Hi, my name is Byrd Man. 95% of you reading this may wonder who the hell I am, while the other 5% of you may wonder what the hell I want.
Well, it's simple. I'm here to talk about stereotypes. I know that most of us here have been stereotyped as being "nerds" and "geeks". There exists in our community, a stereotype that is painful to me. Often, role players are labeled as being on geekdom's bottom rungs, wedged between the Henati fans and the guys who write Harry Potter slash fiction.
This is demeaning to me and my fellow role players, and those that write non Harry Potter slash fiction (Give it a chance, damn you!). Role players are assumed to be fat, middle-aged men and women dressed as knights wielding foam swords and yelling "2 Magic!". This is not the case.
Even now, here on the Superhero Hype Boards, is a vibrant community of internet role players.
Dubbed the "Basement" we keep to ourselves and have fun in our own way, sort of like if the Amish wore more spandex.
The RPGs on the board are more based on stories than the stats of table-top RPGs.
There are almost ten different RPGs in the Basement. in the DC section, we have an RPG based off post Infinite Crisis continuity, a player created continuity dubbed "Ultimate DC", and even a western version of the DCU dubbed "DC:1870". For Marvelites, there's a 616 RPG based off post House of M continuity, and a player created continuity dubbed "All-Star Marvel" (See what we did there? Real creative, I know )
In the Misc. RPG section, you'll find a wide variety of RPGs. From boldly going where no man has gone before in the Star Trek RPG, to fighting orcs in monsters in our fantasy "Gods and Men" RPG. We have a "One Universe" RPG, DC and Marvel characters inhabiting the same universe. There is also the "Create A Hero" RPG where if you have a superhero idea, no matter how big a rip off, you can play them.
In closing, I'd like to remind all of you to please check out all the different games we have, and how to play them.
I believe if you give it a chance, you might like these glorified Fanfics we call our past time. Me and any one of the RPG vets will be happy to assist you in any way possible, fell free to ask. Remember, if you can think it, you can do it.
I'm Byrd Man, telling you that if you think this was a cheap plug...then you were right.
