the script and there was nothing in his description that was "oddball off the mark".

George Miller might not have the cutting edge kewl factor due to his time spent exploring other genres and family films, but he's an award winning director, who has worked well with actors, has experience in action, and has an interest in cutting edge technologies.

Berlanti could direct second-unit...

I hope Berlanti stays on GL, seems like this is his baby. And as for those arguments along the lines of "He hasn't done anything like this before" Well, look what Lucas did with A New Hope, before that, he did American Graffiti, and who'd of thunk he could do a space epic?

Give Berlanti a chance to show us what he can do

it seems to me that anyone is hollywood can make a special effects laden movie. Brett Ratner made Jessica Simpson music videos before X3 and that looked great. The script is the thing, if that is bad then the movie is dead before it begins.

Also I veto the Clark cameo. Firstly the status of the superman franchise is uncertain and if this leads to justice league without Routh it would just look bad. Secondly, this is a Green Lantern movie lets not have a cameo that suggests Hal is second best before we even begin. (I can't imagine a cameo that basically says Hal is better than Superman either)

And, this script seems VERY good so far.

Why have good when you can have great?

this script sounds awesome and i hope they go with it. i also hope it gives the studio more faith in allowing comic book writers work on these film projects. i too am concerned about berlanti's ability to direct it. im also not comfortable with miller, particularly after seeing his plans for JLA. ridley scott would indeed be ideal. i would bow down to a Ridley Scott GL film with a script like this.

I want a GREEN LANTERN movie as much as anyone. This isn't much of a review, and I know he said it wouldn't be, but still. It sounds like they got the obvious right, and that's all well and good, but almost any comic book movie can get the obvious right. It's all in the execution. It almost sounds like wayyy too much for a two hour movie. It sounds like a very crowded script.

Well if they are saving Sinestro as a villain for a sequel, it's not that crowded.
