Grand Theft Auto 4 Sells ~2.5 million in the Americas on Day 1

Sixty percent of sales for day one were on Xbox 360

VG Chartz has today announced that according to their early sell-through data, Grand Theft Auto 4 has sold a record 2.5 million units in its first day of sales. GTA IV has been universally acclaimed upon release and the titles day 1 sales places the title in the upper echelon of industry hits - those that are universally loved by both critics and by casual gamers.

Data for the first day of GTAIV sales shows that the game sold roughly at a 6:4 ratio in favor of Xbox 360 to PS3 in the Americas. While that means the game sold better on Xbox 360, it had a higher attach rate on PS3 - the same story was the case in the UK according to an earlier report by Chart Track.

At $60 per unit for the standard game and $90 for the special edition and around 1/4 of all games bought being at the higher price, Rockstar is looking at around $170 million in day one Americas revenue. For comparison, Microsoft stated that Halo 3 saw $170 million in sales revenue day one so it seems at this point the combined Xbox 360 and PS3 sales for GTA IV are about on par with Halo 3.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl recently sold over 900,000 units in the Americas day one and went on to sell almost 1.6 million units week one. A similar pattern for GTAIV would push the title to over 4 million units in the Americas for week one - we expect the title to have a drop off rate more akin to Smash Brothers Brawl than Halo 3.

Sales have also been brisk in Europe, along with Chart Tracks report of 600,000 copies sold in the UK in one day, VG Chartz estimates that around 1.7 million units were sold across Europe and others on day one - the format split is roughly a mirror image of the Americas, with around 60% of all European sales being on PS3.

Day one sales for Europe and the Americas combined bring GTAIV to 4.2 million units worldwide, a staggering number, both in units and in revenue.

Stay tuned for more sales updates as the week progresses."

So thats about 2 million on PS3 and 2 million on Xbox 360 not bad eh?

Thats at the minimum aswell they expect it to rise to 3 million in US

What does it mean "attach rate?"

A higher % of people who have a PS3 brought GTA4, 1/6 PS3 owners have GTA4.

1/9 Xbox owners have GTA4

For starters we dont need this thread, there is already a thread about GTA IV with this same info posted , also VGchartz isnt very reliable, never has been(not saying these numbers are wrong tho)

Hopefully it falls into the Platinum hits quickly then.

I wonder what GTA5 will be like. (sales-wise)

Itll be even higher than GTA4 sales for 2 reasons

1. GTA4 got perfect reviews and im sure lots of people like it so thats a good sign

2. In 2-4 years time when GTA5 will come out, more people will have a Xbox 360 or PS3 allowing more people to get it.

GTA5 wont be out till the next console generation, I'm sure. I'm not even sure if they'll do expansions for IV, or if they're just going to be done via the XBL DLC they've talked about.

I've even heard rumors that the DLC could be a biggie when it comes to taking up space on the hard drive

Haha, do you honestly believe that in 4 years we'll still be playing Xbox360 and PS3? Pssh we'll be in next-next gen by then.

Yeah, I'm with you that GTA5 won't be released this console gen. However, I'm sure we'll have new editions of GTA4, just like we did for GTA3. It's not all gonna be DLC, DLC will cost $10-20 max and will only generate revenue for less than 60% of the copies out there (since not everyone will buy the DLC). I'm sure Rockstar will develop new versions like Vice City and San Andreas for this gen. If nothing else than to tweak the minor imprefections in GTA4 and improve their multiplayer experience. With sales of 2.5 million on the first day, they'd be crazy not to.

technicality. Im sure he meant the next GTA game even if it doesnt have a 5 next to it. Kind of like Vice City and San Andreas after GTA3. Im sure there will be a new GTA game before this current gen of consoles is done

From Rock Stars quotes, it sounds to me like they're going to have crazy DLC with this game. They're not even calling it DLC, they're calling them episodes, as in Half Life 2, and have said the content in them will be comparabl to San Andreas...that's each of them, on there own, with as much content as San Andreas. And seeing as MS paid them upwards of 10 million dollars for it, that evens out the entire only 60% of copies thing pretty quick. Also, I'm sure they'll cost somewhere between $20-$50, not $10-$20

Microsoft paid 50 Million dollars for the 2 Exclusive episodes.

Episodes? I heard they were cities.

Nobody really knows what they are yet.

Episodic content like what Valve has done with Half Life is the future of gaming. Whether it's a new city, or an expansion on Liberty City (more places open to visit, new characters, new missions) I'll be very happy.

Anything you've heard is a rumor.

All that has been confirmed is that MS will get 2 exclusive episodes. The first one comes out in the fall and has about 10 hours of content.

No one knows anything else.
