Reuters said:
Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday that its "Halo 3" video game racked up worldwide sales of $300 million in its first week, making it one of the year's best sellers and helping to more than double sales of its Xbox 360 console.

The news builds on Microsoft's previous announcement that the final chapter in its series of alien-battling shooting games did $170 million in sales in the first 24 hours after its September 25 debut.

The game is crucial to Microsoft's efforts to establish dominance in the $30 billion global video game industry that has been dominated by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) the past few years. Microsoft also competes against Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) Wii console, which has enjoyed stronger sales this year.

"Initial reports from retailers worldwide show console sales have more than doubled compared with the weekly average before the launch of 'Halo 3,"' Microsoft said in a statement.

Microsoft did not elaborate, but industry figures show that the company sold 277,000 Xbox 360 units in the United States in August and just over 11,000 units in Japan in that month.

Microsoft also said "Halo 3," which lets people play the game together or battle each other over the Internet, had spurred a "record number" of people to sign up for its paid Xbox Live online service.

The company said all three "Halo" games had sold more than 20 million copies. Earlier this year, Microsoft said the first two games had sold 14.8 million copies, which could mean "Halo 3" has sold as many as 5.2 million copies.

Shares in Microsoft rose 0.9 percent to close at $29.71 on Nasdaq. Over the past year, the stock has risen 6 percent.

Kaz Hirai was just quoted as saying...

"Despite our attempts to support our PlayStation brand in our third generation, we have to concede to the fact that we will never again be the mighty force we once were.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER!!!!!!!!!!!"

You people =/= on my "Allowed to Live" list.

But really, if it hasn't already, it will outsell the PS3 within very little time.

If anything, VG chart's estimates for PS3's total sales are more conservative than what they actually are. Sony says that over 5 million PS3s have been sold to date (that's SOLD, not SHIPPED), and Halo 3 has yet to break the 4 million mark. It took Gears of War like 2 months to sell 4 million, so Halo 3 is obviously selling remarkably well. But please do not try to stretch it further than what it actually is.

this is supposed to be news? Its not like this would be hard to beleive. A product marked at $60 is most likely gonna sell better than one marked at $499-$599. Considering there are more 360s out there than PS3s, this shouldnt be coming across as a shock

Actually, according to NPD data, to Sony, Manufactured = Sold.

movies dont even make that much in their entire run!
opening day? wow...

they deserve it....

Not a shock. Just a burn. :word:

It all depends on how big PS3's userbase is by the time the big hitters come out. Grand Turismo 3 sold several million more copies than the best selling Halo game last gen, and that was before PS2 had its legendary 100 million user base. Personally though, I doubt we'll see another game as big as Halo 3 on any system this gen.

That's assuming that the masses who are waiting for GTA4 before jumping into the current gen would rather play it on Xbox 360 than PS3. We really won't know anything until the game comes out, but keep in mind that Joe Consumer isn't going to know crap about the $50 million exclusive two episodes in the 360 version. In their eyes, both versions will be the same, so it all comes down to which system they'd rather buy for it. And there are a LOT of people who are still on the fence about the current gen systems.

If you were able to understand my message, you'd have seen that I was talking about game sales across both platforms.

Well, then the price of the system comes into play. 360 takes it...again.

Really? The huge, gigantic behemoth known as a Playstation hasnt sold in a year what it took one game on one console to sell in a week?

I know that the PS3 is more expensive, but its been out almost an entire year. It shouldnt be this close at this point in time!!!

viva la pinta could outsell the ps3.
cause the ps3 sucks

yeah but this is like saying Transformers the DVD will sell more copies than HD-DVD units have been sold...

...it's not exactly a hard accomplishment or a fair comparison. a fair comparison would be 360's units sold to PS3's units sold or Halo copies sold to MGS4 copies sold, but comparing a GAMES merits to a CONSOLE merits is like comparing pizza to an oven.

This unfair comparison would actually have been VALID if MS had released Halo 3 to counter the PS3 as originally intended. As is, who cares?

Well for what it's worth, Gears of War outsold the PS3 in a short period of time as well.
