I think I found the first GotG comic at a comic store (or whatever it was, a coffee shop or something). It has Star-lord and the others in it, and they're trying to close a fissure in the 'continuum' or something. Anyway, I might plan on getting more (there's, what, 25 of them?).

But now I just realized there are comics called Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, and Nova, and that all three of those are also part of the Guardians line...

So I'm confused. Where do I begin in terms of comics if I want to read up on the Guardians franchise? I'm particularly interested in Vance Astro, but I don't think he is a long-term member of the team.

And does the 1900's version of the Guardians have anything to do with the modern Guardians? Should I read those too?

If you want just the origin of Guardians and their stories get Annihilation Conquest, where they are formed. Then read the DnA run, don't bother with Bendis'.

But i'd recommend Annihilation anyway because it's probably the best comic book cross over event from the last 20 years.

Why does everyone miss the main recommendation thread?

It's right there......

I didn't know there was a recommendation thread so I came to what I thought would be a relevant place. I'll try to remember next time.

Also, is Annihilation concern any events in GotG(2008)? If so, I will probably want to read it... but only if I like the characters...

Haven't read the Bendis stuff, but Annihilation is one of my all time favourite comics, conquest is great too, and DandAs GotG is fantastic as well.

Ugh I've tried to read this cosmic stuff everyone praises a couple times already. I started with DnA's Guardians of the Galaxy, but was pretty confused.

Recently I tried Annihilate, starting with Annihilation: prologue. I had no freaking clue what was going on.

It may take a little while to get going, but it's well worth it. I'd recommend reading all of the character tie-ins wrt the Annihilation prologue. Also, for a bit more background, read the Thanos mini. Other than that, everything should be well established by the time you get into Annihilation, and it only spirals out of control from there (in a good way, of course).

That's sooooo much to read! And just for set up lol.

Well, you're not wrong, but you really don't have to. If you just go with the events that lead up to Guardians, you'll get a good feel for the characters as it goes along. Might need to read some issues twice, but again, it's well worth it.
