Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

might also be the rating i know they had pre screenings for a rated r cut and a pg 13 cut

January has been known as dump month but slotting a movie of this type in there might get a lot of people who have already seen the holiday movies. If this works out some things could change.

The film wasn't that good. The test audience I was with all said we found it to be a little too over the top that it seemed so bad it was funny in many parts of it. They're undoubtably going back to fix many things with the film.

^seems it was intentional to be over the top

i love me some over the top camp not everything has to be grounded realism

Sorry, but not intentionally that over the top. They intended it to be partly comical. But sometimes - as anyone in my focus group can admit to - it was just embarrassing and shameful. Big clue - they're pushing it back by a year, never a good sign especially due to bad reception from the audience.

did the entire audience boo or did you talk to everyone at your screening?

because i know plenty of people who liked it in a pre screening

I was in the TARGET GROUP who was questioned after the movie. We all hated it and thought it needed A LOT of work. It was all universal in what we thought too. The audience was unnervingly quiet during many parts. Many walked out saying they were lucky they saw it for free. There was also that stunned silence of "what the hell did I just watch?" at the end. It needs work. It was Ghost Rider theatrical cut bad. Once again, it's been delayed a year if not shelved - it's not like these decisions are spur of the moment. And in "dump" month no less? It fell apart.

- Jeremy Renner is cool as always.
- Gemma Arterten is okay, she does what she needs to.
- Thomas Mann steals the show every scene he's in.

HOWEVER:

- Famke Janssen phones her performance in, I can't think of one scene she's in that isn't cringe-worth unfortunately. Especially unfortunate since I've liked her since X-Men.
- Her cronies are more annoying than scary. Everyone hated them. One was a punked up emo boy and the other was a crazy sugar high girl.
- There was no real tension because Muriel (the evil witch) was a joke and whenever she gained at least some tensity it was always ruined by her emo/sugar-high cronies.
- The color palette of this film is exactly Burton's Willy Wonka, it seems unnatural in a comedy action and furthers it being over the top.

Basically, the good guys? They're good at what they do. However, the evil? Is from Saturday Morning Cartoon world. This is supposed to be R??? Look for it only in a lot of blood and guts, other than that? It fits more along with live action cartoon movies making it seem even more disjointed.

As I said, there is A LOT of work that needs to get done. It's salvageable if they do it right. But it could be an utter mess if they don't. They were showing this film all the way back in October and they couldn't hand out passes fast enough to get all the feedback they could on it. That's kind of when I knew they had a hint of what they had on their hands - the date being pushed back? Just confirms what I already thought would happen.

Jeremy Renner is cool, but the rest? Eh, not really.... I actually hope it is shelved for his sake.

I hope this turns out to be a gorefest. It's even more ridiculous than I expected.

Gemma missed the screen test for Catwoman because of this movie. :lmao:

I...was expecting far worse, this at least looks fun. the medieval guns might take getting used to.

It looks kinda silly and fun, there's obviously not much to it. The acting looks kind of iffy, even from Renner.

This looks like a worse version of Van Helsing.

The "R-rated" cut apparently is very gory.

Two cuts were screened in test. Other was "R", and the other "PG-13". People seemed to like the "R" one more, but we'll see which way the studio decides to go...

I like it. Reminds me of Army of Darkness. Looks fun!
What's the title of the NIN song?

If its a hard R it will be bottom shelf good messy fun. If its a pg-13 it will be a neutered goofy mess on the level of Van Helsing.

Van Helsing was BETTER by this film than a lot. I'd say Van was 7/10. This film was 4.5/10. Without being R? I'd say neutered it's a 4/10. I'm surprised the trailer didn't trick some people from seeing through it. For me it's one of those fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me type deals... and I don't hate movies that often. I will say the trailer was edited MUCH better than the film itself. Also it's conversion 3D, I saw it in 2D if anyone was wondering - they may have added that after-the-fact.
