Okay I wanted to get some feedback from you lot. Every Halloween in the Hollow household we pick a horror theme and then usually go about decorating the house and garage, erecting elaborate sets and getting friends over who work in the special effects industry to help out doing some make up's etc. Once all the prep work is done we have a big party for family, neighbors and friends. This year's work is almost done, but I'm planning for next years party and was thinking of hiring some amputees and midgets to make the event visually more dynamic. The film industry uses people like this all the time when they need some one who has lost their limbs or little people. Of course I'd pay them good money to participate, but my wife thinks it's a bad idea and in poor taste. What do you guys and gals think? Exploitation or work opportunity?

Its both. As you said, people do this sort of thing in the entertainment industry all the time - your party is meant to entertain people, so I really don't see the problem. Of course how you would go about finding people that would be willing to be used in such a way is another thing.

Well if they (the amputees and little people) have no problem with it, than go for it.

There are several talent agencies that represent people with disabilities who find work for them in films, TV and at public events.

As long as you're not MAKING people into actual amputees for your party, I would think that it's perfectly fine as long as the amputees and little people are consenting adults that have embraced using what they've got (or don't have, as the case may be) to make a little extra coinage.

Yeah, that was my kind of thinking on the whole subject, but maybe it would be going a little far.:csad:

That's a little over the top. Midgets, sure, but amputees? That's mean.

It's a service. God knows the freakshows aren't doing as well as they used to.

Just hope they don't turn on you and chase you through the forest like in "Freaks".

Nah, midgets? Amputees? thats kinda sick. Just get some of those hairy people to run around and act like Werewolves, thats cooler.

lol! I was considering chopping up the people at the party for added drama!:woot:

Yeah, I guess it's all down to the people I contact, if they don't have a problem with doing this then it's all rests on whether people at the party would be offended or not. ( They may think this is humiliating for those involved )

If they agree to do it, I don't see a problem with it:)

P.S. My God your Halloween parties must be off the chain!:wow:

You do realize that, with the help of an amputee and your special effects friends, you have the perfect opportunity to pull off one hell of a "magic trick gone horribly, horribly wrong" stunt. A prosthetic limb, an ample supply of blood squibs, and a rusty saw.....oh, the possibilities!!!!

Note: If you actually do this, you have to let me come to the party just so I can see it!

Yeah, I'm going to have to look into this more.

Our parties have become annual events, but unfortunately each year we have to keep topping the previous years party. The pressure to deliver can become a bit of a headache since everyone is expecting a great party each time.:csad:

I was uncomfortable reading the idea, but I wear my heart on my sleeve. :O

it's not mean. Drakon and I joke all the time

Like the other's have already said, if the people participating are fine with it, then go for it.

Cant be bothered to read any of this thread. I'm gonna be Eddie Munster.

Exploitation or work opportunity?
Both in a way, but if all parties agree, no harm.

You should do a vampiric-disco in the years to come. I doubt anyone has ever done that.

When you throw those, do your themes reflect history periods, certain films, or just whatever idea you can come up with that the majority agree upon?

Seriously, your guest are what's important at your party; so will they feel comfortable with this or uneasy? I lean toward what your wife feels even though I see the other side.

yeah if i was to come to that party I'll be really uncomorftable and I'll probably end up hanging around outside.
