Guardians of the Galaxy .01

I flipped through #0.1 in the shop and was a bit dismayed to find it was more a Star-Lord comic than a Guardians comic. Granted, that could just be because it's a prequel of sorts, but if the prequel is literally all about Star-Lord, I can't help wondering whether the whole series will be more Star-Lord & Co. instead of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Bendis wrote this on his own without any intention of it being published. He just really enjoyed Star Lord's origin and decided to write it into a modern comic. Then he showed it to his editor and they decided to make it a 0.1 issue.

So this was written intended to be a Star Lord story. Hopefully the rest will not be centric.

I want Jack Flagg! I thought he played off of Peter wonderfully. They were the humans, one who hated space crap and the other who didn't give a lick about Earth. They made a nice duo.

Also, Cosmo and Mantis.

Sounds like ******** to me lol.

Eh, why lie about it? What would possibly be the gain for Bendis to say that this was how the issue came about?

I do miss Bug, Mantis, and Jack Flagg (I thought the way he met and joined the team was awesome).

:(

I miss Bug,Mantis,Cosmo,Jack Flagg,Moondragon,Vance Astro,Adam Warlock, and Phyla. Hopefully we'll see those guys pop up in this new series.

Isn't that in Hickman's Avengers? Captain Universe?

I loved the Captain Universe mini/onshots/whatever that was that had the Enigma Force jumping between all the heroes and finally bond with Gabriel. Then Gabriel showed up in the Star Lord mini leading into Annihilation Conquest and I was stoked! And then the Enigma Force left him and he got evaporized.

A tricky thing that Enigma Force.

The Enigma Force is what powers Captain Universe, but it's also the name of the team formerly known as the Micronauts.. so when I said "BRING BACK THE ENIGMA FORCE!!!!"... what I really meant to say was "BRING BACK THE MICRONAUTS!!!!.

Did you know that Captain Universe's first appearance was in Micronauts #8... a book that Marvel cannot reprint? So in the New Captain Universe Essential that's coming out in May, it basically shows all his early appearances EXCEPT for his first one...

:csad:

That's sucky town. And I forgot that the Micronauts were called the Enigma Force. That was made to happen sometime during the Son of Hulk stuff right? The Realm of Kings mini if I'm not mistaken.

I really Hiro-Kala... until they funked up his powers. He could have made a great large-scale, tragic cosmic villain.

Yeah and Micronauts is such a lucrative 3rd party lic.

No doubt marvel could reprint the book, but has to float a couple bucks to some person and they just dont want to.

Micronauts were awesome....loved Acroyear

I've been reading some interviews with McNiven and it's like he goes out of his way to piss off fans of DnA's run. Saying stuff like he didn't think there were a lot of fans of the previous stuff, that the designs that were used in DnA's run don't work these days and the double breasted British outfits don't make sense in space (someone should remind McNiven he's drawing a comic book...outlandish stuff is what they're FOR), and that he hasn't even read any Marvel Cosmic prior to working on Guardians and he just picked it up because Bendis was doing it...**** man. This guy knows nothing. No wonder we got pseudo-Mass Effect suits.

He says he was talking with some of the movie producers (this was back in September) about some of the designs for the movie and he hopes to create some cohesiveness between the comics and movie in that department...I ****ing hope Feige and Gunn stay as far away from Bendis and this guy as possible. They understand these characters and chose the '08 Guardians team based off of DnA's run for a reason.

Wow. I feel even worse about this title now.

Uuuuuugh why!? Bendis is on the movie creative consultant team isn't he?

I don't understand what Marvel's thinking/strategy is here...

Giffen and DnA did an amazing job reinventing and revitalizing the Space books and characters. SO MUCH SO that Marvel Studios took notice. They liked it so much that they put a Guardians of the Galaxy movie into development. They released concept art that looks 1. Awesome and 2. Very much like the DnA incarnations.

So what does Marvel publishing decide to do? Let's change everything! Revamp the comic book versions so they look (and possibly act) nothing like the previous incarnations or the movie in development! Bring them closer to earth! (even though Kevin Feige said in an interview that the movie takes place 95% is space and is a standalone story)

And again I'm not against change. Bendis did great changing up the Avengers and now the X-men. But this is just bizarre to me. It's change that doesn't make sense logically. Even stupid little stuff... like Star-Lord's ridiculous new blonde Bieber hair. Why!? What could possibly be the reason behind it? It's like what if all of a sudden they decided to make Steve Roger's a redhead. No explanation. Just IS now. WTF. Obviously it doesn't take away from the basic story at hand but it's jarring and just sticks in my head while reading.

Still don't know why Iron Man is on the team. Other than drawing in new readers. But that's not an organic story reason. Neither is Iron Man wants to have sex with green chicks or is having a mid-life-superhero crisis. Those are interesting character traits that make sense... but not a good enough reason to be ON the team. His presence seems forced by marketing departments.

And I hope Bendis makes me eat all those words I just typed with upcoming issues of greatness. I do acknowledge it is realllllly early on in the new series.

But for now... Argh! Get off my lawn!

That's what you get with Quesada in charge. He doesn't want anything Marvel is doing to not be connected to the Avengers somehow and have the same tone, nor does he want any of the stories to be able to go off and do their own thing. Thus put Tony on the team, call them galactic Avengers in solicits, get rid of everything that made it interesting and different from the DnA run, and assimilate it into the Avengers line of comics.

I'm not expecting any type of space opera or epicness in this honestly, just a lot of cheese to make it feel like Avengers in space. The best we'll probably get from the team is in Hickman's Infinity event where he will be able to inject real themes into the team, but on its face it will still be untrue to the original purpose of the Guardians team, which was not to protect Earth but the literal Galaxy.

Hopefully Bendis and Marvel will prove us wrong, but the more I see and read from this the more the above seems to be the case.

Thank god we have Feige and the movies. They truly understand these characters and comics and he understands the Guardians are NOT supposed to be related to Earth or the Avengers. The reason he chose the Guardians for a movie in the first place is so they could do a movie that is AWAY from the Avengers.

Quesada is no longer in charge of the books...

The worst part of that interview was "even Vader pulled the thing off on occasion" Yes, a whole two times over the course of 3 movies.
